I was never aware of this game until recently. I decided to try it, since I was on a quest to play all the Adventure Games I could find.
Flight of the Amazon Queen was a great surprise! I honestly didn't expect much... but the story was great, the humor was great, the characters were great... overall, it was a really fun game to play. I was honestly surprised that it wasn't a LucasArts title... as it has a similar style AND the humor is quite the same.
Overall, this one is worth checking out.
My favorite point & click adventure. Played it couple of decades ago and now I'm playing it again, with my kids and they love it! Full of funny scenes, characters and dialogs. It's relatively easy to play, because if you play carefully you'll find hints on what to do next all the time. And if not there are step by step solution on the net. Low res but hand made graphics/animations and lot of spoken dialogs.
I'm not sure if it always is, but when I found this game it was free, and when I saw the screenshots and the style of game I said why not?! Due to it being free I don't think any harsh criticism of this game is necessary but I'll still give my honest opinion of the good and meh parts:
The Good: It's a whimsical point-and-click adventure game that will easily provide 5-10 hours of entertainment. For people like me who grew up with these types of games, it was a nostalgic experience. If you are the kind of person that enjoys games where you can't die and lose all your progress, this game is for you. The puzzle styles are not complicated or advanced and most are pretty obvious, with a few slightly more difficult ones thrown in.
The Meh: The controls are a little clunky so there were a few times I didn't even realize there were other paths or exits or items to pick up. Some of the puzzles were a little TOO simplistic, such as items that I knew I'd need to get and I would assume I'd need to put some things together or distract someone only to find out all I had to do was ask for it. However, as the game went on that seemed to happen less. The main meh thing I would say about the game is that I wasn't super invested in the main character. As someone who has played Kings Quest, Space Quest, Kyrandia, Monkey Island & Thimbleweed Park, I'm used to finding myself cheering for the characters or at least liking them. I felt like Joe King in this game was just ok. He wasn't particularly funny, witty, or likeable.
Overall: I gave this game 4 out of 5 stars because you can't go wrong with a free point and click adventure game. Sure, it's no masterpiece, but it grew on me as the game went on and I'm happy I gave it a try. The fact that I was able to play a nostalgic game like this in 2021 was really fun and I was entertained. Give it a try and give it some time to get going and you'll be glad you did.
Don't get me wrong there with the score, it's definitely better than average.
While I had quite a lot of fun with this game I have to say that it simply lacks in quite a lot of aspects, specifically the puzzles sometimes just having bizzare solutions and there just not being that many possible joke combinations of items.
I'm sorry, but I'm just too used to there being way more interactivity with your items in a Point 'n click game.
But the plot is decent enough, the jokes I liked, I really liked (especially the optional (I think) throw chicken at car moment) and the whole finale definitely made this experience worth my time, while being completely free.
So if you expect a game on par with the greatest point 'n click games of all times, than this probably won't meet your expectations, but it's still a great time.
I found this game to be both fun and enjoyable. When I found this game for free on GOG it was the first time I was playing it, which also makes it one of the first point and click adventures from this era that I am playing.
I feel the plot in the game is a typical cheesy adventure story but it's weighs up by it's almost parody-ish humor and jokes. The voice-acting is a plus since it's very funny and as far as I know it wasn't that common when this game was released.
I give it 4/5 due to it's age and that I found it a bit hard sometimes. It is still playable today and I would probably have paid for it if it wasn't given away for free.
