Ayumi, the gorgeous gun and sword-wielding treasure hunter, sets out on a journey to an ancient island in search of new adventures. While rich in bounty, the island is also filled with the magic of Chaos, being at the same time home to blood thirsty monsters. With a host of colorful characters, eye-popping visual appeal, tons of treasure and a huge variety of combat skills to master, Blades of Time will bring just as much fun and satisfaction both to gamers that are new to the action adventure genre and to experienced players.
Key features:
Time Rewind. The ability to rewind time will help Ayumi to solve different puzzles and fight with armies of monsters.
Meetings and encounters. While traveling Ayumi is sure to meet lots of cuddly, funny and mysterious characters. Each of them will make a contribution to the story of the blonde's risky adventures.
Beautiful in-game world. The world of the game is packed with a variety of fantastic landscapes. Here players can find everything: from snowy valleys to dense jungle, ancient cities and temples and even sky islands.
Martial arts. Over 40 different combo attacks as well as spells of different magic schools will help Ayumi to defeat all the enemies that stand in her way.
Precious time. Ayumi’s ability to speed herself up in no time will help her to catch up with enemies, flee from her pursuers and travel all over the in-game world, making use of its unique landscape features.
BLADES OF TIME is the best spectacle fighter Platinum never made. Why aren't you playing this game?
[+] Fantastic fluid combat. Your attack moves are distilled to the essentials you need to manage the aggressive mobs the game throws at you. That game requires some strategy to survive some of the enemy groups. Vertical attacks will launch an enemy and get you out of crowds. Dash targeting will allow you to quickly get around the arenas, eliminate distant dangerous enemies, and whittle down large groups. No Quick Time Events needed.
[+] Exceptionally well-paced for the first 3 or so hours. The game does a very good job of ramping up the difficulty early on, as it explains the most important mechanics through combat challenges and brief tutorials. These first 3 hours are some of the most thrilling melee combat I've played this decade.
[+] Unlimited lives with generous waypoints. Deaths are common, but you rarely lose more than a few minutes of progress when you die.
[+] Very good music full of rousing orchestral tunes.
[+] Art direction is quite good.
[-] No Easy Mode. The action is so demanding, that most gamers may not defeat the first game's first boss.
[-] Some of the enemies and puzzles may have unclear solutions.
[-] The game is extremely linear.
[-] The spells you learn seem to be interchangeable, in terms of effectiveness. They largely function as bonus skills to be used in specific combat situations, but aren't required.
[-] Guns may be too overpowered, in some situations.
[-] The very good music is mostly an indistinguishable suite of rousing orchestral tunes.
[-] The story and dialogue are dumb. And not "fun" dumb, as Platinum stories sometimes are. The English voice acting is tolerable.
[-] Heroine's character design may be a distraction.
[-] The DLC (Dismal Swamp) is a terrible 90-minute campaign centered around a character with fewer moves, interminable wave-based mission design, and a plethora of bad "quicksand" bits.
The game was surprisingly fun. Combat was fluid albeit a bit clunky until you get used to it (like all games of its era). It was on the short side, and quite easy but fun. The most challenging part was some bizzare design choices.
1: Whoever thought having no I-frames on your dodge while against hitscan ranged enemies needs to be fired. I died more times in a that tiny section than the entire rest of the game because i would get spammed with bullets and had no block/iframes to do anything about that. Added bonus some floor AOE traps that would blow up and it was enraging.
2: The fire particle effects while pretty af for its time made you literally not being able to see ANYTHING that was happening infront of you.
3: There was a whole stage/area that could be removed from the game and wouldnt matter in the slightest. It was put there to pad the game time and it shows...
Thats all the negatives I have to say about it. Otherwise a fun hack n' slash, flashy and pretty effects, a surprisingly good story that had me wondering whose side am I really on and surprisingly fun boss fights. If you like high apm beatem ups from that era grab it on sale and you will not be disappointed
