Challenging, fun racing game

FlatOut is a pretty challenging racing game which can be both frustrating and fun at the same time. It's frustrating when you hit something invisible and see your driver launched through the wind shield, and it's so much fun when, well, all other times, pretty much. The game doesn't have too many tracks, but the ones it has have been very well designed and look great. The game's soundtrack is great, the graphics are quite good and, overall, the presentation is excellent. One of the game's strong suits in my opinion. Gameplay is good, but there's not too much depth to it. As a whole, it's very well made. If you are interested in a racing game that's NOT geared towards following the perfect line through a corner, or trying to prevent any damage to your car, this might be worth getting. As I write this, the game goes for $1.49, so unless the premise doesn't sound appealing to you at all, this is a steal, and that's a huge understatement. There's almost no excuse for not picking it up!

More racing games for Linux! :)

Not all works out of the box on Gentoo. There is a issue with sound but is ease to fix, simple remove FlatOut/wine_standalone/lib/i386-linux-gnu/alsa-lib and make sure that app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs if sound deson't works for you out of the box on amd64 architecture. Works like a charm on mobile i5 with integrated HD 4000 GPU (even on FHD). Flatout is not TOCA Race drive, but is DRM free and works without required CD inside your drive all the time when you want play.

Fun

I bought this game around 2005. And boy, what a game it was. I remember seeing the guy flying through windshield at the cover art and was thinking could it actually happen in real life. And will it happen in this game. It did. Then I looked at the back of the disc box where I saw some screenshots and was surprised by the damage model and wondered if it was like that in the game. It was even better. This game came out in 2004, but it offered so much complex graphical options (for its age), like anisotropic texture filtering or even the anti aliasing. It looked beautiful, and most importantly, it was fun. So much fun. You could do whatever the hell you want. Even if you had the slowest car, are the worst driver, if you know how to crash into other people, you could win. And crashing is fun, since the damage model was the best since then, it looked realistic, but is not. And the mini games. Shoot your guy in the air, crash into other cars and be the last surviving... Should be its own game. Get the game if you like mayhem, and don't mind ages.

Almost five stars, broken multiplayer

For single-player users, this game if Fun with a capital F. This game gets the fun of computer racing pitch-perfect! Driving around varied tracks, adjusting for steering and sliding as your car gets knackered, watching your engine burst into flames . . . this game sucks you in and makes you want to play another track! The FOv2 for GOG mod is recommended. The v2 game is still basically stock, but there are some graphical tweaks and bug fixes that are worthwhile. Unfortunately, multiplayer for this game game doesn't work on modern versions of Windows. I have Windows 8.1 64 bit, he has Windows 10 64 bit. For both of us, trying to host or join a multiplayer game just crashes the program completely. We've tried the recommended fixes: fov2 plus FlatOutNet still has exactly the same problem. Since we can't use this game for multiplayer, minus 1 star. However, this game is still highly recommended for single-player use!

Rally-like arcade for embeded videocard

The biggest plus is that it runs smooth on notebook with embeded Intel card (detected as 4600 or smth) I've passed the Bronze by now (9/36 races) - the asphalt tracks are easiest and most predictable. After some practice/upgrades 1st track is just 1000$ prize for 4 minutes racing. - there is defenetely some catch-up - you won't lose too much crashing as team will slow down while you restart, and there would be always one car trying to keep close if you are leading to make your nervous enough - car selection does matter. 1st car sucks, while selecting other one make me pass bronze with only few replays. so chose wise. - once you pass bronze you have to buy new silver car as you upgraded bolid sucks. so you probably don't need all the upgrades but better keep the money. good news is that silver car is allowed to race a bronze race, making easy money - bonus stunt events sucks to me, as it's not about the racing. but try it once to see if it make fun to you. to sum up: somethere between Juiced and Colin Mcrae Rally. Must buy on Sale. ('Loosing is fun' style) p.s. using 'Normal' handling + Auto.
