Freedom Planet is a combat-based platform adventure that pits a spunky dragon girl and her friends against an alien attack force. There's trouble around every turn, from insects to giant robots to sheer explosive destruction, but you'll have a variety of special fighting abilities to blast your way through each stage.

As Lilac, you can use Dragon powers to whip enemies with your hair, spin like a cyclone, or fly through the air at high speed like a comet. As Carol, you can bust through foes with a flurry of punches and kicks or summon motorcycles that let you ride up walls and ceilings.
  • Dash across the celestial world of Avalice with boosts, bikes and other high-speed gimmicks to achieve the fastest time or explore at your own pace to find hidden paths and treasures.
  • Battle tons of quirky bosses including giant robots, towering alien creatures and aggressive rivals.
  • Help Lilac and friends save their world from war in an engaging Adventure mode with fully voiced cutscenes.

An example of what games should be; fun.

I got this game on steam years ago (and then got the Indiebox later), and my only complaint is that they ruined the story/cutscenes in update 1.21.1. Yes; this actually matters, and was quite offensive in its reasoning. Hopefully you can still play versions 1.20.4 and prior to get the epitomal experience through file settings or such. If not... well, maybe it's in bad tastes to say so on a competing provider, but you can do so on steam. In short, this is a game in the style of classic Sonic titles, but you have combat instead of contact damage, and a health bar instead of rings. It works very well. Although Lilac seems to be the better experience of the two characters. I recommend choosing her for the initial playthrough for this reason. The music is great. It's sad the OST doesn't appear to be sold on this site. While I already have it, gog players are missing out. It's one of the only OSTs that I can really say you SHOULD buy. This title was enjoyable the whole way through for me, and to such an extent that I was left thoughtful after finishing it. The realization I was left with was simply this: most games aren't actually that fun. Seriously! Think about it. How many games do you play that actually upset you? Call it ironic, but this title was so enjoyable for me that you could argue it made me less a gamer. Sure, I like Hollow Knight and Crosscode too (and have even put more time into them), but Freedom Planet 1.20.4 is something special.

A Spitual Successor to the Sonic Clone

This throwback to the bit-war era of platformers seems to getting 'harassed' by some unseen bogeymen who punch it down as some forgettable Sonic the Hedgehog clone, with its kid-freindly-wide-eyed-furry-based platforming and all; as a result, I see a lot of reviewers protect it and I find it mildly obnoxious. The truth is that ,well, apart from some additions it is very much a Sonic clone. And that is by no means a fault. I have a couple complaints about this game, but its aesthetic is nothing to do with it. In fact, I say it's welcome. Sonic the Hedgehog has been on rocky ground for awhile now and many like to call back to thine olden days when the blue blur was good. It was during that time we had a lot of cash-ins: some good, some bad, but mostly throwaways. In a time when gaming's most beloved/hated rodent has provided little to provide what many nostalgics really want, Freedom Planet delivers. Due to constraints I can't offer my whole insight so, here's what you need to know: PROS -Passionately designed levels and gameplay; doesn't paint-by-numbers like clones of yesteryear. -Boss battles that actually put up a fight -Fun story -Lead characters are part-dragon and a biker chick, respectively. -Looks up to its retro aesthetic; not down for irony CONS -Writing and acting is cheesy at times -Too easy at first, then difficulty goes all over the map mid-game. Conclusion This is the Sonic clone we could've had back in the day, and the Sonic -game- we deserve now. The demo is available on Steam and the developer's website: definitely check it out.

Hard, but fun.

First , i wanted to mention that this game is no much of Sonic as many write. Yeah, certainly there is some bits and ideas was taken from Sonic, but not that much. Moreover, i kinda fell it more similar to Bubsy then Sonic if you dont want to play it fast. Once you go to explore levels you quicly find a lot of various path, caves, treasures and stuff. Even more, there is "vertical layers" and no main road allowing you to complete level several time with new experience each time. Not often you see game designed this way. As for gameplay itself its mix of platforming, charming story, supercute characters, lot of nice jokes and, somewhat, challenging fights with bosses. Game becomes quite hard pretty quickly and even with a lot of health and plenty of heath powerups you will find yourself sweating a lot. Some levels little too much hectic and action intensive for me. Thanks game dont make you to repeat whole level in case of death at boss fight. Graphically there is nothing to whine about. Its colorful, its bright, not to excess, its "16-bit", but not in hardcore way. Maybe there is little lack of attention to details at some levels, but i guess its fine anyway. Music is pretty good. Cannot call it superb, i heard better soundtracks, but it fits game pretty well. Story getting somewhat awkward at some points, but i like its lighthearted atmosphere . As for replay value there is several characters to play (so far i prefer Carol, cause i found here easier to control) with with different abilities which can change gameplay style a lot. Also "alternative paths" mentioned above will add exploration interest too. So, in conclusion i recommend this game for everyone. Maybe its not will be everyone's favorite but i dont see how can someone dislike it.

Arcade (X-Arcade) joystick control

I know the current generation of gamers really like to play with digital gamepads, but I appreciate the customized keyboard controls, for use with arcade joystick controls (like X-Arcade). Since the switches are all mapped out to the keyboard, I just cleared out the assigned keystrokes and operated my X-Arcade controller to set the buttons and joystick to the corresponding key maps. Since sensitivity can be adjusted as well, the game plays well enough, IMHO, with analog controls. The controller is industry-standard, more or less, so my keyboard doesn't need to take such a beating (and will last longer than most gamepads).

Exactly what I wanted it to be

I was looking for an experience that would take me back to my days playing Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis. I heard about Freedom Planet as I looked around. This game is EVERYTHING I was looking for. It is so much fun, and feels just like the old Sonic games. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good Sonic feel, or for anyone just looking for a good platformer to play.
