One of the greatest Video Game Stories

Before the Sci-Fi epics of Battle Star Galactica, Mass Effect and Halo there was a strategy game by Relic that infused a gripping narrative and setting with some of smoothest RTS gameplay you can get. The story at first is a very confrontational one; you are a race of exiles forced to return home after your entire civilization was mercilessly obliterated when you entered hyper-space for the first time. There is no way out. if you fail at your task, everyone dies and all the sacrifices made in vain. Obviously Homeworld is not an easy game, its you versus a galactic empire that's taken residence on your planet and they aren't willing to negotiate. Homeworld's combat is similar to other 4X strategy games, mostly because Relic pioneer it. However, victory in Homeworld isn't achieved through destroying your opponents but by capturing them. Even if you're extremely miserly with resources, you'll never be able to field or afford enough Ion Array Frigates, Destroyers and Capital ships to stand a chance against the Taidanii homeguard. So get ready to save, load and defend your salvage corvettes as they capture a whole fleet worth of enemy ships. An interesting dynamic emerges where you work to defeat the enemy without them loosing salvageable ships, since having a couple Heavy Cruisers makes some later missions MUCH more manageable. My only complaint with this remastering is the lack of Cataclysm, easily one of the best expansion packs made. Imagine Dead Space and Star Trek.

Flawed, but worth it.

For most Homeworld fans I daresay it was the prospect of remastering the original 1999 game that was the most exciting part of this project - not only on the basis of the HW:HW2 vote ratio on the community wishlist, but also because HW2 is still perfectly playable and the graphics reasonable whereas HW really shows its age. Sadly, the HW remaster - even on patch 2.0 - just feels fundamentally broken underneath and I am not sure it will ever be truly fixed whilst running on the heavily modified HW2 engine. The improved Homeworld 2 interface is welcome - as is the inclusion of a cut level from the game - but the formations, stances, and ship movement (that could turn battles when properly managed) still don't function properly and I am not sure they ever will. Overall ship balancing is also different, particularly with capital ship health pools being lower in a style closer to Homeworld 2. It is a pity since the ships and effects look so good, but ultimately gameplay trumps graphics. As for HW2 I cannot comment in too much detail as I never liked the way the game was balanced or the single player campaign, so I lack the experience to discern any significant changes to gameplay. Presumably though it has minor balancing tweaks coupled to a substantial graphical upgrade. Research trees in skirmishes did seem simpler and much faster than I recall for both versions, though. When all is said and done though you should still buy this as it also comes with both of the the original games - and that CD just won't last forever.

broken gameplay

Be careful. this game is a lie. Why??? You should know that all mechanics from the original game are not working. The graphics are ok but it is very easy to play now. Formations do not work as they should. If you loved to catch enemy ships with your corvettes, forget it now. You can only build 14 ships of those, and you have to catch every enemy ship single. It does not work like in the original games. If you are not an old fan who played homeworld when its first realese you maybe can have fun with this version. But for old guys like me this game is a broken game. It was told before release of the remastered version that they will make it like the original. I`m really sad about that this was not the truth!

The only real 3D space strategy game

Being a big fan of the original HW1 I was very exited when this was announced, and I admit that graphically the remake is great! However if you expected a remastering of HW1 and HW2 you were disappointed. It was a remake of the HW2 engine and they tried to cram the HW1 game into this. But after a year and a half they finally patched it all and they fixed almost everything the community was complaining about. There are still subtle differences but they are no longer game breakers for most veterans. And you can experience the real/original game play of HW1 and HW2 with the classic versions that are included. This is really a must play if you like RTS games. The fans of yore can replay the classics on modern OS now (if they are still bothered with some of the changes), and the new players get to experience what is probably the greatest space opera RTS game ever made. This is remake of classic game of 1999, so do not expect to be handheld like modern games tend to do. It will take a while before you get the hang of it and you will need to spend a fair amount of time in discovering the different tactics you will need to apply to make progress in this game. But, oh boy, is it worth it...

An Amazing Series worth every single penny paid

I'll be honest. I own the game over on Steam. I really do wish GOG could get the newer releases like this as soon as they're available. This was a Day 1 purchase, easily, for me. Now, saying all of that, Homeworld 1 & 2 are, simply, masterpieces of space strategy. Without making a difficult to control game the original devs created a simple point-n-click strategy game that went beyond anything that had ever been created before. The depth to the game is almost un-ending as is the difficulty if you so chose. With wonderfully created and fiery allies and enemies the amount of horsepower in your fleet is only controlled by your imagination and, well, money. The Remastered version is an upgraded HD version of both games. Homeworld 1 is remastered in Homeworld 2's engine with some bumps in geometry and detail and, obviously, screen sizes. Homeworld 2 is a "repainted" version of the engine with better detail, geometry, pathfinding and screen sizes. While, not fully "1080P" versions, it's hard to tell with the work that's been done on the games. They both look exceedingly well done and the work that's been put into the "redux" versions is really, really nice. It's worth, most definitely, playing through every single version available. I started with the original 1 & 2 and then went to the upgraded versions for my playthrough. It's well worth it to notice the subtle and glaring differences made to the respective engines. I had an absolute blast playing through these again as I had lost my original discs to the games some years ago. I'm really glad they finally made an appearance on GOG for those that want true DRM free games. On a side note, there are a TON, and I mean a TON, of available mods available for the originals as well as redone mods for the upgraded versions. Many of them are worthy of your attention. Of course, once you've finished the main campaigns. There may be some tricks involved, but they work.
