Description
Combat Mission Beyond Overlord (CMBO) is the first of the award winning and  ground breaking Combat Mission game series.  It recreates battles in Northwestern Europe from the June 6th 1944 Allied "D-Day" invasion of Normandy through the end of the war in May 1945. Combat Mission allows players to lead historically accurate forces from six nationalities (U.S., British, Canadian, Polish, French, and German) into battle on widely varied terrain in all weather and lighting conditions.

Combat is simulated in turns using science and behavioral logic, not “gamey” conventions such as hit points, armor ratings, tables of resolution, or other overly simplistic concepts.  The pioneering “WeGo” gameplay system helps avoid many of the realism problems of other games by requiring both players to submit their orders and having them carried out simultaneously.  The resulting 60 second replayable “movie” can be viewed from any angle and perspective before moving onto the next turn.
Play stand alone battles, connected battles, or “Quick Battles” created on-the-fly.  The full featured Editor allows you to create your own battles.  A large amount of community generated battles and Mods are available for free download.  In addition to the very challenging single player mode, two people can play on one computer, TCP/IP network connection, or via PBEM.

Apply common sense and intuition and don’t expect "gamey" tactics to work - no matter how successful they were in other games. You will be forced to plan ahead, use timing, suppression fire, feints and flanking attacks to survive, let alone to win. When planning your moves, think about what would work in the real world, not what would work in other games.

Brilliant Tactical Wargame

Until CMBO came along tactical wargames tended to either be hex based, have poor graphics and/or relatively little detail in the vast amount of things affecting units in war. This game changed all that, right down to the complete modelling of tank armour vs different shells hitting at different angles, ranges, the whole works. The games turn based "we-go" system, whereby you issue orders at the same time as your opponent and then you both watch the action play out (you vs a human or AI, that is) for 60 seconds before having a chance to issue new orders... Well, this system was new, and it's still brilliant. This version comes with a whole load of scenarios pre-loaded beyond what was in the original box, which is a great touch. All around, a game to lose yourself in for days and weeks, and I hope GOG.com will be bringing along the sequels in the series - Russia and Africa / Italy - soon.

great tower defense game!

i agree with all the superlatives already lavished upon this game by other reviewers. i would simply add that this is also the best tower defence game i ve ever played. if you enjoy preparing static defence lines against hordes of attackers while sitting back for 30 turns to see if your intricate mesh of criss-crossing arcs of fire etc can hold them at bay, then get this game!

The closest to miniatures games there is

Simply the best wargame on computers. If you are into tabletop gaming, then this is what you want. I bought it when it first came out, and have been waiting for it to be put onto modern Windows systems. Ok, so the graphics are pre-rendering/polys etc, but they are representative of the period. They do have an advantage, in that they are purposely .bmp, so you can easily edit them (human skins are harder- think Sims 1). You get loads of mods in the pack straight off. You can easily put your house into it. All the sounds are .wav - so if you want to record your self swearing to replace the appropriate speech pack then you can. This isn't a 'collect resources and make units' with random men produced working together, and taking multiple hits. This is a realistic wargame, with men who think for themselves - tanks will ignore your orders to engage something that can't hurt them if they can see a bazooka or panzerfaust. Infantry take cover and stop firing if too much lead is thrown their way. EVERY infantry weapon is given combat power at different ranges, and as squads take casualties their firepower decreases. Ammo is counted, when your FO calls in fire support there is a delay, and when he shifts target there is a further delay while the guns recalculate. There is a whole system of 'blinds'- from 'There is something there' through to 'a vehicle?' - 'its a tank' - to type. Recce works- don't just rush in, have reserves. Real tactics work. It also supports 2 player by hot seat, Lan, internet and email. If you are a Miniatures gamer this is the game from you.

Still playing almost 20 years later

I could write a book on this game. 1st !! Let me get my critiques out of the way ,.. 1. I wish the this version was the Special Editon release. It has tons more content and improved graphics. 2. I wish support and Heavy weapons teams are not so freakiing slow that they are mostly defensive units. By the time you bedd to advance, they just finished running across a field and were setting up. They are hard use tactically. Best game to come out of the 2001 I still play all the different Combat Mission games .. PUT MORE ON GOG !!!

Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord

This is a hardcore, realistic WW2 tactical wargame.....but it has the distinction of being easy to learn, with an intuitive interface. It isn't really turn based as other posts have stated. It is WEGO.....you plot your moves while the computer AI is doing the same for his units. Then the turn plays out simultaneously as you watch, in 60 second increments. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great WW2 tactical wargame.
