Not so old, and not so good also

well, i have this game boxed, I remember i bought it without trying any demo before, bad idea as usual. I bought it cause i liked the first Empire Earth (that imo is surely still a lot better even if not perfect, and another game at the end), and as i missed the second chapter i felt it was the time to get something fresh. Considering i liked the first EE i was a bit disappointed to see this is basically another game, very different under nealry all the aspects, but yes it is an RTS too at least. One of the most interesting things of EE was the "old style" RTS concept, so building load of structures, big armies, many improvements, collecting resources etc, with quite customizable and big random maps resulting in long games. Being different from the RTS trend that was going to rush-games with little maps and no buildings/resources EE in my opinion conquered a specific spot as RTS. EE III lost this "old style" aspect going to uniform to the others fast-peace RTS with little maps, prolly presuming it was welecome as idea as the goal here is not playing 1 single map but conquering sectors in "risiko style", but the result imo lacks in fun, strategy, depth, under every point of view you could try to have to give a chance to this game. Besdie the not so good first impact i got into the game a little, but i have to tell even if most of the new concepts were interesting as ideas, the game is no more then average under all the aspects, also the 3d engine, the graphics and animations were not shining surely, you can feel some kind of "bad insipration" for every game detail that you could notice. Personally i dont see in this title anything really good, and also i dont consider it old tellin true, yes that can be relative, but Carrier command or Dungeon master are old, this one well... for me this is a below average recent game, not an old good game.

Nice ideas, terrible work

I own a box copy, and boy, the bugs I've encountered. Building units, but not having them appear. Surrendering a battle by withdrawing your army, which results in your army being destroyed, but the battle won. Ships that don't move across the screen, but stutter from place to place, not due to framerate issues, that's simply how it works. It is a shame, because I really do like some of the ideas in here. I was a fan of EE1, but not EE2. I liked the idea of having 3 sides that were completely different, instead of 20-something civs with one unique unit each. And the world-domination campaign would actually work for this game. You conquer several provinces with your tribes, and by the time you're bored with that style of fighting, it's time to tech up and fight with all new units. They put quite some ideas of bonuses you can pay for on the world map. Unfortunately, someone forgot to playtest this. The AI is poor on the battle map. On island-maps, once you conquer a province, it's yours forever. Invading AI armies generally need 10 minutes to figure out how to unload the troops on an island. By then, you have enough units ready to wipe them out before they can even begin building their base. You could even try to sink those transports before they unload, but that's unlikely. Ship sight range and turn speed are so low, a moving enemy is generally out of sight before your ship can get a shot of, and your units instantly stop their attack orders once an enemy leaves sight. Things get worse on the world map. You have a whole list of upgrades, but hardly any are usefull enough to justify their cost, when compared with spending your few recourses to buy a few more armies and steamroling the enemy. Worse, the enemy has very low priority on advancing to the next age. If you have a lead of 1 age, you have an advantage. If you have a lead of 2, you generally don't need to build a base anymore. Just the escort guards that you start the mission with can wipe out the entire enemy army and base, if you play your cards right. And the AI has no problem letting you get to the last age without aging up at all (or maybe once, to the middle ages) All my campaigns have ended with me using lightning-shooting gunships, invisible hovercrafts, supertanks and blackhole-creating robots against empires who fight back with bows for the last 15 battles, and that gets boring really fast. The only times I ever went up against gun-wielding enemies in the campaign was either during the special scripted missions, where an appropriate enemy spawns for you, or when I didn't pay attention, and the enemy captured a few of my units with monks. I've went and played it for some time anyway, and each time I'm again disapointed with how poorly this product was supported. With a few decent patches, the basis of this game would have made me love it. But they put out one launch-day patch, and then stopped paying attention. Such a pity.

Unfairly reviewed in my opinion.

While this is certainly the weakest of the Empire Earth series I for one think all the one star rating are unfair. It is a fairly solid RTS with an interesting world conquest aspect. While it certainly is not on par with the excellent Rise of Nations I is an decent time waster. Until we see Rise of Nations and it's expansion here or on steam I say give it a shot if you see it on sale.

not-so-good old game

Empire Earth III is interesting mix of good ideas and bad ideas. Turn based colonization of provinces (borrowed from other games) and real time fight on smaller maps looks like good idea, but realization is very poor. I was trying to start in England location, only to find, that my neighbors are Kiowa. Kiowa? In the England? Also, like good idea seemed funny responses of units, in other games are implemented too (i.e. Warcraft/Starcraft, Majesty). Problem is that units have no normal responses, only those "funny" ones ... and hearing the same line 15times in row is not funny anymore. About game itself: Graphics is nice, even if it seems little bit to inspired by Warcraft. Units have similar effects, like in previous installments, but their pathfinding is horrible. Don't send fast and slow units, you are invoking defeat in details. Overall feeling from playing: Much worse than EE1 and EE2.

From a non-fan boy

I've never played the other Empire Earth games. I've heard they're great and look forward to buying them eventually. However, it seems that since I didn't play the others 2, I haven't played this game with any preconceptions from earlier titles. As far as the strategy goes, the game was quite fun, offering many ways to out-think your opponents, especially in a global game. I particularly like the factions system that they had (as it always struck me as odd that countries like Germany and France were "separate factions" usually, despite the almost parallel philosophies). The factions are broken into 3 major philosophical and ethnic groups: West, Middle-East, and Far-East. I have yet to buy this from gog.com, but have been contemplating it since my "out of the box" edition doesn't work on anything later than Windows XP (it glitches and crashes on vista and won't start on anything higher).
