DUSK reintroduces you to a world where butchery and bloodshed must be mastered... if you're to survive 'til dawn. Inspired by Doom, Quake, Blood, Heretic, Hexen, Half-Life, Redneck Rampage and all your '90s favorites, while featuring a soundtrack by metal music mastermind Andrew Hulshult.
In three distinct campaign episodes hand-crafted from straight outta the '90s, players will battle through an onslaught of mystical backwater cultists, possessed militants and even darker forces and attempt to discover just what lurks beneath the Earth. Featuring a vast arsenal of badass weaponry including sickles, swords, crossbows, rifles, dual-wielded and double barreled shotguns and incredibly necessary grenade and rocket launchers, DUSK brings unapologetic retro action from start to finish.
In addition to the main campaign, DUSK features an Endless Survival Mode, putting you front and center against wave after wave of merciless enemies.
And for those looking for an extra challenge, DUSK also offers the chance to go head to head online to battle your friends in DUSKWorld arena multiplayer, where darkness hosts the worst of humanity in surprising new ways...
DUSK features cross-play multiplayer and the exclusive THE GOGATIORUM map for endless mode.
If you like Quake and/or Doom, you'll undoubtedly enjoy this title. the weapons are satisfying to use, the gameplay is fun and the enemies are fun to shoot. If you really enjoyed the game, I recommend buying the intruder edition to support the developers.
DUSK is one of those indie FPS that really nails the feel and look of the 90s, smooth and fast-paced gameplay, with a simple story and that relies mostly in skill, and not luck. If i have to define it, i would say it is a mix between DOOM and Quake, it contains the map scheme of DOOM (red, blue and yellow keycards), and the gameplay of Quake.
PROS:
Good retro graphics!, very customizable to suit your taste.
Excellent soundtrack, good mix of horror ambient and metal.
Very replayable, with an endless mode, (survival mode with hordes of enemies), and with many difficulties and secrets of each level.
Great controls and gameplay, bringing elements and physics never imagined in these kind of games, with lots of easter eggs.
CONS
Some physics are very weird, specially when jumping, it lacks the physic of jumping forward and "glide" down, (just jump forward and let go of w in the air). And the walls collisions are very exploitable thanks to bunny hop, but nothing to worry about.
The beginning is good but a little slow, but as a PRO DUSK is one of those games that the more time you spend on it, the more you like it.
Score: 9 / 10
Honestly the asking price of $20 USD is a steal and here's why:
- AMAZING Soundtrack! (Andrew Hulshult is a GOD and his work on this game, Doom Eternal Ancient Gods, Amid Evil, and his Doom 1 & 2 Remake Tracks are some of the best video game music you'll find)
- Fast Paced, Violent, Adrenaline Fueled Action!
- Sophisticated and Clever Level Design makes every level unique and fresh!
- TONS OF VARIETY in enemies. You'll NEVER encounter the same enemy over and over and over. Lots of different enemies to shoot and make for a game that NEVER GETS BORING.
- SUPER OPTIMIZED WITH NO BUGS OR CRASHES. This game will perform very well on any PC with plenty of customizable graphics and UI settings.
If you enjoy shooters of any kind, buying this is a no-brainer. If you enjoy retro shooters like doom, quake, heretic, shadow warrior, blood, duke 3d, etc, then you are objectively MISSING OUT BY NOT GETTING THIS AMAZING GAME!
I don't say this lightly, but the fact is the "Dusk" is the best example of what we would consider a classic FPS that has ever been released. It's masterful. The kinetic action from moment to moment is flawless. The soundtrack is out of this world. The level design is peerless. This genre has had alot of games we all treasure. Doom, Hexen, Quake, Blood.....we could go on and on. Dusk is an amalgamantion of all of them in the same way that Shovel Knight captures everything and more that is great about 8-bit platformers. I've rarely been so impressed with a game. There are a score of games in this genre that have been released the past year, and they are all worth your time. But "Dusk" is a true classic, a game that can proudly stand among the best ever made.
To sum up: The gameplay is frantic, fast and tight - the weapons feel and sound great - the music score is spectacular and the atmosphere second to none. The graphics use few polygons as part of the visual design but nevertheless the characters and setting feel intense and real. All in all I was very surprised by how good this game felt to play and I got reminded what fast gameplay and great shooting action is in today's cover shooter world.
