A buggy Mess

It pains me to say that you should stay away from this game even at a sale price. There are good ideas here, ruined by a publisher that simply does not care about consumers. The concept of the game is based loosely on the SCP collection, in that it centers around a secret government agency that hides the various anomalies and strange objects that threaten reality. The main character finds the agency, and its bizarre headquarters, The Oldest House searching for her brother, who was kidnapped when they were children. Grpahically, the game is nothing special, but it has solid voice acting, plot development and progression, which can make the player excuse a lot. There are some truly inexcusible problems, however. First, there's the dispicable practices of the publishers. Control was originally released as a finished product. Then, out of the blue, it was re-released with DX-12 support. Those who bought the original, and the expansion, were simply told to buy the new release if they wanted what should have been done in a patch. Worse yet, the game was buggy upon release and most of those bugs either simply haven't been addressed, and more bugs have cropped up since. So on top of a cynical cash grab, they can't even be bothered to hammer out the problems of the original. Instabilities abound. Some of the boss battles have terminal bugs that will either crash your computer or make it so that you cannot complete them. The publisher has not addressed any of these. You can spend a few hours hunting around the internet for various fixes, but honestly, it's not worth it.

Amazing but haunted by conventions.

Control is amazing. The look and feel is endearing and mysterious, the story telling is great. The atmosphere is thick as fogg and exploring the world, half lovecraft, half SCP is extremely satisfying. However, all these good ideas and the extraordinary storytelling is thrown to sub-par gameplay that feels it is only there for the developers to justify it as a "game" towards the gamer crowd. Fetch-quest follows fetch-quest; shooting range follows shooting range, everything feels the same. For some reason the developers also felt necessary to clutter their mystery action-adventure not only with 3rd-person shooting, sluggish, outdated and uninspired but also with RPG leveling up and customization of weapons on top which turns the whole experience into a chore that is in the way of an amazing story. The whole gameplay is a massive climb down qualitywise from Allan wake that came years before Control. It is actually a shame.

Good, but not great...

For evry Pro there is a Con, Combat: Ablities feel great and meaty. But gun mechanicas and considerably weaker and tied to a god awful loot system that has no place in a game like this. I found myself using only two diferent weapon types the entire time. The enemy design is ok, but the reward for engaging with said enemies is just more terrible loot that im just going to scrap anyway. i ended up just running past enemies towards the end of the game as i simply had no interest in the rewards. Story: World building and lore are very interesting and wierd. But the actual main story that takes place doesnt seam to go anywhere. Same goes with the characters. Jessie goes from "what the hell is going on here" to "I'm the only one that can stop this" seamingly in a matter of minutes. The side characters are all well acted and look great but just stand around not doing anything. Sat in a chair or stood infront of a terminal, waiting for you to talk to them again. Side missions on the other hand are great, offering more lore and world building, that wich control does very well. Unique enemies and locations are the highlight of the entire game. There are also a bunch of fetch quests that are pretty meh. The DLC: Each offers a single new mechanic that is only usefull in its respected new area. Similar to the base game, world building and lore are great but the main story is weak and forgetable. Visuals: Probably the main selling point of Control. Long story short, its gorgeous, and the destructable enviroments are brilliant. Some locations are simply stunning, Opinion: Solid game ruined by a terrible upgrade loot system and weak plot. But the world building has legs and im hoping a sequel expands on this aspect. WAIT FOR SALE.

Very unique, but boring

To be fair, I am not exactly a fan of narratives that are intentionally vague and ambiguous. But the biggest problem I have with the narrative, it's that, well...for 90% of the game, NOTHING is happening. It's about unraveling a mystery, but this is done through uninteresting fetch-quests and mostly expository dialogue. I also didn't like the charatcterization of the protagonist. Too many inner monologues that directly state how she feels or what she wants to do. This game likes it's vague narrative, but has almost no subtelty, to be honest. Gameplay is OK. It's fun to shoot stuff, and the telekinetic powers look and feel good to use. The problem is, is that it's so easy to fall for a dominant strategy. Yea, I could use Charge and Ground slam, switch weapons etc, but once I upgraded launch, almost everything could be beaten with it. The RPG elements feel tacked on, providing nothing but stat bonuses, which makes me question why they are ven there in the first place. There is some costumization there, but I spent way too much time in the menus, discarding upgrades that were lower level. Also, who the fuck thought that it was a good idea to flash bureau alerts in your face during gameplay, where they cover half of the fucking screen?? It's not like they could happen during a difficult combat encounter and disorient you...Same goes for entering a new area. I did side content as well. Some of it is pretty cool, while the rest is more tech quests. I guess my biggest issue is that I am just not someone who appreciates atmosphere and visuals. I am a gameplay driven player, and the gameplay in control is competent, but mediocre, and the pacing is a slog. Raycevick's video made me appreciate the game more, but not enough to want to go back and finish the main story. Yea, I know there is a cool set-piece in the ashtray maze, but if the game is a fucking slog until that point, do you blame me for not wanting to push further? I certainly don't.
