You arrive home after a year abroad. You expect your family to greet you, but the house is empty. Something's not right. Where is everyone? And what's happened here? Unravel the mystery for yourself in Gone Home, a story exploration game from The Fullbright Company.
Gone Home is an interactive exploration simulator. Interrogate every detail of a seemingly normal house to discover the story of the people who live there. Open any drawer and door. Pick up objects and examine them to discover clues. Uncover the events of one family's lives by investigating what they've left behind.
Go Home Again.
A Personal Story: created by veterans of the BioShock series and the writer behind Minerva's Den, Gone Home offers the rich, nuanced details of one family's struggles to deal with uncertainty, heartache, and change.
An Immersive Place: return to the 1990s by visiting a home where every detail has been carefully recreated, and the sounds of a rainstorm outside wrap you in the experience.
No Combat, No Puzzles: Gone Home is a nonviolent and puzzle-free experience, inviting you to play at your own pace without getting attacked, stuck, or frustrated. This house wants you to explore it.
Fully Interactive Investigation: discover what's happened to the Greenbriars by examining a house full of the family's personal possessions, and the notes and letters they've left behind. Use your powers of observation to piece together a story that unfolds as you explore.

Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
(A few years ago, finished on ps4 for free, I decided to buy it, because I like to support developers with these kinds of intentions).
An atmospheric Indie game, with tendencies more towards the realistic. I really like these types of games that tell their story from the documents that you collect, as well as mementos. It is very honest and not at all pretentious. Very interesting. Only very short.
A creepy house, with a mystery hidden inside. However some of the things are not what they seem.
I liked the story, it felt realistic for the most of time which is a very important thing for a story-driven game. As for the game itself, well it's a walking simulator so don;t expect too much excitement :)
Walking Sims seem to fall in a grey area for most gamers where you either get them or you don't. Not really a game? Sure that can be argued though by comparison so could most of the text based adventure games of yesteryear, especially those classics of linear storytelling requiring one to type verbs, nouns and adjectives until the exact combination derived of the designers is randomly located to progress the story.
No doubt the same can be said of almost any graphical point and click game with single shot solutions to puzzles and a requirement to click furiously on every pixel in the hope of hitting the sweet spot.
Games such as Edith Finch, Firewatch and indeed Gone Home are simply the next cycle on this type of genre and at least for me have proven adequate and at time brilliant forms of storytelling.
Perhaps given the demands of an adult life I actually appreciate a game that does not require hundreds of hours to complete (I play those too) such is life in 2018.
Gone Home does stray too far from the tried and tested formula of the walking sim and so obviously if you are reading this still you will likely know if this type of game is for you or not.
I found the tale to be engrossing and enjoyed every minute of its slow explorative nature and reveal process.
So with Gone Home you will get a great story and lovely environment to explore along with a gentle gaming XP..
You won't get a hugely challenging game and nothing much that amounts to a call to actions whatsoever so choose wisely.
For those who enjoy storytelling and don't mind being on rails
.
Let me start by saying: if you like the kind of games with emotional stories, then don't listen to the haters, this IS a masterpiece.
It's true that this is like Dear Esther, more an interactive experience than a game, but that's not a weakness at all. It's a short experience and the story is not "deep", but that isn't a weakness either.
This game really shines in it's details. The story is set in 1995, and each and every pixel is designed to reflect that age, from the books and the snes, to smaller details like the stereograms (wich I found an excellent small touch).
True the story is not too deep, but the game guides you through it with excactly the pace it needs to. Also, the story is solid and well written, is way too real (if a little unbelievable), from the sister's speech to the reactions of every character. It really touched me.
From all this you may understand why there's a lot of bad reviews to this game, mostly from people who looked for something else here, and didn't understand what this was all about. If you cried with games like Life is Strange or To The Moon, then give this a try. If you're looking for anything else, look somewhere else.
I honestly absolutely adored this game; it gave me a huge roller coaster of emotions in a good way, from suspense to adoration to concern to absolute joy. I enjoyed the love story and how it was both a sort of teenage crisis (especially given it takes place in the 90's) and a coming out story.
I also loved the 90's vibe and references; I had a lot of my childhood rush back to me while playing, and that was definitely something that I enjoyed, plus the music in game was AMAZING. I really hope it's available elsewhere as well, I'd love to listen to it again when I can.
The only major critique I have is the story of the main character and her sister's uncle; while I understand it was supposed to show how it was harder for Sam to meet people in their new home, I felt that was the only part of the game that fell flat; I believe if that was either pursued a little more (perhaps given more of an explanation on why he was thought to be crazy and more about him as well) or completely dropped for the most part, I think this game would have elevated itself to a hit LGBTQ+ game.
Overall, very enjoyable, and I highly recommend it to people who want a sweet, touching story and to fellow LGBTQ+ community members!
