Whether you are drawn to the lands of Gloomhaven by the call of adventure or an avid desire for the glimmer of gold in the dark, your fate will surely be the same…
Lead your band of mercenaries through this unforgiving place, where every choice is crucial. Carve your way through terrifying dungeons, dreadful forests and dark caves filled with horrific monsters to reap your rewards… or die trying.
Sell your sword to anyone who can afford it, may they be city officials or corrupt cultists. You are paid to get results and not ask questions. Where will you draw the line?
Gloomhaven is a tactical RPG and a digital adaptation of the ultimate strategy board game by Isaac Childres (the highest-rated board game of all time on BoardGameGeek). Set in a unique medieval dark fantasy universe, Gloomhaven rewards strategic planning and problem solving. Face this dark world alone or in online co-op for up to 4 players!
Explore the world in a band of 2 to 4 mercenaries. Each of the 17 unique characters comes with their own skills and more than 1,000 different abilities to master! Prepare your deck of ability cards before setting out to explore the dark caves and dreadful forest of Gloomhaven through quests and events.
Once inside a dungeon, engage in tactical turn-based combat by selecting two cards for each mercenary on every turn. You can only use the top half of one and the bottom half of another, so plan accordingly!
Move up your hired blades on the hex grid terrain to take advantage of the dungeon’s environment. Set up deadly combos and unleash devastating powers but be wary of the cost. Cards are a resource as scarce and crucial as your life points, so watch out for exhaustion. Every choice has life or death consequences.
Hone your abilities during the game with enhancements and perks, while your power increases with level ups and new equipment. You need every advantage you can to survive here. So, gear up your band of mercenaries, chase powerful artifacts, buy the favor of the Great Oak, and never let your guard down.
Adapted from the original Gloomhaven Board Game, this branching campaign of 95 story missions pits your greed against your morality. Many powerful opponents are vying for control over the city of Gloomhaven while others are looking for ancient crypts and forgotten artefacts. You could always side with the inhabitants, but it may not pay well… Whatever your path may be, it will be paved with difficult choices.
Created in collaboration with the community during the early access, the Guildmaster adventure has more than 160 exclusive digital missions that allow you to experience another facet of Gloomhaven with new storylines, quests, map and NPCs.
Lead your guild of mercenaries in a region overrun by unspeakable things, far worse than simple bandits.
Choose the best combination of mercenaries for each fight and follow their character stories in this deadly new territory.
I purchased this game specifically for a multiplayer session with some friends. Before the day, I downloaded it, installed it, made sure it ran, and played through the tutorial to familiarise myself with the controls. I double-checked that the game description on GOG said that it was compatible for cross-play with the Steam version. I was being careful, or so I thought, to ensure that I wouldn't hold people up by not being ready to join the server.
Then, on the day, I opened the multiplayer menu to join the server ... and the "join game" button was greyed out. No explanation, no mouseover hint as to why this might be the case. For completeness, I went through the convoluted process of hosting a game - going through a painful tutorial on starting a game, making my friends wait all the while, to reach the point where I had an active game that I could turn into a multiplayer session ... only to find out that option was disabled, too.
I purchased this game to do one thing - join a multiplayer session - and it wouldn't let me do it, and wouldn't even give any indication why.
I own the Gloomhaven boardgame and enjoy it a fair bit. When this version was released, I was excited that I'd now be able to play the game with my friends around the world. I got the game in late December, 2021, and it worked well enough (though there are issues with the UI, and a few other problems; 8urnsky's review matches my experiences, though I'm less critical about the problems and would rate the game between 3-4 stars if not for the online issue). However, some recent patches have now removed the ability to play online if you do not have Galaxy installed. I don't use Galaxy for the same reasons many other people don't and, if Gloomhaven's store page had said it required Galaxy to play online, I would not have bought the game. As of October 8, 2022, the store page still does not say that Galaxy is required to play the game online. I am extremely frustrated that the game I purchased can no longer be used online: playing online was the only reason I bought it! This review is intended to be a warning for others who don't use Galaxy -- if you want to play the game online, you can't -- and as a plea to the developers to either fix this issue or return my money. I already own the boardgame; if this game doesn't have online play, I don't need it.
This game must rock with a group of friends around a table, but honestly it is designed to be played that way, the PC version is simply disapointing and becomes boring very fast.
Also optimization is rock bottom, loading screens take plenty time which doesn't exactly add to the experience and you need a pretty good PC to high in the specs settings, it is really baffling how many UNITY games eat resources only to offer a subpar experience.
I'm not really sure why I've played this as long as I have. I'm a completionist and I just want to get to the end so I can stop.
It's basically a challenging puzzle card game - and a good one. Each turn you have to try to figure out how to cause maximum damage with the abilities available to you. But that's it. There is no crafting. The loot system is awful. Every enemy carries the same amount of gold, and you can't pick it up unless you end the turn in the same hex as the gold. No enemies carry items, you only get one per mission as a reward if you're lucky. Really? The RPGs I played on my Amiga 25 years ago had better loot systems.
Every mission is basically the same. There isn't much variation in enemies. The maps are small and unimaginative. Please make it stop?
The game itself is mostly fine though riddled with bugs.
The multiplayer requires GOG Galaxy since the release of the DLC. This was not the case before the DLC was released, and due to the implementation of the multiplayer through invite codes, which do not require any interaction with Galaxy, this limitation is completely unnecessary and overall just a nuisance for anyone who does not want to install Galaxy to play their DRM-free games. The developers seemingly did this because they want to force at least some kind of DRM into the DRM-free GOG version.
The updates on the GOG version are usually delayed and sometimes even only accessible through the Galaxy launcher. If you plan on buying this game in its current state and plan on playing multiplayer, you are probably better off buying the Steam version since Gloomhaven requires a launcher in both the GOG and the Steam version for it. On Steam, you at least don't get delayed updates; it is more stable, and you get access to the beta versions.
