Description
Combat Mission Beyond Overlord (CMBO) is the first of the award winning and  ground breaking Combat Mission game series.  It recreates battles in Northwestern Europe from the June 6th 1944 Allied "D-Day" invasion of Normandy through the end of the war in May 1945. Combat Mission allows players to lead historically accurate forces from six nationalities (U.S., British, Canadian, Polish, French, and German) into battle on widely varied terrain in all weather and lighting conditions.

Combat is simulated in turns using science and behavioral logic, not “gamey” conventions such as hit points, armor ratings, tables of resolution, or other overly simplistic concepts.  The pioneering “WeGo” gameplay system helps avoid many of the realism problems of other games by requiring both players to submit their orders and having them carried out simultaneously.  The resulting 60 second replayable “movie” can be viewed from any angle and perspective before moving onto the next turn.
Play stand alone battles, connected battles, or “Quick Battles” created on-the-fly.  The full featured Editor allows you to create your own battles.  A large amount of community generated battles and Mods are available for free download.  In addition to the very challenging single player mode, two people can play on one computer, TCP/IP network connection, or via PBEM.

Apply common sense and intuition and don’t expect "gamey" tactics to work - no matter how successful they were in other games. You will be forced to plan ahead, use timing, suppression fire, feints and flanking attacks to survive, let alone to win. When planning your moves, think about what would work in the real world, not what would work in other games.

Great game -- much better than it looks.

Crappy graphics aaren't that bad once you get used to them...but forget all that...this is a super fun game if you are into war games. It's easy to play and a lot of fun. That's what it's all about right? You can dive right in, but reading the manual won't hurt. The cool thing is that your strategies will work! That is, the game is fairly realistic and has a good feel to it. It's also not hard. You have a fair chance. I bought the boxed version some time ago and it was a lot of fun. As others here have said, once you get into it, you're likely to play for more hours than you planned. And due to the decent interface, it's fun, not work! At this price, you can't lose. If you like war games and particularly smaller scale action, you'll love this game. Set some tanks on fire!

The most-accurate Tactical Wargame ever!

Along with an engaging we-go system, pretty graphics (compared to boards of hexagons), and three dozen missions, this game has something amazing. Pretty much every vehicle or infantry division is lovingly modeled. If you ever wanted to know how effective a flamethrower tank is in city fighting, here's your chance. No other wargame can compare to the Combat Mission Mission series. Just buy it right now!

Not just for history-buffs!

A lot is said about Combat Mission's incredibly accuracy and attention to historic detail. I'll bet, though, that this doesn't interest everyone... The good news is, even of you don't know your pazerfausts from your panzershcrecks this is a brilliantly fun wargame. The key feature is the 'We-Go' turn system, where both players give a minute's worth of others then watch as the battle unfolds, a little at a time. This revolutionary - it captures all the micro-management and deep thinking of a traditional; turn-based game while somehow being more exciting than most real-time games, since you are able to sit back and watch your daring pincer movement rather than be distracted by other things. The game, I would say, is not even all that complex: once you've got to grips with moving your troops from cover to cover, it all falls into place and the interface seems delightfully simple. The downside of the game is its graphics - they do matter, as much of the enjoyment of newer games like Company of Heroes is the verisimilitude. However, the graphics are not as bad as they seem in screenshots, and there is a wonderful level of detail on tanks and vehicles. Whatever kind of wargame fan you are, don't miss this absolute classic!

Simply outstanding

Historically accurate, exceptional combast. Not a click fest RTS but a thinking logical game. Huge base of user developed scenarios and mods readily available. Also the company is coming out with an updated game with better garphics, better AI, more realistic unit behavior. Buy this then move up to the next level

Old wargames never die

A quirk of the serious wargame genre is that, regardless of the era it was built in, a decent wargame won't really ever become completely obsolete. While it can be incredibly annoying to go spend $100 on a brand new sim, only to find out that it's not very different from the sim that cost you $100 a couple years earlier, it can also be really nice to bump into $8 games like Combat Mission that still hold up very nicely. At it's core, CM is almost arcade-like in how it presents - the interface and controls are VERY simple, especially relative to it's contemporaries. This is a big part of why it's aged so well - what was a sort of sparse interface back in the day comes across as relatively streamlined to modern sensibilities. The gameplay itself is pretty deep, despite that presentation. As is to be expected, morale, ammo, visibility, experience, everything factors in to a unit's performance, and it plays like a wargame, not like an RTS. Likely the most noticable failing of the game is in the campaign layout. Unlike other titles available at the time, there isn't really actually much of a real linked campaign. This isn't really a pro or a con, because at it's heart CM is all about quality scenario play. While I do miss the added strategic element of having to carry (and thus preserve) a force across a long campaign, it's not a deal breaker. The other really notable sign of it's age are, of course, the graphics. While the game does a weirdly amazing job with weapon effects (the sounds are great, the explosions feel really, really legit, and the chaos of a serious gunfight is conveyed pretty well), it's hard to ignore that the scenery is ugly as hell, and, describing them generously, the unit depictions look like characters from Goldeneye on the N64. For $8 bucks though, if you can ignore that, you essentially have a more or less modern, softcore wargame that, provided it runs for you, competes on a gameplay level with any similar newer offering.
