Idk what any tryhards and purists say this game, when its not having graphical issues for me, is so much fun. I LOVE the soundtrack, the voice acting and just the vibe of the game. For me its hitting at a good time in my life when I want some nice fun chill laid back rts action. This game has it. Don't believe the hardcores that poop on this game. This is great and deserves more love to polish up its old game tech problems. There is gold here you just gotta wanna see it. 10/10
So standing on its own without any prior knowledge of the previous games this game would probably be enjoyable, though compared to others of its type its probably sub-par at best.
I'm not sure if the team that designed the original game had ANY hand whatsoever in this. Its TOTALLY different, and many of the changes that have been made are very poor. And the game is definitely buggy and unpolished.
The ships stutter across the water and have horrid turn rates, builders will get stuck on the walls they build(units CAN mount walls which is cool...but its a useless feature), building placement, especially for towers, is lachrymose and janky at best. pathfinding is horrid...siege engines dont fit through gates in walls...I could go on.
This games only redeeming feature, which I got a kick out of, is the unit dialogue. They really raised the anty and made things campy with this one. For example, the Western "factions" "ancient era" builders dialogue.
-Me builder. Me build.
-WORST place to build....BUUT i build.
-MMM...WOOD smell GOOOOD
-I BRNG round spinny thing with sharp edge!
-Sorry...just drill hole in hand...ouch.
-I like tooools.
Between this and several of the other units corny and constant dialogue I got enough of a laugh to push through at least a couple hours before the rough, campy, janky nature was just too much to handle.
If you like campy, simple games, maybe you'll get as much a kick form this one as I did.
Firstly, I am mostly unaffected by the nostalgia of the first two games like most of the reviews here are, I only played the demo of Empire Earth when it released on our country local magazine nag.co.za and I remember liking the demo.
My major complain with this game is performance, the FPS drops are hard when setting the graphics to the quality preset, even on my moderate high-end system (i7 870 OC'ed to stable 3.9Ghz and Radeon RX 480). This game only runs on a single CPU thread/core, but I can atleast say the performance in the campaign is generally better than in the 2nd & 3rd tutorials.
Then on Graphics, from an eagle eye view the graphics is overall pretty good on quality mode with Anti-Aliasing also enabled. What I prefer in this game over Age of Empires 3 is the blood spray/spatter, it makes the war feel more real than AOE3, and there are some cool graphical effects like sand-storms in North-Africa, and Europe has like rain and thunder. Texture detail also looks good on the Quality Preset, the only graphics that look average are character shadows and the character models are a bit more fantasy than realistic, almost WarCraft3-like.
I find the voice acting pretty entertaining although repetitive when traveling large areas of the map.
In conclusion, don't be shy to purchase it on sale, the developers did try something unique and it is worth trying, although performance does get frustrating. I am considering to pay EE1 & EE2 earth on this 66% sale as well.
The review title refers to the series chronology. Empire Earth is the better brother, EE2 is still good and EE3 is BAD. I mean - really BAAAD. One of the worst RTS games in the universe. It was ripped of the best things in the EE series (multiple civilizations, ages, variety of options) to minimum.
What is left is bullcrap. Crap that stinks. I would not recommend it to anyone, except you are that kind of person who MUST have all of the games in EVERY series (like me) - buy it. Enjoy your wasted money.
The worst game on gog.com, no doubt.
The first EE was a burst of wonder when released and still is for my money ... but when I bought this version when it came out disappointment was not even close to how I felt . Very much the worst of the series .. The first being the best .
