I wuz robbed!

I have yet to find a decent racing game that doesn't fall victim to the same gameplay flaws over and over. It is like the entire racing genre is defined by these flaws, so I find myself both loving and hating racing games at the same time, and have probably found myself ragequitting to these games more than any other kind of genre. My key gripe with racing games is that they tend to focus on speed and perfection over a very short space of time, and the usual scenario is that even a single mistake can cost you a race, as you can go from first to last place as the result of a single prang, shunt, or poorly-coded physics issue, where as opposed to being able to going really fast the tracks themselves all seem purposely designed to slow you to a crawl. I have played Flatout and Flatout 2, and had the misfortune of playing the sequel before the original, in which many of the above issues are resolved. At least in Flatout, you can improve by crashing into things and destroying the scenery but this is only ever a bonus to placing - you still need to be able to place, and this is done by not crashing and not going Flatout. Thus I rate this as a 3/5, because to be fair, Flatout needs to be reviewed in two different contexts. As a racing game, it is one of the better overall, and would score 4/5, and I hope GoG can snag Flatout 2 on here ASAP. But as a game overall, it only scores 2/5, but then most racing games only score 2/5, because despite all the preamble about going fast, they rarely actually fulfil this as the game develops. Maybe one day...

Crazy Fun.

Flatout, well is Flatout insane. If you enjoy cars fliping across your screen or blowing up into each other, then Flatout is the game for you. The later games have improved game play and user interface. Very fun series.

Make your oponent cry!

In the world of Flatout are no rules. Just you, your vehicle, some other cars and the track. Your ally is physics. You can destroy almost everyone object you see. But not only you. Physics is an ally of uncertain temper. If it wants to make you cry, it will. What are you hesitate? Just do it - buy Flatout and show the world that there is no one who is better than you are!

Pure skill thrill

On normal handling, there is nothing special about this game. On professional this is an incredible racer. Great physics which see fences, signs, barrels and tires scattering around and under your car; excellent car deformation; and realistic handling. Flatout provides an exhilarating and fun challenge, and on professional handling, it IS a challenge. It's the sort of racing game where you'll instinctively be micro-adjusting your acceleration, braking and turning on every single turn; pressing and releasing multiple buttons many times in the space of a second. That's how you know you've got a quality physics system to work with. The effort isn't wasted on your playthrough either. There are five different types of race (track, town, sandpit, woodland and ice) and while the tracks do recycle and reverse a lot of areas and turns, they're immaculately put together. Combined with the physics and handling; where you'll have to be planning your driving for the next turn or chicane ahead of time, you'll find every new race a new challenge in having to calculate the best line as you try to powerslide seamlessly to the finish line before your aggressive AI competitors. There are bonus fun challenges for distraction, as well as an upgrades system based on your cash winnings, but it's all secondary to the incredibly weighty and realistic handling which will see you spinning-out, and flying through your windshield until you master it.

Challenging, fun racing game

FlatOut is a pretty challenging racing game which can be both frustrating and fun at the same time. It's frustrating when you hit something invisible and see your driver launched through the wind shield, and it's so much fun when, well, all other times, pretty much. The game doesn't have too many tracks, but the ones it has have been very well designed and look great. The game's soundtrack is great, the graphics are quite good and, overall, the presentation is excellent. One of the game's strong suits in my opinion. Gameplay is good, but there's not too much depth to it. As a whole, it's very well made. If you are interested in a racing game that's NOT geared towards following the perfect line through a corner, or trying to prevent any damage to your car, this might be worth getting. As I write this, the game goes for $1.49, so unless the premise doesn't sound appealing to you at all, this is a steal, and that's a huge understatement. There's almost no excuse for not picking it up!
