You arrive home after a year abroad. You expect your family to greet you, but the house is empty. Something's not right. Where is everyone? And what's happened here? Unravel the mystery for yourself in Gone Home, a story exploration game from The Fullbright Company.
Gone Home is an interactive exploration simulator. Interrogate every detail of a seemingly normal house to discover the story of the people who live there. Open any drawer and door. Pick up objects and examine them to discover clues. Uncover the events of one family's lives by investigating what they've left behind.
Go Home Again.
A Personal Story: created by veterans of the BioShock series and the writer behind Minerva's Den, Gone Home offers the rich, nuanced details of one family's struggles to deal with uncertainty, heartache, and change.
An Immersive Place: return to the 1990s by visiting a home where every detail has been carefully recreated, and the sounds of a rainstorm outside wrap you in the experience.
No Combat, No Puzzles: Gone Home is a nonviolent and puzzle-free experience, inviting you to play at your own pace without getting attacked, stuck, or frustrated. This house wants you to explore it.
Fully Interactive Investigation: discover what's happened to the Greenbriars by examining a house full of the family's personal possessions, and the notes and letters they've left behind. Use your powers of observation to piece together a story that unfolds as you explore.

Like another reviewer said, this isn't a game. This is a short "find the key" experiment with a bad story driving it along. There are no puzzles. There is no challenge. There are no obstacles to overcome. No skill or thought is necessary to complete it.
This isn't a game.
This game is quite polarizing, and I'm one of those who falls into the positive camp. Yes, it is quite short and the gameplay is overly simplistic even for an adventure game, but this little gem transcends all that with its story and atmosphere. The story starts out feeling like a murder mystery or even a supernatural horror game, but as it progresses it turns out to be a much more personal and engaging story about growing up and finding oneself that will keep you mesmerized until the very end. The immersion is helped greatly thanks to the loving recreation of the 90s that game takes place in and the fascinating side stories you can investigate as you go. I took off a star because of the length. It's hard to justify even a $10 price tag for three hours of game play (5-6 if you look into the side content), so wait for it to go on sale to get the best bang for the buck. Despite its faults, the heart warming story and incredibly detailed, nostalgia-laden setting make this game so much more than so many of the reviews here make it out to be.
This game was an interesting experience for me as I went in expecting a horror. The game does cultivate a bit of a horror element, so I kept waiting for the jump scares. After a while though, I began to realise the game was more about unfolding a larger story. If you're the kind of person who skips through dialogue in games, this probably isn't the one for you. But if you like the idea of being a detective, and piecing together random elements to create a bigger whole, then this game is for you.
Gone Home is a walking simulator, so it's going to be a short, narrative-based experience. Reading through the reviews left here, there are several that are akin to a "Don't like music. 2 stars for the beer" critique of a concert. Those feel like terribly unfair reviews to leave.
For anyone who lived through the 90's, particularly the Riot Grrrl movement, this is a gem. Parts will remind you of your own childhood and teens, and Gone Home is almost worth it for nostalgia's sake alone. It has a creepy feel to it too, though I'm still uncertain whether that's down to the isolated, eerie atmosphere or because it's like visiting a forgotten memory, twisted and resurrected.
There's a peculiar coming of age story to be found in it too. People may not enjoy it, and that's fine, though I found it ruffled me plenty. It's not a blockbuster of a story, it's simply a about some people and the struggles they endured in their ordinary lives. As many people share the same struggle, it deserves to be told whatever some of the reviews here believe.
And for those who feel free of this struggle - we did this for you.
I don't really understand all of the negative reviews for this game, I thought it was pretty cool. As of this writing the game is only 5 dollars, so it's a great time to pick it up. Just like the game says, its an interactive exploration simulator. You're not a space marine, a special forces operative with robot limbs, an ex-cop security specialist with robot limbs, or a drugged-out Italian maintenance worker (with robot limbs). You're a girl home from college, and when you arrive you can tell something is wrong in your house. Interact and explore your simulated environment to find out what the hell is going on. Approach it like a book. What you see may not be reality.
Like I said, its 5 bucks. buy it and enjoy the story.
