It belongs in a museum.

The Infernal Machine is a fantastic, much overlooked game It's easy to make the comparison to Tomb Raider, but the gameplay here is more an evolution of the previous adventure games. There is very little combat was a huge focus on puzzle solving, with the occasional navigation. cWhich is a good thing, as the combat is very weak. It's also a pretty long game spanning some 18 levels. And these levels are fairly huge and complex, especially by the simplicity of todays standards. The game comes patched up, and mostly works for me barring some control issues, particularly with the steam controller and settings resetting on launch, If you're looking for a good solid adventure and don't mind some dated graphics and slower gameplay, it's a bargain.

An Awesome Adventure 20 Years On

I missed this game completely when it came out, condemning it as a tomb-raider-like. Upon playing it decades later, I have to admit my shame and man up to my mistake - this game is seriously fun and has kept my attention far more than a lot of other games of similar ilk. The fact that you are Indiana Jones helps, but I feel that the game itself stands on it's own two feet, regardless of Indy being the central character. The level design is great, and even though the game is old, the textures and various character models are realistic enough and kept in tune with the feel of the levels themselves. I have never been a fan of Tomb Raider or the like...until now. This game has been the sole catalyst in my giving platformer/exploration titles such as this a fair shot - and I'm glad I have. As a 34 year old married man with two small children, finding time for games is hard enough; for them to keep my attention is even harder. Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine has been an incredibly engaging experience, and I would give it 5 stars, the exception of one star being the clunky control layout (and I play with a PS2-like USB gamepad). Once you get used to it, it's not difficult to control, but you really have to get used to it first. The levels are long, fun to explore and find treasure, and heavily varied from level to level. I never felt like I "didn't know where to go", it was just a matter of getting there, and that was fun, too. My only complaint about level design was using the inflatable raft and trying not to hit the rocks while careening down the river. Nonetheless - this Indiana Jones adventure is fun, varied, satisfying, and engaging in every way. Heavily recommended!

Better than the later Tomb Raiders

This game is almost a perfect iteration on the earlier Tomb Raiders. It has all the exploration and action you would expect from a game of this kind. The combat is less spectacular than Tomb Raider (no flips, as one would expect from Indy), but I find it more functional. The exploration is spot on, and Indy controls much more fluidly than Lara Croft in any of the Tomb Raider games. Unlike the later Tomb Raider games (like III and Chronicles), the puzzles here all make perfect sense. I actually had a disc based version of this game, but I couldn't get it to work with my 64bit Windows. Fortunately, the GOG version runs like a dream, and has perfect support for the X360 controller.

It is a very enjoyable game

Would recommend if tank-like gameplay doesn't bother you. The atmosphere in the game is just simply great. I had this game when it was released and happy to see it sold here. The GOG actually had to do some work for the release of this game because the old installer was 16bit which isn't supported by 64 bit systems anymore. Also 1080p resolution works flawlessly. Imo it is very good bang for the buck.

Been waiting for this for years!

Very excited to see this on GOG - it was a game I loved years ago, but had great difficulty finding for sale anywhere. So 10 year old me loved this game enough to still be looking for it 17 years later. And it's held up surprisingly well. The key choice can be a little wonky, the autoaim feature is pretty poor, and you're probably going to get stuck on some random corners. However if you can put up with this its a fun pretty immersive game. The graphics are top of the line for 1999 and still worked well enough to be immersive for me (keep in mind I had a lot of nostalgia going for me here), also it meant that I could play it on my pretty old home computer. One of the biggest issues is that there are occasional bugs, where Indy will get stuck or trapped, occasionally this affects your save file. What I did for this was I keep a couple (3) save files and rotated through. On a full play through this problem only happened twice, but it would've been annoying to replay the chapter on those occasions. The level design is kinda cryptic, you'll often be wandering around for quite a while trying to work out what to do, only to find doing something completely random opens a door, or there's a whippable post above you somewhere ('Hmmmm, that thing looks whippable'). I enjoy this kind of gameplay, but if you especially don't like the feeling of being frustrated this might not be the game for you. The levels are varied and I found them beautiful (though keep in mind 1999 graphics) and a lot of fun to explore, they're very warreny and poking around in new rooms and areas is half the fun of this game for me. Compared to the other Indy games I've played (Emperor's Tomb, Fate of Atlantis) I found this one felt like a much bigger world, the other two felt more planned out and single corridory (though still very fun)
