STAKE YOUR CLAIM

In the world of Going Medieval, dark age society is on its knees. At the end of the 14th century, 95% of the global population has perished due to rampant plague.

Eventually, survivors emerge from society’s ashes, and it’s now up to you to help them settle in a dangerous new land reclaimed by nature. Build your people a home, help shape their lives, and protect them from animals, bandits, and other dangers in a lawless post-calamity age.

BUILD YOUR FORTRESS

Design, build and expand your settlement from a small wooden hut into a colossal stone castle. With simple-to-use 3D terrain tools you can create the perfect stronghold, from winding underground caverns to sprawling multi-story forts.

DEFEND YOUR COLONY

This harsh new world is rife with external threats, but you can give your colonists the upper hand in battle by building impenetrable defences and traps. Research, craft and equip weapons and gear so that they can fight back against unrelenting waves of attackers.

PROTECT YOUR VILLAGERS

Your colonists have more than just raids to contend with. They need protection from starvation and the elements, so it’s essential to stock up on supplies and build shelter to keep them fed and warm. Maintain your villagers’ emotional states, as their moods are affected if their needs and wants aren’t met.

SHAPE YOUR STORY

Grow the population of your settlement by helping out strangers in dangerous situations, or by taking in like-minded travellers. Your villagers have personal histories and agendas, and you can get to know them by observing their behaviour and relationships with others.

Medieval micromanaging

If games like rimworld, oxygen not included and banished is your thing, then this is for you. Concidering it's in development still, there are some bugs and lack of content to take into concideration. I've not had any game breaking bug happen, so that's a good indication. Grapichs is simple polygonal and works good in my opinion. The music features medieval tunes, which I really like. Sound design is also good, with well done ambient. The game is simple enough to get into and pretty easy to learn. With time though the game does become a bit monotonus and it shows that there are many features not yet implemented. Gameplay does take a fair amount of micomanaging at times, but for the most part your villagers will manage tasks on their own so long as you've given instructions. I had some issues with the camera and layer design as chaning layers is very flowing and sometimes easy to go too far (or not far enough) between them. Building is also a little tedious since working with the layers the cursor will at times want to stop on another layer from the one you want to click on. To cancel an action it requires you to change modes, i.e. going from build mode into cancel mode everytime you misclick. Destroying buildings/obejcts can also be tedious, again because of layers and the mouse highlighting something on another layer. With this said, I think that with time this will be a real gem of a game. Some things I would like to see implemented is trading with NPC settlements, replacing/upgrading already build walls and ability to build ladders instead of just stairs for movement between levels. At one point I could not finish a staricase in a tight spot since there were debris in the way, which was also unreachable by my villagers. Looking forward to see what will become of this. Should you get it? As it is early access, I will say to take that into concideration, this it far from a complete game as of me writing this, but it does have potential. If unceratin, then wait.

Where did my time go?

Looking back at my records for last night I see that I spent over 8 hours playing this game. In that time my original 3 villagers were joined by 4 others. 1 was killed in a raid and later replaced. After the first year my village had 7 members, a house with room for 8, Fields that produced more than could be stored, a storage building that couldn't get large enough, and a defensive tower to use when fighting off the raiders. I found myself invested in the lives of my villagers. I learned things about the world's mechanics, such as if you dig a large underground room the ceiling will colaps if you don't use beams. I am looking forward to playing again tonight, I have plans to start a new village using what I learned last night. As others have stated the game is good as it is, I think I got my money's worth last night. I am looking forward to the additional planned features. I would also like to see a reproduction system so that the village can grow on its own without have to wait on random people to come by.

Pretty good

I have put a few hours into this game now and I can highly recommend it. Graphically it's not much, but it's more then passable. Gameplay, however, is very decent. If you are someone that likes to build mega type structures (think minecraft) then this game will be very fun for you, however, if all you buildings turn out like square boxes then maybe less so. But the basic colony sim like gameplay is here, gather resources, cut trees, make weapons, fight raiders, etc. What is there is worth picking up in my opinion, but if the devs get in everything in that is planned then this game might just be a hidden gem. If I had any real complaint it would be the way you get new villagers, which is via a random event... I would have rather seen an aging type system where villages could produce offspring and die.

Super impressive already.

What stuck out to me most during my first few hours were the intuitive interface and building. Usually in games like these I expect to die from missing some resource that isn't even displayed anywhere on screen or for ignoring some event because there's been so many meaningless alerts spammed that I've stopped checking any of them. I experienced none of this in Going Medieval. At one point the it suggested I build a cellar for food to be cool under the summer so I thought to dig a hole and cover it up with wood. After ten minutes I started thinking it probably can't be that easy so I googled to see the right way to do it; but no, it really was that simple and straightforward - there's no special dimensions and quirky requirements like in some survival games (looking at you, Vintage Story). Another thing I liked about the building is that it's not restrictive and it feels like you could probably build some amazing structures here, be it skyscrapers or underground lairs. Being 3D, it gets closer to scratching that Sims itch in ways that Dwarf Fortress and Rimworld simply can't. It's worth mentioning that it does have a peaceful mode, so if you're just interested in building up your community and focusing exclusively on survival, you can do that without worrying raiders deleting your existence. You can also customize everything about the starting conditions and your colonists, including the number of them you start out with, so you could just as well start off all alone. All in all, what I found went way beyond my expectations and I'd recommend it even at full price without hesitation.

Everything I ever wanted

I have always wished for the following: - A City sim that was intuitive - RPG elements that made you attached to the citizens - Economy + Warfare + Management + Survival - Simple but effective graphics (focus on gameplay!) - Customizable difficulty This game has all that, and makes it look easy, which is the most impressive thing of all. You get to build your own town, guide your settlers, survive and thrive while holding invading kingdoms at bay. And this is in early access! If this was the full release, I would still think of it as a wonderful little indie game, complete as it is! I cannot wait to see what the devs churn out in the next update. This game has a bright future, and all other similar games will be forever measured against it for me. It does everything right. The only downside is that it is, well, in early access, which means several features are missing. But even so, I still consider this a complete game. 10/10 from me, and I will keep an eyeon this developer from now on!
