While Chained Echoes has the advantage of decades of distance from the games it looks to for inspiration, it’s a better experience in many instances than those vaunted games from which it arose. I prefer this combat, storytelling, and approach to progression and exploration to many of the JRPGs I grew up so enamored with playing. That’s the highest praise I can heap on a game so removed in time from the games to which it might be compared. Whether you currently count yourself a JRPG connoisseur or fondly recall the ʼ90s heyday of the genre, Chained Echoes is well worth your time.

Forgettable and gimmicky

A disappointing RPG despite all its praise. The overdrive system is gimmicky and adds no real depth or strategy. The dialogue is painfully barren and the conveyance of the game is fairly poor. In-combat UI does a piss poor job at showing you buffs, status, effects and general status of a party member. The information is obviously there, but just poorly presented. Like, what rpg doesn´t use icons to denote buffs and status effects. Instead you have to select either the party member or target to see their current status listed out in text... Rookie mistake. No hate on the dev as only one guy worked on this but that does not make me enjoy it more for that fact.

Combat is tough at first with every fight a potenial loss. But you learn more about the mechanics and how they work and it becomes chalenging rather that leathal.

Not for me

TL;DR Fine to look at. Bugs, design problems, generally repetitive and uninteresting. The good: Decent visuals/art The bad: The map layout is needlessly sparse. There are large areas of walking space with nothing of interest and repeated set pieces. The battle system is repetitive. This appears to be due to the focus/time spent of the overheat component. The whole concept of the overheat thing is unnecessary. It doesn't add value and the RNG is so random it feels punishing. The whole of the overheat system could be replaced by a (de)buff inflicted by enemies. At least that would feel more organic. The plot is derivative and uninspired. The dialog goes on and on and on and, few of the characters have redeeming qualities. The menu flow/layout is badly designed. The battle menu is wonky with bad cursor positioning and scrolling. The crystals combining and usage system is cryptic and needlessly complicated. There are several bugs; mainly just annoyances. The map sections could use some QA as it is possible to transition from one area to another at a top edge and appear in a wall on the next are. If you "mine" a crystal while a characters dialog is active, it is possible for the UI to get confused, not be able to pick a crystal, and your only option is to press the back/esc button. This is bound to the "I don't want a crystal, just give me 50 arc" option.
