Too jank.

This is one of those games that's relies on it's physics. Physics which seem to decide they don't work anymore right when you need them to work the most. The gameplay loop is essentailly grinding money to buy/upgrade a better car. But you get nothing if you don't make the top 3 and the "bonus" points you score for environment destruction are only like $20. You can look forward to being in first place and then suddenly, a small object in the road and get stuck on a road cone and then lose. All risk; no reward. Why bother?

Great fun if you don't care to win

3/5 -- conditionally enjoyable The game is a pure racer. No story, no visual customization, no nonsense. There is tuning, so it's not THAT bare bones. The races are "demolition derby style", although in fact it's just a Finnish national sport of rally cross with beat up cars. The tracks are dirt or mixed dirt+asphalt, always quite bumpy. They are usually littered with obstacles, ranging from simple cones to excavators. Collisions with those objects produce different results, but usually negative, although apparently it also gives you nitrous. The graphics look nice, it aged well. The handling is simple, but challenging. Destruction model is superb (not realistic, but very satisfying). The main downside of this game is that if you actually want to race and win, the game is too random. All the bumps and obstacles can easily destabilize your car. The AI is aggressive and reckless. The game is not designed for clean races, it is designed for smashing cars. And that, although a great fun, is a special kind of fun. You need to be in a mood for it. Or be a kid. Smashing cars is always fun when you're kid.

FlatOut - The Ultimate Destruction

When I'm looking back at the times before Flatout all the racing games were pretty the same stereotype. Series like NFS did a good job, but there was something missing - destruction, damage and the right feelling when you're driving a big, heavy, 8V american car. FlatOut brings all the things we like on the rednecks comedies like Dukes of Hazard or any older action movies from the 80s. It's really fun and challenge to drive these cars, in the wild, with all the fyzics effects and stunning control of the car. You can't compare this game to any other serie or single title. There were videogames before FlatOut and there are other games after FlatOut. But FlatOut is only one. It created its own genre. It's my favourite racing game.

Good ideas very badly executed

Triple roll over in the air because of slightly touching a curbside at mid speed? Sure! Flying 30m out of the windshield because of slightly hitting your door/side at a rail? Of course! The graphics are nice, the music is good, the execution is a mess. Of course it's different from FlatOut 2, the physics seem more realistic at first and make the game harder, why not? Seems legit, you simply use the brakes a little more and don't push the pedal too hard. After a while I constantly got situations like mentioned above and thanks to the weird collision query that surrounds a thin lamp post with a thick invisible tree which you still hit when you aren't rouching the post at all, things like this happen a lot. The controls are the next problem. It is not possible to use the right analog stick for acceleration and brakes, so you have to rely on buttons for this which practically results in feet of lead always instantaniously kicking through the irons when pressed. I usually don't quit games before I finished them, but after buying a very expensive car, upgrading it a lot and being halfway through the gold cup I deleted the game because the problems with controls and physics. The AI...the distance between the first few places and the rest is usually huge. Use nitro for preventing far slides out of corners, if you use it for more speed you'll end up crashing and flying very far because of the many hills placed right before MANY tight corners in the tracks...

Almost unplayable

The cars are very hard to control, skidding all the time. On top of that the computer-controlled cars will not hesitate to crash into your car while you are already struggling to follow the road, making things worse. The ragdoll "feature" when you crash into a tree is infuriating. Get Flatout 2 instead, it’s much better!
