It pains me to say it but this is by far the worst entry in the Empire Earth series. I actually bought it back in the day on a DVD, got it on GOG some time ago to see if the game is as bad as I remember it... Yes, it is. It always is bad, don't get.
This game blocks everything from the OS. Won't allow alt tabbing, won't even allow task manager up. Windows+D brings the desktop up for a moment before the game takes over again and demands you to shut down, same with task manager. It's one thing to play nicely, I've seen games which just break when it loses window focus, it's another to do work arounds to block the OS and and force the game to be in charge.
I was a fan of the Empire Earth series and discovered EE3, Unfortunately I didn't read the reviews and installed the game on my laptop. What I found was terrible, Instead of multiple resources or even the changing special resources for each epoch in EE2, We only have 3 resources, gold, raw materials and tech points. Tech points are used for well teching up and raw material and gold used for your standard affair of building your base and units, This may sound good right up until the point you're making mechs with your only income for raw materials are wood or fish.
The dialog is by far the worst part of the game, It tries to be funny but fails miserably and only annoys you to the point of killing a beloved family pet, Thank goodness you can mute it.
The AI is incredibly stupid and your own units pathfinding is even worse.
Also there's only 3 factions. The technologically advanced west, The mobile middle east and the numerous far east, Instead of the multiple factions and cultures with different benefits in EE2 or EE1, It comes of that they're trying to imitate starcraft and appeal to a wider audience but only alienate their current fans and at the same time doesn't appeal to anyone. It's an extremely dumbed down RTS to the point of being insulting, This is not a good buy for anyone not even diehard fans, just buy EE1 or EE2 and avoid this game and save yourself some money.
... when comparing EE3 to its direct predecessors, also the worst rts I've ever experienced. It still blows my mind how an otherwise competent developer like Mad Doc Studios got the idea that producing something like that - horrible balancing and performance and cringeworthy 'humour' attempts - would please anyone.
The reviews are right: This game is really not good. But its solid.
The humor (units say stupid stuff sometimes) can be cringe at times- and it really is totally far from the Empire Earth name - but dont be fooled: There is some value to it. The conquer-mode is fun, you have a solid classic RTS experience and is not even ugly (!). The visuals can be charming - but more on a generic way.
In 2023 this game feels actually quite better. But even back then i had some good fun with it - while constantly checking the box to make sure its an EE-Game. This game really wanted to be fun and edgy and totally missed his core audience.
If you are done with most classic RTS and just need something not too deep but still solid and fun - honestly, go for it.
