Description
Explore, fight, survive and unravel mysteries in this unique and unforgiving 3D isometric RPG set in an original dark, low fantasy world. Exanima's exceptional attention to detail and realistic simulation of all things aim to provide a deeply immersive and dynamic gameplay experience.

This game features a very deep, truly physics based combat system. This is not just some animation feature, it is a fundamental difference that is central to gameplay. Real momentum, forces and collisions are always at play here, every nuance of your inputs is crucial to the outcome. This will likely be unlike anything you've played before and may take some practice, but can be hugely rewarding and the skill cap is virtually infinite. It is not particularly fast paced or difficult but it does require you to pay attention, it is very tactical and just casually pressing buttons won't get you very far!
  • A deep skill based combat system
  • Complex and smart AI
  • Fully interactive environments
  • An advanced damage model with accurate collisions and locational protection
  • Roguelike elements
  • Arena mode to hone your combat skills.

It's really bad...

Character controls like he has severe mental issues. Movement is weird and counterintuitive. Combat is exremely unresponsive and unfun. 75% of the time when you hit the attack button the character doesn't feel like doing it so he just stand there like he forgot how to move his arm. The physics and inventory systems are interesting and seems like it could be fun if the gameplay wasn't garbage. Oh, and the game crashes constantly.

Nothing Kan Prepare You!

XA=Exanima NOTHING KAN PREPARE YOU You are witness to the footnote to possibly the finest open world, fantasy RPG of all time, Sui Generis! Set in a dark, forgotten complex full of unknowable danger. It's all about survival and discovery. There are numerous paths and halls to explore and get lost in and plenty of caches to plunder. However, NPCs and the environment itself are not simply fabricated elements for our enjoyment. As XA is highly non-player centric, they have motivations beyond "kill player." As an initiate, you must feel your way to get your bearings. Petulance and impatience are swiftly and consistently punished with failure. XA simply demands respect. The combat is brutal and incredibly satisfying! Mishaps can lead to decisive or fatal outcomes. While offense currently consists of only four attacks, physics allow for excess in the control of actors. Footwork—as in martial arts—is a major aspect of combat and it affects melee massively. Rigid steps are used to simulate balance, maintain distancing, and/or create additional momentum for strikes. This movement has 360° of freedom and may follow linear or curved paths depending on your direction. Personalization isn't new, but preferred equipment plays a phenomenally massive role in the development of each player's style. All equippment affects the physics. Surfaces, bodies, and objects have accurate collision. Bodies have anatomic vital points. Attacks can pass gaps in armor. Blades cut all along their surface. Blunt forces with appropriate momentum can penetrate armor. Attacks can glance. Etc. In conclusion, XA is a revolution against mediocrity, and it's as elegant as it is rough around the edges. Unprecedented, emergent gameplay through highly dynamic interactions with NPCs is Bare Mettle's unicorn. Still, what XA currently offers is nothing short of orgasmic! Arena and brutal combat gives it a hardcore edge, and refining one's form and the art of slaughter can become a game in and of itself!

Whatever does....

This is literally the worst attempt for an action role playing game I ever met. The game or producers try meticulously to focus and emphasize on its specially physics based controls, which would let this game stand out from others. It just does NOT. The controls are awkward and not properly done. In fact, somehwere in the code seems to work some animation based on a physics functions, but you will need a lot more to make this work as a playable game. Even Ultima Underworld was more accessible and physically accurate, than this acceleration and impact force emulator. Hell no. Please try different stuff, but make it worthwhile.

Good game, Great potential

First of lets get this out of the way. Yes I made this account just now, and I haven't even bought the game on GoG. Before you try to have me hanged, just know that I have been following Exanima and Sui Generis ever since its kickstarter back in 2012. I have probably played over 100 hours of Exanima in total since then. Exanima's combat is its main strength once you get used to it, but a source of frustration at the beginning. It feels unfair, it feels clunky, and just outright foreign. Its unlike anything I've previously experienced, and it is this fact which have made me love it in time. Because as you play you start to understand that every mistake you make is your own, not the game. You start to understand that the physics based combat comes with a huge emphasis on player skill, and it is pretty great when you learn it. The combat becomes a lot of fun once you get used to it, but that means you have to get past the initial weirdness and frustration of it. If you are someone that does not have the patience for such, i suggest you go looking for an easier game. The dungeon crawl experience is tense and mysterious, looking for clues as to what this place is and why you are there in the first place (Your character having seemingly lost his memory). The story so far is delivered through the environment and scrolls scattered around, where you have to piece together the story yourself. The story seems to be an interesting one, but the way it is presented isn't a very fun one. There are no npc's (yet) or any form of dialog (yet), which makes for dull story telling. These things are supposed to be added in the future. The dungeon is pretty large as of now, and supposed to get larger. There are no maps yet, so the player has to find everything on his own. Another point of frustration for me, as you so easily get lost. You will find yourself getting lost and walking in circles quite often, take that as you will. All in all a Good game, with potential for greatness.
