I've never played sonic nor particularly undestood it's appeal. I guess now I do. I really enjoyed this game, it's got tight mechanics and it's extremely well polished.
Furthermore, its got great music and graphics which, combined with the gameplay, makes up for a fairly generic story. There are some glitches but they are just annoying and not game-breaking.
The gameplay takes alot of influence from the Genesis era sonic games but with a stronger emphesis on combat. you play as three selectable character each with their own unique abilities that allows different style of platforming and combat for each stage.
the most successful aspect of the game is the level design, each level has it own personality and is varied enough to be fresh and facilitate endless replayability. the nostalgic 16-bit graphics is another high point for the game, taking the player back to similar games like the 90s castle of illusion starring mickey mouse and offcourse sonic the Hedgehog
I do have a minor nitpicks with the game. Some boses, depending on your chosen character, can be quite brutal and the story, despite the decent voice acting, is generic. despite all that, these are minor flaws and don't negatively impact the experience.
in conclusion, freedom planet is fun game I liked playing alot. its creative level design, charming characters, beatiful graphics and catchy soundtrack all offers an exilirating and an unforgettable experience. I am looking forward to the sequel and recommend playing the game whether you are a fan of high-speed platformers or not.
The characters are lovely - quite a little like Sonic the hedgehog but with a lot more extra abilities. I loved the extra long story parts with the very nice voices.
A clear recommendation for Jump'n'Run-Lovers!!
This game took me for surprise because at first I didn't knew that it was a love letter to the Genesis, but after watching a random review on the internet talking about a "Classic Sonic better than Sonic 3 & Knuckles", my favorite Sonic game/s (This was before Sonic Mania was a thing, even tho I still haven't played that game), I knew that I had to play it.
This is not a review, this only open invitation to have a good time with a solid game and excellent interpretation of the games in the Genesis days. The developers are currently working on the sequel and a free demo is available for those that want to join the club of Freedom Planet lovers.
