Serviceable action/adventure

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is one of those classic games people look upon fondly because of nostalgia and little else. Back in the day, it was Indy's attempt at "taking back what was rightfully his" from Tomb Raider's Lara Croft, and it kind of did. In some ways, this game is less clunky than the classic CORE Design Tomb Raider titles, especially when it comes to the movement fluidity (still featuring the dreaded tank controls of the genre, but somehow more responsive), it added some cool mechanics using Indy's trademark whip that made sense for an Indiana Jones games -- and that later Tomb Raider titles would end up emulating, too. But it's still "just a Tomb Raider clone", no matter how you put it, despite the fact Tomb Raider "copied Indiana Jones to begin with" (it obviously drew inspiration from the movies, but there's only so much you can "copy-paste" when you were going from movie to game in the mid-90s. Indy and the Infernal Machine has decent graphics, for its time, it certainly won't hurt anyone's eyes, that's for sure -- there were way uglier games made during this time, and no one's expecting Witcher 3 quality graphics, anyway. It's hard to recommend to anyone who isn't an oldschool action-adventure fan. It's a very hard, very cryptic game; the level design isn't nearly as interesting or clever as the brilliant ones in any classic Tomb Raider game, so you'll end up getting lost and confused more often than you'd like. Not to mention the appalling combat. That first snake you find? Yeah, it'll likely kill you very fast, because Infernal Machine features no auto-aim (like the classic Tom Raider games do) and no easy way to aim weapons on your own, so you just slowly and painfully position yourself in a way that your bullets or your whip (hopefully) hit the enemy. This is not a minor grip, as there's a decent amount of combat in this game. Hard to recommend, but a good title if you're interested in the evolution of action-adventures.

this game finally works on my WIN 10!!!

oh yes this classic "Indiana jones and infernal machine" was a nightmare to run on post Windows 98/2000 (if you're running it on CD-ROM), from black screens to crashes. i tired few times to run it on my old win xp with no luck and I thought for many years it will be impossible to play this game on even more modern pc's. due to this I eventually played the "Nintendo 64" version later on, a pretty solid port that fixes almost all the problems with the PC version (except the muddy graphics, some of the audio and frame rate drops). but after so many years the impossible happened, it's playable on windows 10 to my shocking surprise, i don't know how GOG did it, but it works! this underrated Indiana jones title is the first 3D action game starring Indy and later got 2 sequels: "Emperor's Tomb" (pretty good game) and "Staff of Kings" (a buggy broken mess of a game). 'Infernal Machine' is clearly a 'Tomb Raider' clone, but not a terrible one. yes the game has the same problems tomb raider has, awkward tank controls, very annoying camera and sometimes you don't know where you suppose to go and the voice actor for Indiana jones does a pretty poor harrison ford impersonation, even the menu is very weird to navigate. but on the positives: the level design is pretty unique, graphics are surprisingly not bad for 1999, yes they're blocky and the textures are a bit muddy by today standards, but there's clearly effort went into this game. the plot is pretty good for indiana jones and it's great to explore, find treasures, solve some clever puzzles and deal with the soviets. a very fun game and highly recommended it for hardcore Indiana jones fans and old-school gamers, if the PC version still gives you a hard time try the nintendo 64 version.

All time favorite adventure game

I adore this game. I remember playing it as a kid and getting stuck in Shambala and never finishing it. The biggest problem then was the controls, which are still a sticking point today. However, you can make a pretty comforable bind for ps/xbox controllers now and it plays great. (I recommend playing with run defaulted off, else you'll fly off legdes way to often). The thing this game nails that almost no recent adventure game does is balance puzzles and combat. Tomb Raider has turned into a survival sluaghter fest with very occasional puzzles. Uncharted is likewise 80%+ shooting or platforming. If you like Indiana Jones, want a game with less action and more exploration (without excessive platforming) and oodles of environmental puzzles, then this game is perfect for you. Just time the time to get comfortable with the controls and it'll be well worth it.

So much like the first Tomb Raiders...

... but very various in the scenarios and textures, and the story was well conceived. A must buy for the fans of Indy and old TRs' game mechanics!
