DUSK reintroduces you to a world where butchery and bloodshed must be mastered... if you're to survive 'til dawn. Inspired by Doom, Quake, Blood, Heretic, Hexen, Half-Life, Redneck Rampage and all your '90s favorites, while featuring a soundtrack by metal music mastermind Andrew Hulshult.
In three distinct campaign episodes hand-crafted from straight outta the '90s, players will battle through an onslaught of mystical backwater cultists, possessed militants and even darker forces and attempt to discover just what lurks beneath the Earth. Featuring a vast arsenal of badass weaponry including sickles, swords, crossbows, rifles, dual-wielded and double barreled shotguns and incredibly necessary grenade and rocket launchers, DUSK brings unapologetic retro action from start to finish.
In addition to the main campaign, DUSK features an Endless Survival Mode, putting you front and center against wave after wave of merciless enemies.
And for those looking for an extra challenge, DUSK also offers the chance to go head to head online to battle your friends in DUSKWorld arena multiplayer, where darkness hosts the worst of humanity in surprising new ways...
DUSK features cross-play multiplayer and the exclusive THE GOGATIORUM map for endless mode.
If you enjoyed any of the Unreal games, the Quakes or anything in that nature , then this game is a must own for you...the only problem I have is that the online mode is dead...not like "100 or 200 people playing" dead..I mean actual "0 players on all servers" dead.
This game runs perfect on a gtx 970, i7 4790, 8gb ram
If you play FPS games, you should at least try this game..If I were you I would buy it on sale.
When most people think of 'retro-modern boomer shooters' they think of the Neo Trinity: Ion Fury, Amid Evil, and Dusk. Dusk is not my favourite of the three (that honour goes to Ion Fury) but, admittedly, only because I played Ion Fury first. (Trivial, I know.) Of the Trinity I would say that Dusk is the hardest but it is the only one that offers multiplayer support.
It has the visuals of someone trying to code Quake using a modern PC. While some may find the visual styling to be...unique, it does help to call back to Quake and Quake-like titles and how they played. Circle-strafing, bunny-hopping, in-fighting and rapid weapon switching are the norm for Dusk much as they were for it's ancestor/donor titles. The enemies run the gambit from soldiers to cultists to cyborgs...and even cryptids! The enemies demand respect - to do otherwise will have you staring at the 'Game Over' screen.
Story? Okay...you are a treasure hunter who was captured by evil forces while rummaging around the town of Dusk. They pinned you to a pair of meat hooks to die but you instead pull yourself free and use said hooks to kill your captors. What comes next is a 10-hour blood-fueled, acid-tripped, extra-dimensional revenge epic.
All of this is held together with a soundtrack that, in my opinion, turned Andrew Hulschult from a known quality producer to a name on every gamer's tongue that played this game. (The soundtrack is so good that I purchased it from Bandcamp!) This along with the Amid Evil Soundtrack is probably why Hulschult was chosen by id to compose the Doom Eternal DLC soundtracks.
I cannot recommend this game enough to FPS veterans looking for a blast from the past without the technical headaches. An excellent FPS made by a studio that started a trend in shooters that continues on.
After seeing the review by MandaloreGaming and the sale here I finally bought dusk. I was looking for something to distract me over the weekend. It did the job !
DIFFICULTY
I played in "normal" but raised it to "cero miedo" halfway through the game. Even then, it was possible to finish each level without taking a hit, provided you save every time there's a calm moment and reload after any hit. The F6/F9 shortcuts are great, and everything loads quick this way. The last 2-3 levels are really hard and demand more skill from the player, otherwise the game seems not too easy and not too hard all along. I didn't find many secrets. I sometimes felt like there was too much health/ammo around and not enough difference between weapons, but i might just not have understood some of the differences.
STYLE AND STORY
The main story is a bit generic, chosen-one style, but with a few interesting moments (revisiting the protagonist's home, i guess ?) that i wish we could know more about. Same for the levels, some are really impressive while others are a bit more generic. Most locations are memorable though. I really liked narration and level decoration. That level with the rainbow stairs was real pretty. It never felt repetitive all the way until the end. Even revisiting some locations with a twist was interesting.
REASONS TO BUY
I'm not planning to replay the single player story, nor to play in multi, so overall I paid 9€ for 16h of discovery and adventure. Definitely worth it, even at full price !
Got this after it was recommended on Reddit and honestly I'm blown away! I've been looking for something like this for a while and glad I've found it. It's the perfect mix of mid 90s to early 00's FPS genres. Love the campaign and the endless sessions have been a blast.
Dusk is one of the games that (for better or worse) helped spawn the "retro FPS revival" and for good reason. It's great. Everything from the movement to the weapons to the enemies to the environments and the soundtrack just all feel fantastic. And yes, you can pick up a bar of soap, throw it at an enemy, and they will explode. It is glorious.
