This is one of the most polished games to come out of Spiders and it's leaps ahead of it's earlier games. It also gives us the rare Age of Discovery era with just enough magic to make it enchanting. it it bites you it won't let you go.
*Disclaimer: I did not buy this here but on another site when it went on pre-order*
I would give this 4.5 out of 5.
Greedfall is a decent third person RPG.
A lot to do , plenty of mehanics , interesting story and characters but can be a grind sometimes.
The good:
Story and setting is interesting. All factions are inter linked and events are well fleshed out and make sense. All characeters have a personal arc to deal with. They all undergo change and they each have their own demons to face , as does the main character.
Combat is interesting offering a choice of melee , rifles , magic , traps which can be combined with ally skills. Monsters each have a pattern and a weakness you can exploit.
The meh
Interface is clunky and slow - hard to add multiple items to a sell/craft queue sometimes
Parts of the game feel generic. The buildings and forests have different layouts but after a while it just feels like you've seen it all. Maybe a palette choice or more landmarks to make stuff stand out ?
The bad
Fighting the same monsters 100 times over is not fun. Same for bosses
A LOT of running around to get things done. Every quest manages to branch out into more and more tasks.
Upgrading items is not as useful as it could be
Traps are often avoided by monsters making them not useful
Stealth is broken
I got endurance to level 5 only to NEVER find a piece of armor for that level. Come ot think of it content for endgame is rare - excluding swords/axes. Even a basic "gray" armor for level 5 would have been fine
TL;DR
It's worth getting at full price.
Decent RPG , a bit rough on skills but good story/setting overall.
Expect some frustrations on the combat part as things move on. (pro-tip start as a warrior and re-spec later)
I LOVE good rpgs. And I particularly appreciated old bioware/obsidian games. Therefore, as soon as I saw how many people compared this game to the old golden age of roleplay games, I decided to give it a try.
My first impressions were very good : nice graphics, a great introduction to the story, character personalization, and everything else you expect to find in a good RPG.
So, why is this not a 5/5 ?
Why can't I fast travel whenever I want ? (would be okay if this game wasn't mostly running around)
Why do every quest imply more running around than actual questing ?
Why are the natives a bunch of earth-loving hippies attacked by the evul european-like people (who happen to have an inclusive multi-ethnic society, for some reason) AGAIN ? I mean, it was already over-done when Avatar came out. Most factions are unsufferable clichés anyway.
Why, why why why ?
Why is this not a 0 then ?
Well, as I said, good graphics. good quests with multiple ways to solve the problem. Original setting (XVIIth century fantasy ? Love it !), likable characters, and many other qualities.
Honestly, after seeing some screenshots, i thought it will be "goofy" with too big weapons, clothing and design overall.
Yet the atmoshpere is good, and the setting makes a lot of sense.
Maybe it's not enough rpg for some hardcore gamers, (rather witcher style than morrowind for sure), but i got attracted to it.
Sometimes there's too much running across the map, but the travel system is ok, and sometimes quests allow you to fast travel instantly anyway.
Decent RPG, has a little too much walking for my preference & no mounts. DLC was bugged for me, a lot of NPCs had missing models (ie hair, or torso or only see there head). Not a great game, but is a good game to pass the time when you have beaten/played most of the AAA games. Wait for a sale, took me about 25 hours casually playing to beat (relaxed pace, doing about half the side quests in game). Has many different methods to play the game & different endings, choices effect heavily on almost every part of the game. Definetly has a lot of replayability (if you have the patience for it)
