Exploration, puzzles, and version 1.2

THE GAME - 5 stars The game has its flaws - clunky controls, stiff animations, bad collisions. However, it has wonderful level design, which gets better and better, in the tradition of the early Tomb Raider games. There are also very interesting locations and story-driven interactions that surpass the early Tomb Raider games. If you are not bothered by the flaws and like to explore intricate, interconnected levels, vast locations that have no hand-holding (unless you activate hints in the map) and solve environmental puzzles, this is the game for you. GOG VERSION - 2 STARS - The game supports modern resolutions - that's really nice. - Runs immediately on modern machines without hassle - also nice. - Unfortunately, decades ago, LucasArts did introduce a showstopper bug in version 1.2 of a re-release of the game. Because of it, in level 7, the Palawan temple, the game gets stuck on a cut-scene and it's impossible to proceed. The GoG version currently (October 2018) has exactly the same bug - completely unchanged, because it's based on the same officially released, but broken, 1.2 version. You'll still need to look for fan made patches that fix this bug online. It's not easy to find these (there are some fake ones). There was a German site that had all fixes. Good luck searching for them. GOG GUIDELINES CLARIFICATION GoG guidelines say I should not discuss technical issues in the review, but this is not a technical issue that the Support team can help with. It's a decade old showstopper bug, introduced by an official v1.2 patched CD re-release. As a result, currently (October 2018) YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO BEYOND LEVEL 7 unless you look for a fan-made patch. I won't ask for a refund because GoG put in the effort to get the game in the store, and just this effort deserves support, but unless their QA start making full playthrough tests, or look online for fanmade patches BEFORE releasing on GoG, they'll keep offering half-functioning versions like this.

GOG Version is completly playable

In the contrary to the other review on this page, i can confirm, that you can complete level 7 just fine. I downloaded the game on the same day it released on GOG and i had no issues completing level 7 (i am currently in level 15 - infernal machine). The game itself is wonderful as it was on release. My xbox controller is recognized by default, which helps a little with the clunky controlls of the game. But if you can get over this you are in for a misterious adventure through a lot of unique and fun locations. if i compare the two 3d indiana jones games on pc, the emperors tomb may have better controlls and graphics but the infernal machine hast a lot more indiana jones feeling too it and is imho the better game of the two. can recommend the game for any indiana jones or tomb raider fan.

I didn't encounter no bug at all

I loved "Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine" back in 1999, so I bought this version immediatly. It works flawlessy. I just did the level 7, the Palawan Temple, and there is no bug. I recommend this videogame to anyone love adventure games.

An infernal trip around the world

The Infernal Machine, upon release, took perhaps more flak than it deserved. After the stellar reception of Fate of Atlantis, and faced with the prospect of dwindling sales, people had hoped that the famous Indiana Jones was going to mark the company's continued support of the adventure genre. But it was just not meant to be. The game, as it turned out, is much closer to the standard Tomb Raider games of old, which of course at the time were quite popular. Unfortunately, they didn't bother to fix some of the issues that still plagued Eidos' series, and that by 1999 were starting to feel somewhat tired. Indiana moves just as slowly as Lara, if not even slower. Combat is arguably worse, because the auto-aim is far less permissive and you'll need to stand almost in front of an enemy to kill him. And the action focus ultimately means that dialogue is too sparse, although what is there is not too bad. But it certainly can't compare to the Atlantis game. Even so, should it just be dismissed as a Lara Croft knockoff? I don't think so. I may be biased, after all I'm an Indy fan, but this game does many things right. The levels are very expansive and varied, ranging from Himalayan mountains to Mayan ruins to subterranean mines under the Egyptian pyramids (??). Exploring them to find all the hidden treasures is great fun. They are arguably even better designed than many Tomb Raider levels. There are very few annoying areas that I can remember - some will say the jeep sections aren't fun, though I didn't mind them too much. And the visuals, while the Jedi Knight engine (really) may seem dated today, still manage to look colorful and vibrant. The story may not be much, but it works decently enough, and is a fair deal better than whatever we got in Emperor's Tomb. Overall, Infernal Machine is better than its reputation would imply. It's no masterpiece. But what it does, it does quite well. And being almost 20 years old, this is one relic Indiana Jones might deign to chase.

Good ol' Indy

At first, I don't really want to compare this first 3D Indiana Jones adventure to those previous 2D point/click Indy games in terms of "adventure" and "puzzles". It is a different style and a different experience with different principles. While it is much more action-based game, it still keeps the mystery and wit of the classic adventures, and this is actually very important, since a good Indy game is a game wanting players to think. And you will be thinking in the game. A lot. The shooting mechanics could be better but everything else is genre purity!
