Hilarious script, great story and a pretty fun game. The combat can get frustrating and sometimes meeting inconsequential bosses who completely wreck can be. However, the game itself is fun and presents a good challenge the first time through. By the end of Ego Draconis you should have a pretty good grasp of the attributes and skills and the second time through should be more smooth.
All-in-all, I bought this game for cheap and it brought me back to CRPGs, and I love Larian for it!
I have this game on steam, I sort of feel like buying it here on GOG as well because I want to support GOG and Larian studios at the same time.
Hand made quests, that are fun! even a simple fetch quest will be fun because it rarely is just simply fetch and retrieve!
Combat could be improved yet the gear and all makes it all worth it.
Brilliant game, and every quest was fun!
If you have played kingdoms of amalur you will surely not regret this game either.
This game is a hidden gemstone, do you dare to try find it?
Larian studios has yet to disappoint me
Not wanting to make any advertising for the website owner's, divinity II had been released one year after the witcher, and is far below it. I got the game based of globally positive reviews underlining the storytelling and the gameplay all packed in a nice artistic direction, and I found all quite under what I expected.
Divinity II is not a bad game. I would even say it's a very good hack & slash, pushing the munchkin in all of us to always get better equipment and level. But out of that, the story for which I never felt concerned, as well as the artifical limits requiring brainless levelling at the beginning of the game, combined with a total lack of challenge at high level made the whole experience bitter.
To be done once. Replay value... not fantastic.
Let me start with the good aspects.
Music is great. Some pieces were truly powerful and memorable. But when you want to enjoy it more, it ends because you are leaving the location.
Writing is good. Writers were able to create funny, enjoyable scenes that made laugh throughout the game. Plenty of pleasant allusions; even Monty Python was there! But once again, why bother writing several variants of response if the outcome is the same? Why have almost all of the quests linear? And why not create several endings while you have a team of good writers?
Now let's talk about the most unpleasant thing - gameplay. It is TEDIOUS. It is just hack'n'slash in its most boring form. In the beginning of the game there were very few enemies and it was not noticeable. But the further I went, the the bigger hoardes of enemies I had to kill. And it was becoming boring... Then draconic form came and it turns out it is the same level of fun. Probably the devs thought their fighting system is good so at some point in the game you have fortresses filled with hundreds of practically identical enemies. And you click and click and click and they heal themselves and you click even more. Wow! And I mean, one flying fortress could take up hours. Hours of mouse
That said, I was really trudging through the game at some point only because I wanted a sense of completion and was interested in the story.
If you enjoy a good RPG where dialogues could be important and really do something, if you want your decisions to matter later in the game, if you want to have different endings, if you don't like mindles mouse clicking, this game is not for you. Better spend your money on other games from Larian.
I discovered this game by sheer chance and I'm glad I did. Although it's not the best game I played, it was an enjoyable experience with interesting features. Some were implemented better, some worse.
First, I have to give developers credit for witty writing. It was the thing I enjoyed the most. The part on the island where you recruit staff for your tower is still among my favourite bits of the game.
The skill tree leaves you a lot of freedom to create the character you want. You can choose from variety of warrior, ranger and magic abilities without restriction. However, this means the system doesn't hold your hand and you need to be more careful with distributing points.
On the other hand, I didn't like platforming in this game. I think it's very interesting feature, but the controls felt a little clumsy for that kind of stuff. Fortunately, there is no fall damage.
Playing as a dragon showed promise at first, but was very limited and didn't bring much to the game in my opinion. I also encountered few bugs, like insta kill by one of the enemies.
Despite few problems I had with this game, it was still an enjoyable experience for me. I got it really cheap on the sale and I was surprised I didn't hear about it before.
