Honest review of GRIMOIRE

I played this game for a fair amount of time. I restarted a few times until I got a party composition that was enjoyable (while utilizing the multi classing system)... I even tried a few of the different starting points. I beat the first major area and quit pretty much immediately after. In a very short time, the game went from being difficult to extremely easy with boring fights. Dialogues with NPCs are repetitive as well - they bump into you with the random encounter music - and using the mind reading spell to get a keyword list was tedious. Graphically, I was loving the look but was disappointed by the strange movements of enemies and NPCs (they dance on the spot or cycle through odd poses) and within the first few hours there were numerous, extremely lazy, duplicates. For example, the Green Hand Gang is a palette swap of Mordecai, as well as being every other bandit (and don't get me started on the chant that repeats forever when fighting these guys "Ahheeeeshhhiiiohhhhh"). The dwarf who sells in town is the same drawing as the dwarven enemies you encounter shortly after. So its not often I just decide to stop playing a game, but these nagging issues and the boredom that was setting in led me to basically ask myself, why am I still playing this? Sidenote: I see the overall most helpful reviewer owns 0 games and has 1 review... so to also be helpful: Yes the game becomes very easy, boring and repetitive. I basically held ENTER every fight. The manual is definitely necessary. The game didn't need to hold my hand, its just minimalist and easy once you use the multi class system. I didn't encounter any bugs. I would disagree with doing oldschool RPG "extremely well."

rrr... zzzz.. rrrr. HEY? WHAT?

I'm already 52 years old. So, I know very well this type of vintage RPGs and am not surprised by its archaism and type of gameplay. This should be right up the alley of my cup of tea. Unfortunately, I can't afford to play "Grimoire". The fights are so painfully slow that I would die of old age before I reach the first village. (Turn-based RPG of the time, I mean the early 90s, don't drag like that during combats. What's the matter, here??) I'd advise those who are tempted to try this type of gameplay to play Wizardry 8 instead (reasonnably paced, and same type of mechanics with more comfort) . Too bad. Because you can feel "Grimoire"is a work of love, and very pretty too.

Ignore people ignoring the "haters"

People are saying there isn't a manual because there wasn't, despite it being promised, repeatedly, and not delivered. Anyone familiar with this developer, and his history, won't be surprised - the game was "in active development" for 20-some years, with endless promises to deliver that never panned out. Combat "can" be sped up, but remains pointlessly clunky and silly. 99% of the combats, which happen SUPER often even with "Rare" Or "Never?" set to encounter frequency, involve just holding enter. There's no reason to cast spells or waste time with tactics - just hack away mindlessly. But you can't hold numpad enter, you have to hold return enter, despite most controls being mouse-based. Also you don't "press" enter, you hold it, the entire combat, because you have to press it (or click!) for EVERY line of text, of which 4 pop up per attack/spell/etc. (or more, as spells show several lines per enemy affected). Tedious. The story/puzzles are obtuse and amateurish in writing. The game can't decide if it's trying to be silly, self-aware, or sarcastic.. and fails at all three. It isn't "balanced" by any stretch. You go from being one-shot to one-shotting everything, most combats are utter steamrolls in one direction or another. The Manual is inaccurate as of V3. The sound design is awful - sounds repeat constantly and annoyingly. Music changes from screens (inventory, level up, preparing combat actions, combat, etc.) and is jarring. Talking to NPCs is beyond nonsensical most of the time. Most other blobbers of the era this game supposedly "emulates and exceeds" are better, especially given most are a decade+ old. Grimoire attempts to emulate that formula, ignores/removes all QoL, ease of use, etc. (UI, sound design, inventory management, spell management, etc.) and passes it off as "difficult" or "classic." In reality it's a hamfisted attempt at best. And then if you add BACK in the developer's.. uh.. tendencies.. well. It doesn't paint any prettier a picture.

Good old school game

Being on the younger side, i didnt grow up with these types of games. My first look into them was with MM7 (Might & Magic 7), i worked my way back through the series and fell in love. I then moved onto Wizardary. I was unsure with this game since it came out and throught it maybe worth a pop while it was on offer. I tried it today and was hooked, it brought back the feelings of old. Whats around the next corner, can i find all the secrets and the fear of coming up agaisnts a monster to powerful. It has a simliar logic to Wizarday, will be looking forward to playing it again soon :)

A fix for a Wizardry 7 junkie

It is a spiritual clone of W7. Loved Wizardry 7? Then this game is for you. Prepare to not to like some aspects of it: - Monsters are not balanced: a 30 XP bat deals 18 damage per hit. - Some monsters instantly kill you ALWAYS. - Some monsters are plain ridiculous, like marines who just blow their wistles. - Logic of some monsters dealing two damages per hit is WTF. - Lots of monsters (pretty much all of them) have attack effects (poison, irritate, etc.) Ridiculous. - Most of the monsters have crazy number of attacks, like 8 and more per round. You characters have one each, occasionally (not clear why) they get extra two. - Stealing is broken - you can steal everything from many NPCs. So far only saw one that can catch me. Unbalanced. - Bartering is broken - sell/buy for the same price. - I heard killing NPCs (even bad ones) is really bad - everyone stops liking you. Just plain wrong. - Random is abused. Example: you can get 22 skill points for level up or 58, which forces folks like me to reload and it takes forever. Or getting 6 HP for your warrior (out of max 30, really?). In the end I was modifying saved file for good numbers after every level up using the Visual Studio 6 (its hex editor), thankfully the format of the save file is plain and simple and does not have any check sums. The game became playable. - Completely ridiculous and useless small window to view an item's properties. There is lots of info in there, but it is mostly useless and in many cases does not show essential parameters like AC of a ring or (two instances so far) damage of a weapon. Seriously, how can this be botched with W7 showing how it is done? What I liked: - Good old W7-like game. :) - Control of how many encounters you want. - Looks fine, plays fine. - Problems I described can be avoid with a reload or just ignoring them. So, despite of a long list of "bad things" I still give 5 stars for tremendous effort and something I like that you cannot find anymore these days.
