Description
Explore, fight, survive and unravel mysteries in this unique and unforgiving 3D isometric RPG set in an original dark, low fantasy world. Exanima's exceptional attention to detail and realistic simulation of all things aim to provide a deeply immersive and dynamic gameplay experience.

This game features a very deep, truly physics based combat system. This is not just some animation feature, it is a fundamental difference that is central to gameplay. Real momentum, forces and collisions are always at play here, every nuance of your inputs is crucial to the outcome. This will likely be unlike anything you've played before and may take some practice, but can be hugely rewarding and the skill cap is virtually infinite. It is not particularly fast paced or difficult but it does require you to pay attention, it is very tactical and just casually pressing buttons won't get you very far!
  • A deep skill based combat system
  • Complex and smart AI
  • Fully interactive environments
  • An advanced damage model with accurate collisions and locational protection
  • Roguelike elements
  • Arena mode to hone your combat skills.

One in a million...

So I've been gaming actively now for at least 20 years. I've probably played several thousand different games - heck, I currently own over 3000. What does this have to do with Exanima? Let's just say that Exanima, even in it's current state comes out on top for me. The same goes for the developers. I know talent and quality over quantity when I see it. This game, and its developers just tick literally ALL the boxes for me. Let's talk about something we all know about the game. Its development time. Yeah, it takes them a while to release an update. That's their quality over quantity right there. You can't expect them, with a tiny team and such high standards, to constantly blast out updates. While the content itself is lacking when looking at a yearly basis, the quality is not. The game is extremely well-optimised, looks amazing for its total file size and is technically impressive with its physics-based combat and exploration. Anyone who knows anything about game development should also know that it's very hard work creating an engine from scratch, let alone by just one person - which is the case here. Now I'm not going to get into the actual gameplay as I don't wish to spoil anything, no matter how small. I do have several hundred hours logged already(on Steam) and bought a GOG version just to give additional support to the developers. Out of all the games out there, this one deserves to succeed. One thing I can say is that the game asks for patience and a strong will. If you don't have one or both of these, the game can help you train them. Playing this game doesn't just make you a better player - it makes you a better person. It strengthens you psychologically, if you stick with it. Most games these days just make you weaker. Hold your hand. Reward you without reason. That doesn't happen here. I'm not the best writer of reviews, but I couldn't just pass on one for this game. Quality is high, and the game is only going to get better and more content over time.

Difficult, but Rewarding and Engaging!

I purchased this because it looked like a proper successor to the original Diablo. I was not disappointed. This game is an excellent dungeon crawler. It is not for the faint of heart, or those who shy away from challenge. The game is difficult, brutal, requires some practice to get going--but is always fair. Melee combat is gripping, sophisticated, and challenging. You will be interested in every fight, no matter how "remedial" your opponent may seem. The atmosphere is fantastic, the game looks good, and runs extremely well even on the highest settings. Very stable. I have yet to experience a bug--on early access! There are some negatives. Again, learning curve. You might not be up to it--but an evening of being slaughter in the practice arena should be sufficient. Early access. Even the good features do require polish, and many features are not yet enabled--chiefly spell casting and ranged combat. The music could use some help. While the minimalist tones aid the tense isolation of being alone in a dungeon, I would prefer a more engaging score. That being said, it's an excellent game. I eagerly await the completion of it's ultimate goal, Sui Generis.

Love and Hate

I realy love the atmosphere of this game. It captures the gritty malign nature of dungeons perfectyl, they scare us and still drive us to dwell deeper and deeper - like old school rpgs (like eye of the beholder) or Diablo (1!) did back in the day. However the most unique thing in the game, the physics based combat, is also the thing i struggle the most with and totaly devalues the game for me.

Great game, worth the buy!

I've been playing Exanima for a few years now and I still haven't found a game that comes even close to the adrenaline rush I get when playing this. Exanima has truely become a wonderfull game with a great experience when playing it, a bit tough at first but that's just the game not holding your hand or pulling any punches. Updates were slow at first, that was just them hard at work, but are much more frequent now with a weekly forum post on there website informing everyone on the games development. In the end I have found many hours of great fun while playing this game. I couldn't recomend this game more highly then I already do. Enjoy
