Too difficult to be enjoyable

I'm writing this 9 hours into the game. I've beaten HK but with Silksong I think I am just going to give up. I am not good at putting my thoughts into words, so I'll just quote from a negative review on Steam: > Silksong is all tension all the time. Sometimes tension go up. But it never comes back down. And that can be exhausting instead of fun. Exactly this. No health upgrades, no damage upgrades, more and more enemies as you traverse the map, to the point where making progress to the next save point feels impossible. I want the game to be challenging, but I also want it to be fun. It isn't.

Good, but doesn't respect your time

The art direction and music are of course top notch. The game controls great, with one big caveat: getting the double jump messes up your muscle memory because pressing jump twice suddenly does something different than it did the last 20 hours. By the time I got to Mount Fay I was definitely continuing out of spite rather than because I was actually enjoying myself. The combination of tricky platforming with time limits and respwning several screens back if you fail I think is the clearest example of this game not respecting your time and turning from challenging to actively punishing. It's a shame that what started with exploring such a wonderfully crafted world ended with me deciding to beat the final boss because I just couldn't be bothered to play this anymore.

Needlessly infuriating and "difficult"

It's a good metroidvania game, but most of the difficulty comes from horrible and uncustomizable controls that make everything needlessly hard and mildly infuriating, This game needs proper controls customization, including replacement of combo attack shortcuts like Down+Attack=Dive, Up+Silk=Tool etc. There is absolutely no need to mix up movement and skill activations.... I feel like playing a Mortal Kombat finger breaker game. Difficulty adjustments would be nice too. Rosaries are lost on death, this is pointless because they can be farmed again anyway, which only leads to boring farming gameplay. There is no "return to save point" button, yet you can force it by saving and reloading anyway. Dialogue is not enjoyable to read, writing style is needlessly complex and tiring for a platformer game. No voice acting doesn't help. The most basic functions of the map (like the map itself, markers for shops, save points etc) need all be acquired ingame separately, and showing position of the character on the minimap requires equiping an item that takes up slot that could be used for something else. I'm just several hours intp the game but the amount of weird design decisions is astonishing. Overall it's a decent game, and certainly good value, but it's far far far from a masterpiece.

A masterpiece that I cannot recommend.

The followup to the seminal Hollow Knight is here, and like the original, it is a meticulously crafted game. The game is larger, systems more complex and features out the wazoo. The art and music is also just as gorgeous to the eyes and ears. The problem however is they way the game is designed. In many ways it is downright spiteful towards the player with a lot of elements that seems to just be there to be obnoxious. Mean traps and lots of gotcha moments that seems to be only there to troll the player. More than anything, the game seems to be designed to be punishing first, be an engaging challenge second. Something that is exacerbated by how much the game asks of you with no reward save for progression. All stick, no carrot. It is a shame as the game is meticulously designed and well optimized, yet it feels like it hates you to no end. It just seems like there is a central flaw in the games very core design and parts feel downright at odds with itself. This is a game where I hate the fact that I hate it and I just can't recommend it, especially not when compared to its more well balanced and fun predecessor.
