BETTER THAN DOOM 2016 & ETERNAL!

DOOM 64 feels like the "real" DOOM 3 - it still looks very much like the original and HELL ON EARTH and plays like those, just a tad darker. ID's DOOM 3 was an outstanding game - it took cues from SYSTEM SHOCK (lite) but it just wasn't DOOM anymore. Nightdive has brought DOOM 64 to the PC, never thought this would happen (apart from mods) but they did. They added modern controls, modern resolutions and a save/load function which is the only way to play. All these features make this my person favorite in the series. It has the best atmosphere (minus the cheap jump scares of DOOM 3) with better looking enemies. It sure beats the newer DOOM games DOOM 2016 and DOOM "SUPER MARIO" ETERNAL and is a lot cheaper. 5/5 for sure!

Good Doom game, falls short of originals

I love the Doom series, even perpetual whipping boy Doom3. Had never heard of Doom64 until I saw it on GOG so jumped at the chance to play it. To be brief. It's a good addition to the series, lots of fast-paced game play. The graphics have been changed and improved, and there's a new boss, a variant Imp plus an upgraded Pain Elemental which lives up to the name. Arch Vile , Chaingunner, Mastermind and Revenant are all absent. There's a new gun, it looks cool but its sound and attack is pathetic. It can apparently be upgraded if you hit up the secret levels, might make it tolerable. Altogether, this is fair- though the lack of Arch Vile and Revenant are very noticeable. The levels of themselves are simply not as good as Doom 1 + 2. They're decent, but- they feel more simplistic and less polished. Also the music! Where is it? All you get is some ambient sounds which are at times cool but, huge miss here. Sorry. If you've never played Doom. Go play Doom. If you played and love Doom 1+2 and want more of the same, then this is a fine choice.

Some say Doom 3, but it has its issues

Some will say this is what Doom 3 should have been but while certainly a good game it has a handful of issues. If you’ve enjoyed Doom 1 and 2 and are looking for next title to pick Doom 64 is a good option but beware of the limitaitons. Maps are unnecessarily confusing. For example, some switches will affect something at the other side of the map with no obvious sign what they do so player ends up running around scratching their heads wondering what to do next. At times they are also tedious (especially when doing pistol start). Having to shotgun couple barons in a big room doesn’t add to difficulty of a map but only to time spent. Presumably due to memory limitations the game doesn’t include Chaingunners, Revenants or Arch-viles. You may argue that Arch-viles are universally hated when they show up by it’s undeniable that there’s only so many ways encounter with zombiemen, imps, big imps and flying imps can be constructed. After a while the game felt a bit stale and I couldn’t help but wish for more varied roster of monsters. Speaking of monsters, Doom 64 make Pain Elemental, probably the most loathed monster even more annoying. Lost Souls which are unable to spawn will now explode making strategy of hugging Pain Elemental not viable any more. Lost Souls are also much more aggressive than in Doom 1 or 2. I don’t think that change was for the best. I’m also not a fan of graphics (though that is more subjective). Enemies look like they are plastic toys and abundance of greys, browns and blacks (while certainly ‘dark’) is less interesting than what Doom 1 and 2 had to offer. I also really dislike the changes to Cacodemon (which is no longer a lovable tomato) and Pain Elemental. PS. For people wanting to play on Linux you might give Doom64 EX or Doom64 Retribution a try.

Best version of doom

I've played Doom I on pc since 1993, and it was very impressive game at the time. Needless to say, but it has also aged very well so I feel that it is still very much worth playing. I never had SNES or N64 or actually ANY console in the 90's so this N64 version of doom is completely new form of this game to me today. It is quite different from the original but to me I would go as far as to say that it is the best version of doom that I've ever played. So, I think that is enough said...
