The good parts:
- Space
- Nice ship models and fights
- Good story
- Skirmish mode is playable and fun
The fatal flaws:
- Slow, very slow gameplay. The strategy involves moving in 3 dimensions is useless or won't do any difference against CPU. You need to save before every maneuver.
- The campaign's difficulty scales different, can't be set. There are stages which is way too easy and others are impossible. I can't beat the last mission because I have too large fleet. The enemy grinds me in a minute.
- During cutscenes, the game doesn't stop, but you don't have control. This means say good bye to your progress if you are in a fight and a cutscene comes. You need to skip as fast as possible every ingame cutscene.
Overall it would be an epic game if there is a patch for the flaws. For the newcomers to this game, don't listen to those this is master piece. You can't look up videos, guides to help you with tactics, because it is different for everyone. If you build a large fleet, the next mission maybe impossible. You need to do all over again the previous mission with limited fleet to have chance in the next one. This is outrageous.
I have my own past with Warcraft, Starcraft and C&C games and other not well known RTSs, but this is uniquely bad. Not even Player's Patch 2.3 helps it...
Never played a homeworld game until now. Excellent, Excellent Excellent. Best Artwork and Storyline for a game that I've played in a long time (not often nowadays I want to play a game's single player campaign just to find out what happens in the story)
The first levels where the three-dimensionless of the battles gets introduced are like 'huh this is amazing, I bet this game is gonna get pretty tactical." But how far could that really go? Especially for an older game?
And then you take on the first fleet and you realize that it's true what they say - they just don't make them RTS games like they used'ta. Absolute mayhem. And challenging gameplay. Basically, it's Ender's Game.
Never played the original release and I'm not much of an RTS fan, but I like this one.
This game uses a clean and classic mission & story telling format that simply works.
As a player who doesn't play RTS games that much, I've played Homeworld: Remasterd for about 10 hours now and its interesting, entertaining, immersive.
Story & Intro Scenes are well done with top notch voice acting.
Music is excellent and favors celestial moods, themes of destiny and discovery.
Graphics Performance: It runs perfectly on my budget pc. (GTX 750 1gig vram)
Visual Effects: Excellent. Tasteful and not overly flashy.
Controls: Feel very classic and understandable. The tutorial & early missions were very helpful due to the small steps of increased difficulty, which is great to me because I rarely play any sort of RTS game.
Difficulty: I'm only half through the game and the difficulty has increased at a fair pace.
Flow & Pace: Its interesting & immersive. The missions and tasks are not overwhelming. The missions are not using quirky mechanics. There are a mysterious moments and plot developments but they advance the story and game difficulty with an immersive pace.
Overall: 5 Stars. Purchased this on sale and its totally worth it.
If you're getting this game, PLEASE get the players patch. It fixes most of the errors and bugs that come with this game and makes stuff like formations actually a thing. This is mainly for homeworld one players but the point still stands. That aside, this game fucking rules.
Technically, the remastered edition is pretty good. Graphs are nice, musics are great.
Now the games. Homeworld 1 is really good. You can enjoy the game. it's hard but it's okay, sometimes you have to try again but you'll finish to win.
Homeworld 2, well, it's not the same. It's a lot discouraging. Each mission from the third is hard, very very hard. Sometimes you have to reload like 10 times a save, or retry 10 times the mission from its beginning to succeed. It's even sometime so ridiculous (like mission 4, one of the worst, waves and waves and waves of ennemies, without a single chance to win it if you don't have the PERFECT start). Well, i tried to advance, but i raged quit and desinstall at mission 6. There's no fun in trying more than 10 times each mission, that's just a mess.
