Description
Combat Mission Beyond Overlord (CMBO) is the first of the award winning and  ground breaking Combat Mission game series.  It recreates battles in Northwestern Europe from the June 6th 1944 Allied "D-Day" invasion of Normandy through the end of the war in May 1945. Combat Mission allows players to lead historically accurate forces from six nationalities (U.S., British, Canadian, Polish, French, and German) into battle on widely varied terrain in all weather and lighting conditions.

Combat is simulated in turns using science and behavioral logic, not “gamey” conventions such as hit points, armor ratings, tables of resolution, or other overly simplistic concepts.  The pioneering “WeGo” gameplay system helps avoid many of the realism problems of other games by requiring both players to submit their orders and having them carried out simultaneously.  The resulting 60 second replayable “movie” can be viewed from any angle and perspective before moving onto the next turn.
Play stand alone battles, connected battles, or “Quick Battles” created on-the-fly.  The full featured Editor allows you to create your own battles.  A large amount of community generated battles and Mods are available for free download.  In addition to the very challenging single player mode, two people can play on one computer, TCP/IP network connection, or via PBEM.

Apply common sense and intuition and don’t expect "gamey" tactics to work - no matter how successful they were in other games. You will be forced to plan ahead, use timing, suppression fire, feints and flanking attacks to survive, let alone to win. When planning your moves, think about what would work in the real world, not what would work in other games.

How it Plays

I have two of these games on disk. This one and Barbarossa to Berlin. Units are squads, individual tanks, and guns. You can play a single battle or a complete operation (3-5 related battles). For each battle or operation you are assigned a specific group of units. During a deployment phase before the battle you can put you units anywhere in a specific zone on the game map. Once they are deployed, you provide commands to each unit for the next minute of battle. Once you hit start, that minute of battle will play out. Tanks, guns, and squads will hide, fire, move and fire, or just move depending on the commands you provided. After 1 minute, the battle will temporarily stop and then another minute of commands will need to be given. Battles stop and either once side is eliminated, runs off the map, morale decays to the point it surrenders, or time runs out (basically representing both sides running out of ammunition). Through that minute you are watching you bazooka or panzercreck men and hoping they knock out tanks or pillboxes, watching or machine gunners stopping the enemy from overrunning a position, or watching artillery wiping out an advance or falling harmlessly in a field. I prefer Barbarossa to Berlin over Beyond Overlord because you get a better feel for how the weapons evolved and how important elimination of obsolete systems is. But they are both excellent tactical WWII games. If you do not have the time to put in to each Combat Mission game, you might try Close Combat which is simpler to play and each battle takes less time to play. However, this is the more realistic because it represents the actual battles rather than a stripped down version.

Probably the best wargame ever made.

Poor graphics and one heck of a steep learning curve. But once you start getting in, the game has amazing depth and (re)playability. The most detailed tank system anywhere ever! Height, impact angles, muzzle velocities, things like turret side armour thickness, ground pressure. Unbelievable amount of data and it all matters. The sequels improve on some aspects, but this is THE ONE. And this is the one about west front, which is the most interesting theatre for many.

Grognard lite

Well, the depth is quite a bit actually. Setup takes awhile if your careful and the turns may take hours if not days. Each unit card has alot of info, which is great if your a WW2 history guy. Which i am . Check out the rest of the series: Barbarossa to Berlin which i enjoyed better with the mod CD or Afrika Korps, the third installment

One of the Greats

This game introduced me to the whole wargaming genre and what a great way to start. While not perfect, it offers a semi-realistic simulation of battle that can have you on the edge of your seat at times, as you struggle to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your forces. You learn to make them work together as a team--tanks supporting infantry supporting tanks, for example. I say it's not perfect because the AI in attack mode is very lame and will run right into the line of fire. In defense mode, already dug in, it can be quite formidable. If you can find other people to play against, email or internet play can be a blast as no AI is as sneaky as a real human. This game has one big plus over the later sequels: more artillery on the American side, hence, more explosions--and who doesn't like explosions!

Splendid!

The game uses a 'we-go' simultaneous moving system creating a little movie for each turn - allowing you to curse at the screen after you realize you maybe should have done a little reconnaissance before charging toward those woods eh? The first of a terrific series of games by Battlefront. Tons of scenarios and PBEM is a blast. Well worth the price.
