You are Isaac Clarke, an engineer on the spacecraft USG Ishimura. You're not a warrior. You're not a soldier. You are, however, the last line of defense between the remaining living crew and deadly reanimated corpses. The undead have become Necromorphs; horrific zombie-alien hybrids that won't succumb to traditional means. Fortunately, your offense is equally unique, as the high-powered mining tools at your disposal provide the means to fight against the threat.
Messy monster slaying.
The Necromorphs are unlike any enemies you've seen before. Headshots do about as much damage to them as flicking rubber bands. To survive, you'll need to dismember their insect-like limbs, one at a time.
Improvised weapons.
There aren't many traditional firearms aboard the Ishimura, but there's plenty of stopping power in Isaac's toolkit. Send horizontal or vertical blasts of energy at enemies with the Plasma Cutter, remotely control a high-speed sawblade with the Disc Ripper, and fill hallways with wide swaths of destruction with the Line Gun. Switch things up with alternate fire modes, and purchase upgrades to increase ammo, power, and reload speed.
Real-time attacks.
Whatever you do, don’t drop your guard. Everything takes place in real-time. That means any action you take, whether it be reloading or digging through your inventory, gives the Necromorphs a perfect opportunity to attack. This nightmare has just begun and it’s up to you to get to the bottom of what happened here.
This game won't work modern computers. There's an issue with vsync that causes certain scripted events to not happen, because they're tied to your framerate for some reason. Because of this it's impossible to progress beyond the intro. Look up "Dead Space invisible door" if you want details. I tried the recommended fixes, and it still doesn't work. This game is unplayable, in the actual and literal sense.
Some nice ideas and the automatic saving helped me avoiding a lot of time loss, but to me it's clearly a parody, this game managed to get me entertain for 6 hours, bore me the next 6 hours, and finally stayed on my computer for 24 hours, as I had 12 hours doing anything else than playing this game. Some nice ideas, like interesting HUD, and some other features I won't spoil for you, but clearly not a fun game for me. Jumpscares, corridors and scripts will be the only things you see in it, the graphics are not bad but not good, the story is written by a lazy person, and shooting monsters is more enjoyable in a lot of other games. It barely reaches 11/20 on my list.
This simply doesn't run properly on PC. It is slow and cumbersome trying to do anything. Just trying to change direction takes an eternity, even after turning the mouse sensitivity up to the max.
There are graphical glitches galore, eg the video (which you can't bypass) at the start of the game extrusions of one of the character's hair starts morphing and then stretching across the screen. This continues to happen even as I move through the scene to the main platform. I thought maybe a driver update would fix the problem, but no, I'm already running the latest driver.
Movement is virtually impossible, particularly when my character cannot move through an open door. It was about this time that I realised this game wasn't worth the effort. I understand it was a good solid game on consoles when it was first released but to be frank, this is garbage on the PC. I'll be uninstalling this one. Very disappointing.
Most games I play have a quick save ability. Whenever I expect something to be hiding around a suspicious corner, I save. Whenever a horde of enemies appear, I save. Whenever the game auto-saves, I save. The games I've played that lacked this ability tended not to be so immersive making my experience playing it rather standard... except for Dead Space.
Dead Space is one the most captivating and immersive games I have ever played. Despite the third-person camera, I felt as if I were playing through the eyes of Isaac, himself. The somewhat stiff controls remind the player that Isaac isn't anything special, he's merely an engineer investigating a derelict ship. It's this reasoning that makes him such a relatable protagonist.
The content of the game is terrifying, resembling the likes of Resident Evil. The different types of enemies allow for a vast array of strategies to be used and while throughout the game Isaac acquires quite a large arsenal, each weapon has distinct strengths and weaknesses among the different enemies.
As a chronic quicksaver, the scariest part for me is the lack of a quicksave ability. You have to save at designated "save" locations marked by a holographic camera icon. All those suspicious corners I'm about to turn into? All those hordes of enemies charging at me? Scare the ever living shit out of me when the lack of quicksave is combined with an immersive and terrifying world.
In case the terrifying necromorphs aren't enough to scare you, Dead Space offers psychological horror elements when Isaac continues to watch the last transmission sent by his girlfriend - that he received before her ship went out of communication - all throughout the game.
Not only is this game scary, for you horror-loving masochists, its also carries a very deep story unlike most games in its genre.
Dead Space is a unique game paralleled only - in my opinion - by its sequel.
