I played the original and the director's edition before, so I was a bit hesitant whether to buy this edition. I 'm glad that I did. It's the same game as the original edition. Same story and same gameplay. That hasn't changed. But I like the improvements, the images are so much sharper than before. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played an adventure game before.
...The last months of the year and the end of the millennium. So many great memories.
OK, let's cut to the chase. Everything had been said about the game since its release in 1996, so I'll just say it's a great classic P&C game every adventure game fan should know and focus on the remake aspect. The new graphics looks great, letting us see the game just like we remembered it from these 30 years ago. There are some small changes, but these are usually minimal and don't change overall impressions. There's however a place where changes are very much visible: In the Scotland at the end ot the game. The original shows very cloudy scenery, like it could start raining any moment. The reforged shows the same scene illuminated by the warm rays of the setting sum which changes look of the place a bit much for me. It's nice that we can change if we want to see original graphics or remastered in the menu, or using TAB button. There's also help system with multistage hints and option to choose how soon we can ask for another clue. It probably won't be needed by Broken Sword veterans but It's good it's there.
The negatives? Remaking of all these animations was supported by the AI: start and end frames were created manually, but these in-between were generated and then cleaned and corrected by real artists. As much as I dislike AI use, I understand that it could be too expensive and time consuming to do everything manually. so as long as it came out OK, I can overlook AI use. Another point of contest is the game's price. Sure, it's a very nice game and is refreshed very well, but the base price is a bit high for basicallly third time the same game (original, DC and Reforged). I'd say, wait for a modest sale, especially if you have original version.
The team have managed to capture the original in atmosphere and gameplay perfectly while going over every part of the art in tremendous detail.
The new QoL features and UI really works well and doesn't take anything away from the original at all. If you are new to the point and click genre, this is a perfect place to start with options to help you on your journey, while older fans get to enjoy this classic in a whole new way.
This is probably the best way to experience o re-experience this game, very far from being a quick AI hack, as some uninformed people have been writing. The game itself will be soon 30 years old, so I think it's useless to complain about the pacing or else.
I am baffled by the 1 star reviews, which are mostly not talking about the quality of the game, just complaining about having to pay for it. I could understand the upset if this was just a money grab, but this is so far from being just another quick 'refresh' knockout to make money. It is very evident just how much passion the team had for this remaster project, and their desire to do it justice, and they have absolutely smashed it.
To refute some of the silliar assertions I have included some quotes directly from the kickstarter brief. 'Backgrounds are being repainted in 4K from the original line art.',
'Character sprites are being redrawn, with a particular focus on character expression.',
'Dynamic shadows and lighting enrich the beautiful 2D graphics.',
'A combination of pixel art and drawn cells that are now being lovingly redrawn.'.
What can I say, but wow, it is absolutely incredible. The artwork is fantastic, and being able to tab to jump back in to the original graphics really demonstrates just how much loving effort the team have put into this remaster. The hifedilty originally recorded score have been used throughout, so none of the 11 kHz compression loss, so that also sounds great too. There are a few areas of dissonance with regards to the character voicing (obvious sound booth, some a bit emotionally dry) but given that it would be impossible to re-record these without losing a lot of it's originality, I'm okay with it.
Gameplay remains what it was, incredible, and thankfully, enough time has elapsed that I can't remember all of the puzzles (got completely stuck with the goat for way too long) so to a large extent it feels like playing it from scratch.
I wholeheartedly recommend anyone to give it a whirl.
