Confusing to the point of frustrating

The story and gameplay mechanics is enough to keep you going. The gamepad controls using XBOX Series Controller are great and movement is easy. Can't comment on keyboard/mouse. The world of Control is confusing but they went a bit too "realistic" and made the game actually confusing. It was hard to enjoy at certain times. There is weak cognitive correlation in the game where it is difficult for the player to identify which action results to what. You are left guessing what to do more than half the time with vague and poorly worded missions. Some items needed to complete a mission are ridiculously hidden beyond the line of sight and there is no natural way for the player to look towards that direction. Whether the game devs thought they were being clever or not, it was unnecessarily frustrating for what's supposed to be a simple side-mission (i.e. Burn the Trash). It wasn't even a "puzzle". The item placement was just simply stupid. The game has very poor navigation aid and the map greatly adds to the confusion with no identifiable legends to mark different floor levels in the same area leading you to go around in circles for a good amount of time. For anyone looking for a game to chill to, this is probably not it. Losing 10% of money every death also makes it a game with lots of grinding. If you're not willing to dedicate the time to it, you will likely be heading to YouTube a lot.

A buggy Mess

It pains me to say that you should stay away from this game even at a sale price. There are good ideas here, ruined by a publisher that simply does not care about consumers. The concept of the game is based loosely on the SCP collection, in that it centers around a secret government agency that hides the various anomalies and strange objects that threaten reality. The main character finds the agency, and its bizarre headquarters, The Oldest House searching for her brother, who was kidnapped when they were children. Grpahically, the game is nothing special, but it has solid voice acting, plot development and progression, which can make the player excuse a lot. There are some truly inexcusible problems, however. First, there's the dispicable practices of the publishers. Control was originally released as a finished product. Then, out of the blue, it was re-released with DX-12 support. Those who bought the original, and the expansion, were simply told to buy the new release if they wanted what should have been done in a patch. Worse yet, the game was buggy upon release and most of those bugs either simply haven't been addressed, and more bugs have cropped up since. So on top of a cynical cash grab, they can't even be bothered to hammer out the problems of the original. Instabilities abound. Some of the boss battles have terminal bugs that will either crash your computer or make it so that you cannot complete them. The publisher has not addressed any of these. You can spend a few hours hunting around the internet for various fixes, but honestly, it's not worth it.

Crash to desktop every 10mins

May update my review if they ever fix the game. Both the Steam and GoG versions apparently have serious stability issues. Some people have very reproducible crashes during a particular boss fight...I can't get past about the 30 minute mark in the game since it just randomly crashes when interacting with objects, walking through an empty corridor, pausing the game... Not an issue with my hardware. This is a pretty widespread problem and I've not had this problem with other graphically intensive games. None of the suggested fixes have helped, so if they don't eventually patch it I'll just return the game; it's unplayable like this. Can't review the rest of the game because I can't get to it.

Great game, horrible technical issues

The game is nice, story is interesting, mechanics good. CRASHES EVERY 5 MINS!!!!!!!!! On lowest settings with adequate hardware, even when the game runs smoothly on good settings. At some point it crashed out during saving and corrupted the files. Downloading backup from GOG did not help, had to restart a mission. Good that there was at least and option to do that, not to have to start the game over after going halfway into it. 2 stars because of original story and gameplay

Incredible

Loved it from top to bottom. Really satisfying combat, rewarding exploration and beautiful level design. You're mostly doing the same gameplay-wise for most of the game but it works because the presentation is impeccable, the world remains intriguing even after finishing the game, and basically because it's FUN. Also played both expansions (and 'Alan Wake' before to get the full context). 'AWE' was very mid - more of the same but nothing special. 'The Foundation', though, is great. 'Control' at its best. Compelling mysteries, an awesome action set piece, cool new location, and two new traversal/combat abilities. Way better than AWE, and a proper epilogue to the game. As a caveat, I'll say that I've played both DLCs more than half a year after finishing the main game, and I lost some of the combat flow and mechanic muscle it required, so I switched on 'immortality' and never looked back. You still take damage, and if you're like me, you'll still feel like you're about to die, but you don't, so you never loose progress. Completely enjoyed both pieces of DLC thanks to this, so I recommend doing so if you are in a similar position.
