Overall, the premise seems interesting. Huge, complicated world, races, classes, whatever you need for a solid RPG...
... but then I started to play. First combat took roughly 5 minutes. Second, around 10 minutes. Suddenly I realized why there was a mention of "600 hours of gameplay" somewhere. It's so slow, it's basically just unplayable.
And combat messages were completely useless, no information about damage done, but only what body part was hit? Ehrm.... what? From all important things that can happen in combat, author chose that and nothing else?
Maybe if combat is fixed, I'll give it another go, but for now, it's a big no.
This game is not for everyone. You need to love first person rpgs.
I am too young to have existed when these sort of games were at their peak, so no nostalgia here. I find this game to be fun.
Yes it doesnt help you at all, yes you will run around farming random encounters to level up.
Yes if you know the secrets and mechanics you can skip the farming.
This game allows you to smash your head against it until it lets you pass to the next area. But you can also just learn tricks and secrets to progress faster. There are plenty of secret areas with puzzles and items that will give you a boost. The game is flexible.
This game is hard. Until you learn where the secret doors and items are, you will get crushed (unless you farm levels). Dont go in expecting the game to play itself.
The game has beautiful art and customizable UI, the creatures and effects looks great for this kind of game. I think 1 guy made this. Very impressive to make this many high quality sprites.
In short, if you want a hard first person dungeon rpg that rewards exploration and finding secrets as well as knoledge about its mechanics and enemies, this game is the best. I played Might and Magic series from 5 to X. And I still like this game more.
I don't use the word masterpiece often, but it absolutely applies in the case of Grimoire. This is the natural progression from Wizardry 7, and it captures everything that made that game great. The world is huge and full of mystery. The sense of adventure and discovery are unparalleled. The game looks and sounds amazing. The dungeons are fun and always worth exploring. There are very few RPGs that last as long as Grimoire does, and even fewer that manage it without wasting the player's time on nonsense. Even knowing the time investment involved, writing this review makes me want to replay Grimoire right away.
If you have ever been a fan of titles such as the Wizardry series, Might & Magic, Eye of the Beholder, then you owe it to yourself to buy Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar. While many games that are released in this modern age attempt to emulate that old school feel there is none that does so as well as Grimoire which happily keeps itself firmly rooted in an era that has (unfortunately) passed by. Perhaps the most stunning achievement for those lovers of the classics is that it is not difficult to imagine Grimoire occupying shelf space right next to them and not being out of place.
The gameplay is deep and engaging, there are many races that can become many classes and at a certain level threshold can choose to multi class. The races and classes require attention, though, as there are bonuses and conflicts depending on what you select. A Vamphyr for example boasts an extremely notable resistance to magic, but during daylight hours their stats are hit with a 50% penalty. Drakes have lethal unarmed attacks due to their talons while Giants require special gear to really maximize their potential. Some of these races also come with special abilities such as Charm Person or Firebreath, in addition to their selected class skills.
Speaking of the classes, you will notice on character creation that some of them appear to be locked away. That is because these are seen as specialized or prestige classes. At Level 4 you may opt to dive into this system and tune your party to greater specifics. A Thief can become a deadly Assassin or perhaps a swashbuckling Pirate. The combinations for a party are expansive granting the player a plethora of customization when it comes to dealing with the dangers and trials that Grimoire has lying in wait.
Mysterious yet tastefully humorous, well-written, challenging, and carrying a sense of awe in its elegant presentation, Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar is a herculean passion project that deserves its praise.
This game is fantastic. It has so many care and work on how it is done, and the graphics look beautiful. Of course, you have to know that you buy an old school RPG, similar to Eye of the Beholder.
You also have to read the manual, learn how to play. Most of it is very intuitive and fun,but you have to read it, and easily you will remember all because it's very logical.
By reading the manual you immediately see how much depth the game has, and it's like reading a tabletop rpg manual. Everything in this game is made with love, dedication and lots of work. The programming should have taken a lot of time and effort.
The game is very open, it looks beautiful, and is very fun.
Of course, you will read reviews here of people who didn't like it. Those reviews are by people that:
- Don't know what they purchased, because they didn't read the description nor looked at the screenshots.
- Were born only some years ago, and never played a real RPG
- Ask for stunning modern graphics instead of colored old fashion graphics
- Don't like to read the manual, and pretend that a game of such depth works the way they want and not the way it was made
You also have to understand that this is old school in one more thing: you have to be cautious, gain levels as you learn how to play, read the manual first (again), and not pretend that the game forgives your mistakes. This is how we learned to play in the 80-90s: try, fail, re-try, then retry until perfection.
If you find this is for you, you will love this beautiful and fun game. I think it's the best in its genre.
