Description
Combat Mission Beyond Overlord (CMBO) is the first of the award winning and  ground breaking Combat Mission game series.  It recreates battles in Northwestern Europe from the June 6th 1944 Allied "D-Day" invasion of Normandy through the end of the war in May 1945. Combat Mission allows players to lead historically accurate forces from six nationalities (U.S., British, Canadian, Polish, French, and German) into battle on widely varied terrain in all weather and lighting conditions.

Combat is simulated in turns using science and behavioral logic, not “gamey” conventions such as hit points, armor ratings, tables of resolution, or other overly simplistic concepts.  The pioneering “WeGo” gameplay system helps avoid many of the realism problems of other games by requiring both players to submit their orders and having them carried out simultaneously.  The resulting 60 second replayable “movie” can be viewed from any angle and perspective before moving onto the next turn.
Play stand alone battles, connected battles, or “Quick Battles” created on-the-fly.  The full featured Editor allows you to create your own battles.  A large amount of community generated battles and Mods are available for free download.  In addition to the very challenging single player mode, two people can play on one computer, TCP/IP network connection, or via PBEM.

Apply common sense and intuition and don’t expect "gamey" tactics to work - no matter how successful they were in other games. You will be forced to plan ahead, use timing, suppression fire, feints and flanking attacks to survive, let alone to win. When planning your moves, think about what would work in the real world, not what would work in other games.

awesome strategy game

This series is one of my favorite of all time. I own it from battlefront but now that it is here I may buy it again to have it on GOG. I only gave it 4 stars because the third in the series has more functionality that was implemented and alot of the scenarios from this one could be played on it. This is a squad level Psuedo Real Time game. you get to think about your moves like a turn based but once you give your orders you watch both sides orders get carried out in a 60 second movie. Ultra realistic Fog of war has your guys reporting sound contacts and sometimes wrong information if the moral and training level is low for the unit. Units follow orders but have their own AI ...just because you told that platoon to cross that open ground and assault the machine gun team doesn't mean they won' lay down and crawl toward the nearest cover once they start getting shot up. Lots of scenarios to play and the only down side is setting up a random scenario can be a chore. You use a point system to buy units and artillery(offboard with spotters onboard) and even air cover(sporadic and no influence from player except that it exists but then all your units are just arrayed along your edge...so expect to spend a good half hour setting up how you want your forces and since you take turns in multiplayer that adds up. and the initial orders phase can be long but once you get by that you will find that once engaged your guys need very little micromanaging as the TAC AI will behave fairly effectively and you can watch the big picture. Armored combat is just as detailed as the infantry combat with armor thickness and angle as well as shell trajectory and toughness...shells will break up upon hitting armor and a non penetrating hit can result in crew casualties due to splintering of inner armor..also a buttoned up tank is less vulnerable to hits but blind as a bat to nearby contacts on it's flanks. Multiplayer can be wonky but way funner than getting chewed up and spit out by the ai. hotseat is fun and quick however the fog of war IS A HUGE PART OF THE FUN SO DON'T LOOK WHEN IT'S YOUR OPPONENTS TURN (I remember dropping artillery and starting a fire and not realizing until after the game that I had scored a lucky hit and knocked out one of my opponents vehicles he had hidden behind the building. PBEM is funfor distance but it involves about 4 emails per turn ....2 for planning and 2 for watching. it mixes it up so that the computer that generates the next minute of the movie based on your orders is alternated each time. at least that is how it seems to me. The game generates a text file that is coded information(you can look its a wall of gobbledegook) that you send as an email attachment....get a drop box account..that cuts PBEM down to the time of a hotseat game. Just share a folder with your opponent and drag and drop the text files into it .....trust me it makes a difference and dropbox is free. I have had a friend get a direct connection game working but its difficult and you have to know what your doing with ip's there are no servers. I could go on and on and I am sure I missed something but I hope you get the gist...oh and one last thing..I love this game and own all three so if you ever want to play a game I'm down for a PBEM game. email me at solitear @ yahoo.com

One of the best of it's time!

I remember buying this game when it was new. For an underdog developer at the time you wont get much better than this. Even for someone like me who usually didn't care for turn-based games I couldn't put this one down. It even taught me some about WW2 history! Where this game really excelled though was in the ability to be modded by the users. People made countless amounts of high-res texture packs, more detailed models and environments. Anyone know if this offering from GOG allows the third party mods to work?

Discovered The Best Game Ever

I don't write Reviews, but I just had to for This one! I've seen this game a few times over the years but couldn't see the value, then I watched a video on youtube, and I played CM with more understanding, it only took a short time after playing before I was wondering why I wasted all this time without it, then the editor Wow! If you buy it spend a little time learning from video tutorials online from any CM game. This CM is better than many modern games.

A Great 3D Tactical Game - in 2018!

It's a turn-based 3D "puzzle game", with a war theme. You don't need to be a 'wargamer' to fall in love with it! Like the recent "Into the Breach", the map you play on has a certain size, depending on the scenarios - from small to huge. You start with your units on one side and have a number of options for each unit. You give your orders for your units, like in every 2D turn-based game you may have played before and then click "GO!". The WeGo system executes your moves and your opponents moves simultaniously. This is the moment, this game turns into a war movie or "Company of Heroes 2" or any similar RTS-type action game for 60 seconds, after every 'turn'. Fog of War, forests, hills and valleys hide the enemy units and positions. Bad terrain can slow you down. Your units can bleed out or panic. Ballistic projectiles drop down like it's March Madness. Positional sound effects (SURROUND SOUND!) are superb and 'camera-shakes'(!) inform you somewhere, something BIG exploded! That is the moment, when the sound & graphics work as intended, when the game sucks you in! After the turn played out and is over, you get your next turn and chance to figure out how and where to move your forces and or engage the enemy. Turn-based moves allows you to easier follow what is happening at all times. Lets you think(!) and make more deliberate moves. You are never overwhelmed. If you don't care about the history of this game, or the (valid!) recommendations of dedicated war gamers, you just want to play something fun and cool - THIS game still delivers it and can compete with modern TBS/RTS titles in 2018. And when this game starts to click with you, you may drop in endless hours, since you can play it as a casual(!) game on and off. You can consume in small chunks, one scenario at a time. [Use dgVoodoo2 for smooth FPS on modern PCs/GPUs? I play in WWII reduced colors (WWII movie-like] Similar games: Achtung Panzer/Graviteam Tactics/Steel Division/WarGame European Escalation.

Good times

My brother and I used to spend days on a single match over this game. We had an absolute blast every time. It never was much to be counted for graphics, but the depth of its tactical gameplay and two player turn based mode made it one of the most fun strategy games we ever played. If you enjoy challenging a sibling or anyone else at home to a game of chess now and then, you will definetly have a lot of fun with this one.
