3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

Welcome to ION FURY!

Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.

Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.

Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.

Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
  • Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
  • Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
  • 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
  • Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
  • Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
  • Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • True tracked module music!
  • Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
  • Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!

Inexplicable Fury

For better AND worse, Ion Fury is an old-school shooter. Its levels are very well designed, it has a diverse selection of weapons, none of which feel useless, and you heal from health pickups, not through regeneration. The gameplay itself is probably genre-perfect and the badass main heroine never fails to entertain with her snarky one-liners. Ion Fury is a prequel intended to be the starting point of the Bombshell series, and having started it in the chronological order I feel I barely learned anything - the whole plot is the short readme text from the main menu and something the villain tells during the final battle. You can vaguely divine what he is up to from the environmental storytelling, which does little to justify the length of the game. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve loved playing Ion Fury (the gameplay's too solid not to enjoy it), but I feel like it should’ve either been shorter or had more story. This game keeps track of the number of secrets you find and enemies you kill, and is absolutely impossible to onehundredpercent without a guide. It pulls ALMOST every dirty trick in the book on you - from fake walls and having to interact with or blow up objects you can’t possibly know you’re meant to to find secrets to missing enemies that won’t even show up on the radar because you have to be in a specific place for them to spawn. I guess its redeeming grace is that you are never permanently locked out of a secret within a level and can almost always backtrack even several levels back within an episode. Still, going for 100% is a chore here. The game weirdly doesn’t let you delete save files through menus. If still want to clean them up and use cloud sync you can delete them from %APPDATA%\Ion Fury\ when the configuration window where you can set the resolution is up – they won’t be downloaded back because you’ve technically already clicked “PLAY” and the initial sync already happened, and won’t be in use because the game isn’t actually running at that point.

One of the best old school shooters

Great level desing that is detailed and very good looking. All the weapons are fun to use and feel good when using. Enemies are also great and soundtrack is very well made too. I don't think I have nothing negative to say about this game. If you like "boomer" shooters, this one is very good.

Less can be much more

Highly enjoyable game. Perfect way to detox from the one or another modern title. Btw, the game also runs fine on a Rock5b ARM Soc (ok without Polymost) due the fact you can compile your own binaries.

could have been so much better

the idea of producing a modern duke nukem like game is fantastic, when this popped up i instantly bought it. after 3 hours of playing i kinda regret my decision. while it looks and shoots like the game i expected, it quickly turns out to be bland. no fun quirks, little cool moments, no creative weapons, always the same enemy types, cheap sprites, large but flat maps with repetitions built in over and over again. it makes me a bit angry because this could have been so much better. it is not a bad game. it is an ok but not great game.

Good but with issues.

The game is a blast. There's fast-paced frenetic action and great audio and level design. However, I have a few major gripes. The main is the damn skull-spider things. There's just so many that they ruin gun-fights constantly. I'll be fighting my way down hallways and large courtyards, then just get killed because these mostly silent irritations finally whittle me down. Secondly, there doesn't feel like much time was put into some of the weapons. Most of them are fun and it's great you can still use your early weapons later on, but the bowling bomb for example just isn't doesn't seem to live up to its potential and rarely seems to actually home in on targest, instead it's just rolling around uselessly until you pick it back up more often than not. I guess there's something going on with censoring, but I don't stay up on video game news much these days, but that does seem pretty spineless of the devs to bend to a couple of lily livered babies on the internet. This on top of the whole Iron Maiden malarky really shakes my trust in them to push the envelope or stand up for themselves ever gain. Good game, but sometimes you have to ignore the whines of the oversensitive, and also realize that people are tired of small swarms of stupid, little insect enemies. There's a reason not a ton of people are screaming for another Serious Sam game. Those spide-skull things really are frustrating.
