A pearl

Let's say it as it is: The controls are terrible, the graphics were already outdated when the game was originally released, the load/save game menu is a Windows File dialog. Still here? Well, then now you got the opportunity to enjoy a great 3rd person action adventure. The game uses a slightly modified version of the engine used in Mysteries of the Sith does. So I really doin't understand why they had to put the savegames menu in a Windows file dialog, since MotS had a ingame menu for savegames. Also - for the artifacts found throughoout the game - you can buy ingame items between the levels. Again ... this was implemented with a standard Windows form. WTF?? Things like these give me the impression that the game was rushed. Some more polishing would have been nice. Despite the tecnical issues the game has, it's a very good game. Some of the riddles have a certain adventure feeling, they might as well belong to a point&click game. The story is better than what we have seen in the latest movie (ok, that's not really something special, but still ...), the characters are well designed. Indy's voice over was done by the same person who did Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, who did a great job in both games. German players get to hear the same speaker who also synchronizes Harrisond Ford in the movies. Back in the days, this was compared to Tomb Raider which in the end won the battle. Sure, the goal WAS to benefit from the Tomb Raider boom, but this game plays very differently. If you expect Tomb Raider involving Indy, don't buy it. But if you are looking for a good Indiana Jones story with a bit of action and don't mind the antique looking graphics, this is for you.

Back to memory lane.

I was so excited to see finally this game at GOG. I do own the original cd's but as I now use a Mac I was happy to see you guys releasing it here. So I can tell this game can be played on the Mac using the PlayOnMac software. Of course it's not the prettiest game but I really love it.

Thank you GOG for the long awaited

Since I discovered GoG, I've been hoping in pure faith for this. On my previous machine I was able to run an emulator in which I could (clunkily) play this title, but alas in these days, GoG has become my only hope to relive many of these classics. With X-Wing Alliance a couple years ago I was rewarded largely in that faith, and now, after another tantalizing wait, they've delivered again. Just like it played in 97' just without the 20 minute loading screens. Thanks GoG, we love and support ya. Time to play the fourth Indiana Jones movie that should have been!

This game treats Indy like a person

With such a great character and background, it's strange that there are so few Indiana Jones 3D adventure games (I'm not talking point-and-click). Infernal Machine, Emperor's Tomb, and one on Wii that I can't remember. While technically inferior to the others, Infernal Machine is the only one that (a) makes you think (with lots of clever physical puzzles) and (b) treats Indiana Jones' character as something more than a running-jumping guy with a few wisecracks. I think this is what's missing in the later games, and what caused people to lose interest in them. You find Indy in an actual archaeological dig, looking for pottery (guess what, that's what archaeologists normally do!), or negotiating with a street urchin for information - little details that make the story much more interesting. One interesting detail, for example: when attacked by beasts - wolves, pumas and the like - he doesn't shoot them -- he shoots up to scare them! (Compare this to its time Lara Croft, who would get pandas extinct if they stood on the way of some stupid gem!) In terms of gameplay, it'll probably feel a bit old - none of the smoothness of Emperor's Tomb, or its intuitive fighting system - but it's a game that asks you to go slowly and figure things out - plenty of deadly traps if you try going too fast, believe me! It's the kind of game I play when I'm in the mood for a tough nut to crack, rather than exhilarating graphics.

Best Indiana Jones feel from the films

Released in 1999, this game instantly became one of my favourites. Back then it captured my imagination by its atmosphere, plot and general gameplay. The very first minutes show, this is the real Indiana Jones adventure. The story, which takes place after WWII, is somehow unusual, this time you have to deal with a very different enemy - lot of Russians. Even though their image looks all too stereotypical, the story is a real challenge and very funny. The plot takes you through different locations, including Iraq, Kazahstan, South-Eastern Asia, Mexico and Sudan, with each of levels made with much attention to details (both in terms of historical decorations and puzzles). Aside from Russians you encounter various wild beasts and less familiar creatures from beyond. If you played other games about the famous archeologist, then be ready to meet an old friend. Several minor characters are also quite memorable, and were voiced by veteran actors, not unfamiliar to players, like Carolyn Seymour (Jedi Outcast, KOTOR, etc). The game specifics remind a lot of similar games of that time, like Tomb Raider. But if you're a fan of Indiana Jones, this is a must try. We're so lucky to have been given the opportunity to play this masterpiece again, now in 2010s.
