Description
Hotline Miami is a high-octane action game overflowing with raw brutality, hard-boiled gunplay and skull crushing close combat. Set in an alternative 1989 Miami, you will assume the role of a mysterious antihero on a murderous rampage against the shady underworld at the behest of voices on your answering machine. Soon you'll find yourself struggling to get a grip of what is going on and why you are prone to these acts of violence.

Rely on your wits to choreograph your way through seemingly impossible situations as you constantly find yourself outnumbered by vicious enemies. The action is unrelenting and every shot is deadly so each move must be quick and decisive if you hope to survive and unveil the sinister forces driving the bloodshed. Hotline Miami’s unmistakable visual style, a driving soundtrack, and a surreal chain of events will have you question your own thirst for blood while pushing you to the limits with a brutally unforgiving challenge. Some tactical thinking required, if you don't want to die--often.
  • A surreal and gritty storyline panned out over 20 ultra-violent multi-level maps.
  • Breakneck gunplay in bloodstained neon corridors combined with an intense, pumping soundtrack.
  • Gut-wrenching battles against a bizarre cast of bosses from Miami’s underground.
  • Wield 35 different weapons - from shotguns and assault rifles to katanas and lead pipes - everything is at your disposal.

A nice little challenge...

But, unfortunately, not much more than that. A forgettable game that's over quickly doesn't leave much of an impression with its gameplay, even with its smooth gameplay. Wasted potential, if you ask me. No real story to speak of, which would be find if the developer hasn't chosen to cram a needless pseudo-story in. Wasted potential, if you ask me. Wouldn't buy again.

Captures the feel of a final act mob movie shootout perfectly.

You know the scene--the protagonist with nothing to lose lays siege to the hideout of a syndicate, facing 'impossible' odds. Relying on his incredible animal cunning and the element of surprise, he can only hope to scrape through every confrontation by the skin of his teeth, brutally executing everyone in his path with whatever's available. Still, miraculously, he succeeds, and we believe it. Why? The enemy's hubris was their downfall. "No one would REALLY be insane and/or suicidal enough to attack this place, would they? The guard detail can take it easy..." The aesthetics of this game are phenomenal. In addition to the indescribable soundtrack, the game uses the time and energy saved on its low-key, retro graphics to flaunt 80s-90s demoscene style pixel effects and modern shaders that really show what cycles can bring to 2D art design. The sound design is also excellent. Nothing sounds canned. The crunching blows of melee weapons and the staccato bangs of firearms all sound satisfyingly real. HOTLINE is also what I like to call a "programmer's game" and is a breath of fresh air in the modern era. The mechanics are lovingly detailed, steel-trap tight, and feel ripped from a time when games were small and the programmer was also the designer and expressed his/her vision through the code. There are all kinds of nifty, appropriate rule effect variations that happen, depending on which weapon you're using. This really boosts immersion through the roof. As for the mechanics, they're nearly faultless, in my mind. Every action has a purpose. Items have value. There is no excess. You will value weapons. You will use every maneuver available to you. You will have limited resources and need to deploy them accordingly. If I have one criticism, it's the AI. A tip says it behaves "consistently," but this isn't the case--it's really pretty spotty, and it's difficult to tell exactly what will happen in certain circumstances. I didn't mind much, as I wasn't going for high scores, but I can see someone becoming frustrated when a nearby mobster doesn't react to a gunshot, or, alternatively, one attacks with lightning speed after catching a glimpse of you. The odds are stacked sky-high. Simple mistakes mean death. But you're facing goons; they're dumb as rocks and don't think, don't pay attention. You're a pro. There are no rules here. You can create your own little game and destroy everyone who doublecrossed you.

Game ruined by its controls

Kinda interesting game completely ruined by its shoddy character controls. The combo mouse and keyboard do not work here well with gunfight and is very weak with melee weapons. Some people advertise it as a logic game. It is really not. It is too random, random weapon types on the floor and enemies, random enemies behaviour.

Could be perfect but falters at the end.

So much swimming to die at the shore. I suggest you watch a couple of Youtube videos on its gameplay. Stealth is not needed, the only "stealth" element you might employ is killing your victims with melee weapons so you don't make sounds. Even when behind enemies, they can detect you no matter the distance as if they were looking at you, sometimes you can pass in front of them really fast and you don't call their attention. If you have the reflexes and patience the game is really fun and rewarding, it even keeps track of your score in the stages, the faster and more combos you can pull off the better is your rating. The game has masks which you put on and every one of them has different effects. There are more than 20 masks with different effects. If you have good reflexes and you don't mind repeating floors until you get it right or just repeating them with different masks for different approaches, you might like this game, its near perfect but where it falters is in around Chapter 12. Chapter 12 is a dead stop, I don't know why they chose to completely slow down the game and introduce a problem that only matters here. Maybe by reading this it will help you get ready for it and you don't suffer the disappointing frustrations I went through trying to understand whats going on and enjoy the game better than I did. In Chapter 12 there is a very small element introduced you won't notice it because you are so used to enemies having eyes on their back, it will mater here. Where enemies look and their animations will matter here. Its frustrating, I thought they were detecting me randomly over and over and over but that wasn't the case, I was playing with friends watching me and they gave me the idea that maybe their animations matter now for this level. The same goes for Chapter 15, if Chapter 12 didn't frustrate you this one will take you to the limit. Save your self some time and choose the "Walk faster" mask the first time, practice and practice.
