Whether you are drawn to the lands of Gloomhaven by the call of adventure or an avid desire for the glimmer of gold in the dark, your fate will surely be the same…
Lead your band of mercenaries through this unforgiving place, where every choice is crucial. Carve your way through terrifying dungeons, dreadful forests and dark caves filled with horrific monsters to reap your rewards… or die trying.
Sell your sword to anyone who can afford it, may they be city officials or corrupt cultists. You are paid to get results and not ask questions. Where will you draw the line?
Gloomhaven is a tactical RPG and a digital adaptation of the ultimate strategy board game by Isaac Childres (the highest-rated board game of all time on BoardGameGeek). Set in a unique medieval dark fantasy universe, Gloomhaven rewards strategic planning and problem solving. Face this dark world alone or in online co-op for up to 4 players!
Explore the world in a band of 2 to 4 mercenaries. Each of the 17 unique characters comes with their own skills and more than 1,000 different abilities to master! Prepare your deck of ability cards before setting out to explore the dark caves and dreadful forest of Gloomhaven through quests and events.
Once inside a dungeon, engage in tactical turn-based combat by selecting two cards for each mercenary on every turn. You can only use the top half of one and the bottom half of another, so plan accordingly!
Move up your hired blades on the hex grid terrain to take advantage of the dungeon’s environment. Set up deadly combos and unleash devastating powers but be wary of the cost. Cards are a resource as scarce and crucial as your life points, so watch out for exhaustion. Every choice has life or death consequences.
Hone your abilities during the game with enhancements and perks, while your power increases with level ups and new equipment. You need every advantage you can to survive here. So, gear up your band of mercenaries, chase powerful artifacts, buy the favor of the Great Oak, and never let your guard down.
Adapted from the original Gloomhaven Board Game, this branching campaign of 95 story missions pits your greed against your morality. Many powerful opponents are vying for control over the city of Gloomhaven while others are looking for ancient crypts and forgotten artefacts. You could always side with the inhabitants, but it may not pay well… Whatever your path may be, it will be paved with difficult choices.
Created in collaboration with the community during the early access, the Guildmaster adventure has more than 160 exclusive digital missions that allow you to experience another facet of Gloomhaven with new storylines, quests, map and NPCs.
Lead your guild of mercenaries in a region overrun by unspeakable things, far worse than simple bandits.
Choose the best combination of mercenaries for each fight and follow their character stories in this deadly new territory.
The game itself is mostly fine though riddled with bugs.
The multiplayer requires GOG Galaxy since the release of the DLC. This was not the case before the DLC was released, and due to the implementation of the multiplayer through invite codes, which do not require any interaction with Galaxy, this limitation is completely unnecessary and overall just a nuisance for anyone who does not want to install Galaxy to play their DRM-free games. The developers seemingly did this because they want to force at least some kind of DRM into the DRM-free GOG version.
The updates on the GOG version are usually delayed and sometimes even only accessible through the Galaxy launcher. If you plan on buying this game in its current state and plan on playing multiplayer, you are probably better off buying the Steam version since Gloomhaven requires a launcher in both the GOG and the Steam version for it. On Steam, you at least don't get delayed updates; it is more stable, and you get access to the beta versions.
It's one of those games where combat is just so good you can't stop. You start playing with a pal, have a couple of beers and all of sudden it's morning. Love it and recommend it. Practically zero bugs, great sound, extremely well paced difficulty (with the exception of that beginning scenario of course haha).
I bought this recently.
It simply doesn't work. Hangs forever on loading.
In attempt to diagnose.. and with a suspicious mind.. I installed Galaxy temporarily.
Then it loads.
If I wanted bloat bullsiht running on my PC I would just use Steam,
I think the only things that prevent me from giving a 4,5-5 stars are the seriously insufficient tutorial and baaaaad user interface.
Aside from that, however, if you take the time to learn the game and understand it's a board game adaptation, it's absolutely fantastic. Performance issues can occasionally happen but this isn't a game you play for looks.
I really like this game: good graphics, nice music, very immersive theme, excellent mechanics, A LOT of missions (I played 52 already, and I haven't finished the campaign yet), two different game modes, a lot of different classes (13 for sure, 16 by the description). Very smart and extremely puzzly gameplay which I adore, nice take on skills, items and enchants, good character progression, very good game pace and scenarios that are tense enough, yet quick enough they don't overstay their welcome. Awesome retiring character moment, nice balance between short term tactical goals and overarching campaign goals. Variety, planning, almost no luck when you understand the systems. Challenging on normal, but still very fair. It grabbed me when I understood the systems and doesn't seem it will let me go anytime soon ;-)
On the bad side: chests and gold piles are not easy to spot, they should really be marked much clearer. The mechanics, while extremely smart when you do get them, are explained really badly, so watching the rules video (preferably about board game version, as those seems to explain rules better) is a must IMO. The map layout is not presented in the PC version (while present in board game version) so you can either cheat (via checking .pdf with scenario book from board game) or not be able to prepare for each scenario separately, which I find to be really troublesome on hard/very hard difficulty. The combat is abstracted a bit in this game and while still immersive, I would back it up just one step. And optimalization of this game seems a bit off too, as it consumes a lot of system resources while no part of it really should do that to a modern hardware.
Overall, a really great game, puzzly as all get-out, but I love that about it. Not perfect, but I very much recommend it, giving it 9/10.
