Someone should have warned the Covenant children: “Never read aloud strange rituals.” Little did they know that their childish game would unleash unspeakable horrors upon the unsuspecting world. Now, many years later, Jeremiah Covenant, the last sane sibling, lies on his deathbed knowing his fragile existence is the only thing restraining the curse. His only hope is Patrick Galloway, a fellow soldier from the Great War and a specialist in abolishing evil abominations.
Welcome to Clive Barker’s Undying, a horrifying FPS romp of curses, strange, mad creatures, and family dysfunction gone terribly wrong. Step into the shoes of Patrick Galloway as you attempt to banish the evil using your arcane magic and the ever-dependable six shooter of metal grace. Pray to whatever god you believe in because this journey may end up costing your soul. First person shooter meets the contemporary master of horror fiction, don't miss it!
I played this game almost 10 years ago and it is still obe of the best horror titles arround even after all these years. All its superb story, design, pacing and overall atmosphere has held up quote nicely and it is highly recommended
This ranks as one of the FEW FPS's I truly enjoyed ... Right up there with BioShock and System Shock 2. Incredible story, spooky as hell, and great graphics for the time!
Unfortunately, although it got great reviews ... apparently it didn't sell well. Which is a shame. In a world of cookie-cutter games, this one stands unique.
Fantastic!
this is by far the best 1st person horror game ive played and ive played them all. this is one game i will buy again just to have. a game i wish they would remake with modern game engines. such as the Unreal 4 engine or even frost bite 2.0 the only other game that spooked me just as much was nosferatu wrath of malachi.
Clive Barker's Undying is a fun game that aged surprisingly well. It's one of the best blends of guns and magic I've ever seen. There's no doubt that it's an experience worth your time. For $1.50, this game is a steal!
The gunplay is fairly unique, with the closest comparison being Bioshock 2. You have a weapon in one hand and magic in the other. There's 8 weapons and 8 spells alongside some extra throwable items. It's all fast-paced classical FPS action with a bit more depth than most other games of the era.
The biggest problem with the game is its strange difficulty curve. Early on, you're very vulnerable and poorly equipped. All you have is a revolver, limited health kits and some weak spells. Suddenly, halfway through the game, you become a demigod. The shield spell lets you become nearly invincible and lasts for a long time. Stack this on top of all the other upgrades you can acquire by that point, and the only thing that can kill you is environmental hazards (and the final boss glitching out). By the end of the game, I had hundreds of health kits and could easily wipe out any encounter without expending a single bullet (on the hardest difficulty, mind you!).
In addition, I went into this game expecting more of an action-horror game with some metroidvania elements. In reality, this game is pure action with little genuine horror to speak of. I expected that I would be able to uncover secrets in the mansion as I gained more powers, but this never really happened. The mansion was very linear and there were few to no secrets anywhere. Ultimately, it's best to think of this game as Irish Doomguy blasting his way through a haunted house attraction.
In short, Undying is a very unique game that stands out for numerous reasons. I enjoyed the first half even though it could be unfair at times, and I enjoyed the latter half even though it was rather easy. This game is a bargain these days, so it's worth a shot if you're interested.
This game is still amazing, after all these years. It deserved a spiritual sequel, that I hoped Clive Barker's Jericho would be, but, alas, while the characters were good, it had none of this one's finesse. The world building and the attention to detail are extraordinary, as are the powers. I can still remember how hilarious the laughing skulls were, and how I jumped when the Tibetan war cannon started moving. I couldn't even finish the game the first time, I was so scared.
Years later, when I approached it again, I found that the scare factor dies down a bit by the last third of the game, when you get to the human enemies. Then, Eternal Autumn, while a very cool name, proved to be a bit of a let down.
Still, it can't shake my absolute adoration for Lisbeth, her eldest brother, and the damn scrying.
