Fun for an hour or two then not any more

The game looks decent for its age and has a nice soundtrack (although after a few repetitions it becomes quite obvious why those bands didn't get to make a world-wide career). It is a racing game but it's nowhere near a decent one. True, the environment has many destructible objects (no, it's not that the whole world is destructible) but the tracks are made so that you inevitably do destroy those objects - because it's so natural that there are trucks, concrete silos and other objects scattered all over racing tracks - don't you watch rallies and F1? The "physics" model is even worse than in Grid so it's telling something. The "AI" cars will happily crash into you and spin you out or push you into obstacles. You won't really be able to do the same to them. There is a huge amount of rubberbanding. And don't even get me started on "return to track". You lose so much ground and positions with this. It might be fun for an hour or two but then quickly just gets frustrating and annoying.

Fun but you better have tons of patience

Issues that tested my patience. -Front of the car suddenly getting stuck on something and reverse taking ages to get it out, or making the car spin over and over, like an involuntary awful donut. -Reset is downright broken, don't rely on it. If you crash you can spam that key as much as you like but it'll only feel like putting your car back on track after precious seconds later. It's even worse if you wanna reset but haven't gotten a proper "crash cam" yet (say, you drove off track and, while managing to keep the car steady, you're going fast). And the worst part, the reset can send you REALLY back, and if you press it again 'cause you were desperate spamming the key trying to get back, after hitting it again after the reset, it can even send you FURTHER back. -The off track penalty is bipolar. You can either find really useful shortcuts or drive the wrong centimeter off and get told to reset. -Sometimes you can crash through a sign or a door and keep driving but if you drive through a small barrel or 2 piled tires then that'll be enough to send you to brazil or wreck your car. It also makes the nitro system inconsistent 'cause strong crashes sometimes give nothing but running over small cones can straight up fill your bar. Am I driving a heavy american car or a twingo? I get that the appeal is haha funny crashes but the novelty wears thin when you want to get that 1st place, and to do so, you have to go slow, which feels kinda cursed for a racing game. I get trying to get a hold of the car but that's one thing, and cheesing gold cup by just...going a bit slower is a different thing. All in all it is fun when things go well, but man it can get frustrating. The bonus events are fun tho! And it is entertaining when the CPU ends itself and you get 1st row seat to watch it. It is a bit sad none of the tuning modifications change the visuals of the car but that's a nitpick. Get it for free or on a sale and if you REALLY want another old arcade racing game.

Retro racing fun

Great game, ahead of its time physics wise, serious racing with the right amount of sillyness sprinkled in. Controls needed some tweaking on controller but thats easily done. Should be part of any retro game collection

A pretty good game!

I'm not a fan of racing game but this one is the only one i liked so far! First, The bonus mini-games feature is just hilarious and fun. Perfect to play with friends in a party. Second, the off-roads style track are pretty well designer and fun to play. And Third, the cars are fakes so there is no "car constructor" involved in the production of this game which means that you can totally destroy your cars and THAT is a feature that is missing in most of racing game these days! This game is simply a must have! :)

Like racing and destruction?

This game is for you. Flatout has pretty good car detail in terms of damage. Wherever you scrape an opponent or wall, a dent appears. As the race goes on and you bump into more people, your car will literally start falling to pieces if you abuse it too much. The race courses are a tad bland, but still good nonetheless. The mini-games are fun as well, although you may have a tough time figuring out how to play them correctly. As for the cars, they provide a very wide range, including upgrades as well.
