Did you ever want to reroute power to the shields, set phasers to stun,
or even eject the warp core? Well, now you can! In FTL, you experience the
atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a
dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with
multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down
your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape,
power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the
fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation
roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure
through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.
FTL's complex strategic gameplay allows you to give orders to your crew,
manage ship power distribution, and choose weapon targets in the heat of
battle. You will encounter unique alien lifeforms and technology. You can
upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien
races. Be the Captain you want: hundreds of text based encounters will
force you to make tough decisions. In the randomized galaxy each
play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your
decisions. Each time you play another challenging session of FTL: Faster Than Light, it won't be quite the same.
Unlimited adventures in the vast depths of unpredictable space.
A new randomized galaxy to explore each time you start a new game.
Quick play sessions (from 5 to about 90 minutes) will allow you to add that spaceship commander feeling to any of your days.
This game was a really pleasant surprise. It is addicting, fun, and brutally challenging (if you want it to be). For such a low price, I cannot recommend it enough.
There is so many good reviews already. I'll just add that this is an addicting little game. Not expensive not heavy but crazy good. Just buy it. MUST HAVE.
In FTL you are the captain of star ship navigating the cosmos on a harrowing journey to escape “the rebels”. You manage your ship, fortify your crew, and fight enemies. It is a concept that is enjoyable to indulge in but there isn’t much to this game to keep me playing. It is a good little game for a few dollars.
I admit I am biased. I am not a rogue lite fan or a fan RNG. I understand the merits of it. The rouge lite allows for the feel of a classic quarter muncher, and the RNG attempts at variety. The preceding merits leave rogue-lites lacking in narrative depth and actively deters vested interest.
Sure, some might say its hard...once you get to the later levels, use the advanced features and want to win.
But to me it's a good relaxation game for those times when I don't want to get involved.
The basics are easy to catch on, the soundtrack does the trick as does the interface, more then enough variation of gameplay from one game to the other if only thanks to the wide selection of ships...
A wonderfull little game, especially if you get it on sale.
Faster Than Light is a fun game. Its also very punishing. I'll go over its faults first.
-the soundtrack is pretty good in most cases, but kind of falls flat on most areas. for example, you'll hear the main menu theme a lot between runs, and its ok at first, but its not just that it might et old, its actually just bad.
-the difficulty is an awesome challenge, but if you're looking to have fun first, so you can enjoy the game when you want it to be more difficult later, I reccomend playing easy mode, which should really be called normal mode.
The good things
-like I mentioned before, the soundtrack can be very good in some places, very enjoyable.
-sound design is also very good, you can understand a lot of whats going on by listening, and the sounds aren't grating.
-The art style is very consistent, pixel art with a rigid pallette throughout, no complaints about the art here.
-Gameplay, while difficult, is also pretty fun. 'addicting' is a pretty negative word, so I think 'enjoyable to return to' is how it could be described.
-if you like achievements, but don't like using launchers, you can rest easy. In game achievements are accessible through the stats menu on the title screen.
Advanced edition adds a lot more variety, but isn't a massive overhaul, nor does it need to be.
Just make sure if you'd like to see the new content, you enable it on the ship screen.
