Enhance your Frostpunk experience - buy Season Pass now to save 30% on all DLCs and get the Frostpunk soundtrack for free.

"(...) this is a game about finding reasons to survive rather than just the means to go on living."

- Adam Smith, Rock, Paper, Shotgun

"In a steampunk ice age, the only thing that can be crueler than the bitter cold are the decisions you have to make to keep your people alive."

- Stephanie Chan, VentureBeat

"(...) decisions push your morality to its limits for the sake of productivity, which could make for an captivating, draining adventure when the game releases later this year."

- Suriel Vazquez, Game Informer

In an ultimately frozen world, people develop steam-powered technology to oppose the overwhelming cold. The city ruler has to manage both the inhabitants and the infrastracture the citizens live in. Leader’s tactical skills face challenges, frequently questioning morality and the basic foundation of what we consider an organized society. Here optimization and resource management often clash with empathy and thoughtful decision-making. While city and society management consume most of the ruler’s time, at some point exploration of outside world is necessary to understand its history and present state.

What decisions will you make so the society can survive? What will you do when pushed to the limits? And...

...who will you become in the process?

THE CITY MUST SURVIVE

Frostpunk is a city-survival game where heat means life and every decision comes with a cost.

MAINTAIN THE HOPE

Survival is about hope and will to live. Your ability to spark and maintain these two in your people will be a determinant factor for success.

MAKE THE LAW

Society is a group of people abiding the same rules and sharing similar beliefs. Establishing laws and customs will be a crucial factor shaping your society.

WEIGHT YOUR CHOICES

Will you allow child-labour? How will you treat the sick and wounded? Frostpunk challenges a player’s tactical skills, while questioning one’s morality.

EXPLORE

The world covers not only bits of the past but also the potential means to secure the future of your people.

Good with a couple frustrating things

Space around the generator or steam hubs is precious. Unless you go through a really tedious process to cheese the grid, many buildings will take up significantly more space depending on how the game rounds up the grid. It's done to maintain asthetics at the sacrifice of screwing you out of precious space. If they would just increase housing/worker capacity of these buildings based on how much extra space the building took up then it'd be fine. Scouts carrying precious steam cores who arrive a dreadnought which requies steam cores to enter safely, don't get the option because the cores aren't at your base yet. So they get sent to their death and you also lose the steam cores they're carrying. Very frustrating. Usually these things would be enough for me to flip the table and be done with it, but otherwise this is such a great game with relaxing gameplay I look past it. I usually don't care about sound or music, but this does both well. I love the art and the little bits of writing. It does a good job of creating an interesting backstory without being tedious or on the nose, something that many games try but don't quite get right.

Boring and unrealistic

The idea sounds promising - a city builder and survival game in a steampunk setting. However, the game very quickly becomes a drag and just isn't fun to play. Here are some of the issues I have with this game: - Temperature jumps are completely random and make no sense. The developers didn't even pretend to create something like a real weather model. Temperatures are always in tens of degrees celsius, so it's either exactly -40, -50, -60 or -70 degrees. Jumps by 20 deg often occur within seconds, and it is often warmer at night and gets colder while the sun comes up. - The behavior of your people makes no sense. When the temperature drops drastically, you have no choice but to to crank up the generator or people will freeze to death and important buildings will shut down. Naturally, your city consumes more coal now, which will not be sustainable for long, so there is only one right reaction imaginable in this scenario: adding emergency shifts in the coal mines. but guess what - your people don't like it, and threaten to depose you over it... would they rather freeze to death? - Many buildings looks quite similar. They also have to be built very closely together. This has the effect that once your city gets a little bigger, you will be spending much of your time trying to find something on the colorless and bland map. - Building roads is often fun in other city builders.... but not here. You are very restricted in how to lay out your city, and the roads are just an unnecessary, annoying extra that doesn't add any value. It almost feels like the devs added building roads just because all city builders have it. - The music is unbearable. After an hour I had to turn it off. - It#s poorly optimized... despite having a very powerful machine, the game was always laggy for me and reducing the gaphic settings did nothing. - It's annoying that the Frostpunk 2 ad comes up every time you start the game.

Ok, but tedious

Enjoyable for a while, but ultimately repetitive with seemingly no way to really please the people you're expected to lead. I must be missing some crucial game mechanic cause I can have 100+ people available, but none of them will build the houses etc I've got queued up. I can only assume they're too busy complaining to actually help rectify the problem. I'm sure I'll get back into the game at some point perhaps.

I really want to love it.....

I have played through the main campaign several times and enjoyed it. The game starts off great and really sucks you in. The game feels like a city builder at first, but reveals itself as more of a puzzle game than a real city builder. It feels like you need to follow a certain specific path to win the game. Expect to go through and lose several times as you learn the "right way" to run your colony. The city building is fun and interesting, but you do have to be careful with placement as later buildings will provide bonuses in a certain area. Once you learn all the buildings, it isfun to plan your building well in advance. The storyline isn't anything special, but does increase the dread as time goes on. The feeling of loneliness and worry as the temp drops and resources start running low really adds to the desperation you feel playing. My 2 biggest complaints are the game is short and very linear. The scope is limited to your single crater with a brief way to interact with the outer world. The setup and events are set in stone and never change. This really hurts longevity. i think I played 10-20 hours, but don't really feel the desire to do more. The other issue is the way you place your buildings will come back to bite you until you learn all the buildings and how they interact. This doomed several of my early attempts through the game. The game is also short. Once you get the hang of it you can easily beat the campaign in 2-3 hours. I do recommend the game because I enjoyed my time with it, but I wish there was more to it.

most captivating

rarely have i played a city builder that glued me to my seat like this one. though you don't need many apm there's a constant sense of urgency. everything about the presentation reinforces the atmosphere of surviving the iceage. the screen edges freeze, the sounds change, the music is just superb. this game also manages to tell a story which is unusual in this genre. can't wait for frostpunk 2.
