Description
Ultherst was once a peaceful, God-fearing land until the Three Scourges of God came to pass as foretold by Saint Ezekiel, one of the twelve followers of the First Prophet. First came the famine that devasted the populace. Next came the plague that added more unfortunate souls on Death’s abacus. Finally came the great rain of fire, and death fell down on sinner and innocent alike, blood flooding the streets in place of water. The people, in their desperation, turned away from the Holy Mother Church and delved deep into pagan decadence or succumbed to the temptation of the Devil. You have been charged with the office of Inquisitor. It is up to you to investigate crimes against the one true faith and root out heresy--using any and all means necessary. As in all best computer RPGs--the most important choices are yours to make.

Inquisitor is a unique blend of action-oriented combat with a deep and involving tale of betrayal, torture, madness, and infernal damnation. Put your wits to the test as you collect evidence against possible heretics and put them to trial once they have been charged. Use the might of the Inquisition to extract a confession from your subjects, but be warned, use your power wisely or you will face the consequences. If a gritty old-school open-ended isometric RPG is what you looking for, look no further. Inquisitor will provide you with hours of gameplay and a dark, involving story.
  • Three character classes--Paladin, Priest, and Thief--each with his own unique and independent story.
  • Wield the power of the Inquisition as you arrest heretics; use a variety of tools-such as the iron maiden, suspension, and the rack-to extract confessions and burn the heretics!
  • A wide, open-ended world for you to explore and exploit as you see fit.
  • More than 200 weapons, 80 spells, and 7 schools of forbidden and allowed magic!

Good game but...

This game was definitely well made and pretty hardcore compared to many RPGs I've played. Even on easy mode the combat can be pretty rough. It started out pretty nice as a new experience but as the game progressed I found the gameplay and combat to get rather repetitive and companions really sucked even though they did actually make fights easier. I personally didn't like how some of the negative status effects basically forced you to sit and wait for it to run its course since they make moving around rather difficult by affecting your mouse cursor itself. The story and script were pretty good even though some of the lines still sounded a little strange, though being translated to English I'd say it was done pretty thoroughly. Worth the play if you're in for a challenging game with a rather dark setting, not one for the casual gamer I don't think.

Great game if you embrace its mechanics

Inquisitor is a great RPG with strong mecanics. Like in Baldur's Gates the conversation trees are complex, the writing rich and each object you pick has a story behing it, especially rare items (weapons, armor, rings etc.) The game has a nice slow pace. The combat mecanics are very simple. This contributes to a "realistic feel" and immersion. I played in the hardest difficulty, and I did not found the game very hard, but I played the knight class, so maybe they are imbalances I am not aware off. The game is made to be played slowly, and to roleplay the character and the setting.

Worst combat mechanics EVER

I'll be honest, this game has some really nice graphics, sounds, ambiance and music. The story was shaping up to be rather interesting as well. Unfortunately all of that is killed by the absolutely godawful combat mechanics, most specifically the stamina system which is probably the stupidest design decision I've ever seen in a game. Everything you do in combat (except walking) drains stamina, from hitting things to casting spells, to BEING HIT. And once it's gone you're like a rock in the mud barely able to hit anything and unable to cast spells. Did I mention it drains extremely fast? In order to make up for it you'd have pump points into stamina boosting stats and chug potions out the wazoo to survive (The reviews stating you need to dedicate a huge portion of your inventory for potions or die are correct). Who thought this was a good idea? Second to this is the nearly equally stupid stat/skill system. For example in the beginning you have 0% chance to cast one of the first level noob spells found in a scroll on the floor. 5 levels later after putting points into the skill that raises casting chance I still only had a 20-something % chance to cast it. Other things like identifying and equipping certain items had the same idiotic ratios (6+ points into swords and I still can't use the crappy noob level broken sword I found on the ground because my 'skill is too low'? Give me a break) I'm sorry but this is bad game design. Admittedly I didn't get too far into the game, but from what I've read it doesn't get any easier in fact it gets even WORSE! With enemies and bosses that stunluck or perma-drain stat points and all sorts of other cheap moves. No thanks. I could've saved $15 and downloaded one of the endless imbalanced monster mods for Skyrim or something game where the maker was either a complete nub or sadist and made everything super 133t by giving them 231719 damage and health. At least it would be free punishment.

Dark dungeon-crawling fun in darkness

I should probably mention the game is dark, both visually and thematically. Getting the "Light" spell helped a bit, but still - sometimes it's hard to see until an item was highlighted by cursor. The other problem I had with this game is the randomness of NPC shops - if you close and reopen them, every single item is re-rolled (for, like, a hundred items), so instead of getting a cool find every couple of quests it becomes a decision of how long are you going to stand there, closing the conversation screen and reopening it again, in hope of rolling something better than your current outfit. So that was the bad. And the good? A lot: the theme is nicely conveyed, you get long write-ups in every item and spell description, if you are inclined to read game lore. There is character progress (albeit kind of slow/grindy) and you are going to learn many new abilities - after gaining a couple of levels, you get an edge on those bats ;). There are many quests, where sometimes you get the choice of going the easy route or digging deeper and stepping on some toes. They tend to be long, too, and have some substance - definitely not the filler "pass a message here, kill 10 bears there" kind. The inventory management is OK (got two pages side-by-side if you are a sorting freak and spend a lot of time arranging your gemstones by color etc. ;)). To sum up, if you like dark, slashy and grindy, you will get a kick from it. If you look for a game where it's easy to see where the walls and the doors are, pick something brighter and more colorful :)

An interactive novel

Many have scrutinized the games art but I feel it gives the game a certain charm that you don't see often in games nowadays. So first off I've spent about 3 hours in the game so far and let me say that if you think you'll be fighting all 3 hours then this might not be the game for you. Thus far the game has involved a lot of running around doing investigations. In other words, AN ABSURD AMOUNT OF DIALOGUE! Don't expect to do much fighting in the beginning as other than the optional 15 minute side quest in the beginning there wasn't any in the first 3 hours. That being said it isn't necessarily bad just not for everyone. The game has great visuals, it's strange to play an old-school rpg in 1920x1080, nad the sound is fantastic in my opinion. The only fault I'd really give this game is that it really gives you no direction AT ALL. However to those of whom have played other crpgs this might be standard as I come from an age of Elder Scrolls where quests guide your hand... There's none of that here. There's barely even a quest log but it just shows paragraphs of info and I don't think there is any "active quest" I'm pretty sure they're all always active. All that being said, in my 3 hours spent playing Inquisitor it was an enjoyable 3 hours and could easily see myself sink a huge amount in the game. Albeit frustrating at times but enjoyable. It was fairly cheap and so I'd definitely recommend it.
