3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

Welcome to ION FURY!

Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.

Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.

Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.

Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
  • Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
  • Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
  • 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
  • Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
  • Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
  • Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • True tracked module music!
  • Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
  • Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!

A very fun blast from the past

Good Guns are satisfying Atmosphere (In the beginning) Movement Level Design (I only got stuck once, as in ran around aimlessly for barely 5 minutes) Lots of secrets, I only got a third of them Graphics are just beautiful Voice acting was suprisingly well done Bad Performance stutters, ESPECIALLY IN THE FINAL BOSS FIGHT JESUS CHRIST it was like a power point presentation Enemy variety, weapon variety both weak The enviroments barely changed, it felt like one very long episode (compare this game to another similar shooter Shadow Warrior. It starts off in a city, ends in a volcano, with jungles, temples, sky scrapers, boats, underground research facilities, giant gunships, submarines, and a host of other locations. All but one of Ion Fury's 27 levels are within a city, with one level having a section where you're on a cliff side briefly) Boss Fights were incredibly weak Final Boss was challenging, but only because it cripples your system. Verdict A very fun action game to get on sale, it's nostalgic to play and experience, but one can feel a bit tired by the end of the journy, as if it wears out its welcome. Also idgaf about them removing "ogay" or "fagbag" because it was only a tiny texture on some bottles that I never found.

Nice modern version of Duke Nukem

To be honest this game falls off somewhere around the middle. It just gets repetitive especially because of the enemy types being nearly identical most of the time. The shooting, the levels and the world are all cool, like a very cheesy version of Judge Dredd or Blade Runner. But the game gets boring. In my opinion. Which to be fair also happened in Duke Nukem 3D

Build't to entertain, fast and fun

Played: Stock Version 1.02 (4 years old) & 3.0.0.9 (2 months old, latest version) (5 available versions spanning 4 years at time of writting) Ion Fury is a very fun and fast paced game, the plot is simple but the run-and-gun gameplay will still put a big smile on your face. The base game offers a lot of variety in map design and easter eggs and enemies, with lots of weapons to counter them. The only negatives I can think of is the lack of wacky/unique weapons, or the late game enemies that I wish had more unique attacks, Ohh and the removal of the software render option from the pre-game settings box. I love Ion Fury and instantly jumped on the physical when it was available, the work done to the build engine was amazing to see and the gameplay really fixed an itch that I missed, well worth the money. I was absolutely ecstatic when I saw the announcement for the DLC called - Aftershock: Yet again the mad lads pushed the limits of the build engine in a DLC thats longer than some full campaigns out today. The new easter eggs and abilities and weapons and the new hoverbike are brilliant additions. the map design yet again feels so unique and avoids feeling repetative. The new enemies were fun to engage especially when they were first introduced as I wasnt expecting them at all, but man I wish the enemy variants were more lethal in the higher difficulties (with more weapon quirks to feel wildly different from the stock weapons), heck the new drone didn't drop any mines for some reason so it was literally acting like the normal drone. Hope that gets fixed but regardless of that, Aftershock was super well done and well worth the cost. Side note: On my win 11 laptop the game doesnt display the game if you play full screen at a resolution lower than the max available, choose a lower resolution in windowed mode only, Win 10 didnt give me this issue. Also this game has GOG overlay but doesnt say it does, also no GOG achievments which is odd since Steam has them. 8.8/10

Level design complexity is stunning

Overall, the game is fun. Levels are huge, secrets are cryptic and fun to find. Monster and weapons design could be better, but isn't a big issue if you run around fast and shoot things up close.

So much fun

A great, fast-paced, charming FPS that will keep you entertained from the beginning and won't let go till the end.
