Hotline Miami is a high-octane action game overflowing with raw brutality, hard-boiled gunplay and skull crushing close combat. Set in an alternative 1989 Miami, you will assume the role of a mysterious antihero on a murderous rampage against the shady underworld at the behest of voices on your answering machine. Soon you'll find yourself struggling to get a grip of what is going on and why you are prone to these acts of violence.
Rely on your wits to choreograph your way through seemingly impossible situations as you constantly find yourself outnumbered by vicious enemies. The action is unrelenting and every shot is deadly so each move must be quick and decisive if you hope to survive and unveil the sinister forces driving the bloodshed. Hotline Miami’s unmistakable visual style, a driving soundtrack, and a surreal chain of events will have you question your own thirst for blood while pushing you to the limits with a brutally unforgiving challenge. Some tactical thinking required, if you don't want to die--often.
A surreal and gritty storyline panned out over 20 ultra-violent multi-level maps.
Breakneck gunplay in bloodstained neon corridors combined with an intense, pumping soundtrack.
Gut-wrenching battles against a bizarre cast of bosses from Miami’s underground.
Wield 35 different weapons - from shotguns and assault rifles to katanas and lead pipes - everything is at your disposal.

Perfect presentation, amazing soundtrack and compelling gameplay make it *the* game to have. Yes, it's violent, yes it's pixellated but if you can get past the retro stylings, it's a game that you have to play. That is all - get the game.
My "reference point" in top-down shooters were mostly old Gauntled derivatives such as Alien Breed, The Chaos Engine.
This game is more like Smash TV, as it is even more action focused. It is a sequence of short but very difficult levels with some narration between levels, to allow for a healthy break.
Gameplay-wise, it is a die and retry shooting game with an *incredible* pace and pityless difficulty (one shot and you are dead, bam !)
It is as intense as the most nervous/intense FPS game such as Quake III : things happen so fast in this game that every second of it is enjoyable.
The gameplay not only plays great but feels/looks great thanks to realistic sound effects, gore visuals, and punchy music.
The weak point of the game is the technical side.
It has been made with Game Maker and do have some technical issues/bugs. Hopefully this did not hinder my experience at all :)
It will get you hooked from the beggining, make you high from all the action and the withdrawl will be awful... until you play it more. Highly recommend it, short, tight and satisfying experience. For me - an example of a perfect game. From the machanics through the visuals, the story and the music - everything is perfect. And soundtrack is always on my playlist, I also play a level from time to time, it's just so so good.
Fun game if you can get to play it for a substantial amount of time,
however in its current form i CANNOT recommend buying.
the game suffers from a rather consistant crashing everytime something happens in game if its saving, loading a new enemy or something changes.
tried everything i can to make it run but got nothing to show for it.
until the crashing is fixed id avoid this one.
R to restart. You see this phrase a lot. But you don't mind. You push R und try again. You die again. R to restart. Rethink your strategy and try again. And again. And again. Until you made it.
I never thought I'd have so much fun dying a lot. This game can be very hard but not unfair. It challenge you to rethink your strategies and start again. And again and again. But the feeling when you finally made it to the end of the level is just a great motivator. And on top of that the game has a truely great soundtrack.
This game is hard, unforgiving, challenging, brutal, mixed with awesome music.
Graphics are simple but fitting, controls are very tight and responsive. The only criticism I have is the wobbly and colorchanging background.
