Blades of Time - Dismal Swamp DLC
Description
Ayumi, the gorgeous gun and sword-wielding treasure hunter, sets out on a journey to an ancient island in search of new adventures. While rich in bounty, the island is also filled with the magic of Chaos, being at the same time home to blood thirsty monsters. With a host of colorful characters, eye-popping visual appeal, tons of treasure and a huge variety of combat skills to master, Blades of Time will bring just as much fun and satisfaction both to gamers that are new to the action adventure genre and to experienced players.
I loved this game since it was released and now here it is DRM free on GOG. Some consider this the spiritual successor to some game named x-blade. I wouldn't know never played it.
I do know however this game has stunning visuals and a good blend of time fighting and puzzle solving. I was never bored when playing this.
Blades of Time is a TPS hack and slash game as simple as a game of this type can be. Definitelly not for everyone, I recommend only for those who enjoy carefree playing.
Being a spiritual successor to OniBlade (better known by the title X-Blades) it is all about going where the game let you while exploring the areas for some hidden things as far as it allow you to go. No important things can be missed and no additional super secret items can be found. Fighting is this simple as well. You can fluidly slash through group of enemies without running out of combo though enemies tend to have defense against hitstun so you have to dodge a lot as it can be expected. There is a handful selection of spells and are a great help but you have to fight to fill up the gauge the spells are using. Enemies are varied in toughness and attack, some require specific approach to kill.
There is also time rewind much like in Prince of Persia's 3D games and most of the puzzles revolve around this. Not much puzzles are present in the game anyway, so solving them isn't repetative.
Okay, this not really sound like a five star game I accept, there are free games with more variety put in. The reason I still give it that five star is how perfectly it fill the hole between easy and hard, long metroidvania and short straightforward. For me there is a category that can be named "modern one-nighters". Games that can be finished under a day but you will do it again and again times to times. I'm sure if someone's into this kind of atmosphere Blades of Time won't be a single time experience. I'm obessed so it isn't one-time for me.
This is a TPS game made for you to let go and slash ennemies with feeling of power. The story is good enough to care about the characters. Really good visuals.
You can found equipment that will help by exploring, the gameplay is really great and let you have fun because of it's simplicity. The time rewind mechanics cool and well used. You also have spell who are awesome to use.
Blackspot : there are some bugs. Like cinematics that don't start but with a rapid reload it's all forgotten. One enemy is particulary not fun (you can't kill him), and the first boss can be quite a challenge because you don't really know what to do. Sometimes you can't see what's happening because of all the effects and lights.
Anyway a good game at the end, THE DLC is nice but not as much as fun as the game. I recommand it you you're looking for a game to let go.
I finally added this lovely game to my collection, after the prequel, X-Blades finally arrived to GOG!
The game itself is a great story-based hack'n slash. With the time rewind skill, you can make a whole army from yourself!
The Limited Edition not only contains the DLC, Artbook, and Soundtrack, but the Sky Islands map for the Outbreak mode and an Exclusive Skyguardian Weapon!
I only miss the Wallpapers from the GOG version at this time.
Recommended!
For $6.00 on sale, yeah, definitely worth it. However, the ending left me feeling as though the devs just wanted to wrap it up or maybe leave an introduction to Blades Of Time 2...probably the latter.
The graphics, for its time, are very decent. The story is also decent and the gameplay is challenging but very acceptable. Other than the chick, Ayumi, talking excessively and pointless, the game is actually fun to play. The "skill tree" is interesting but loot is kind of dismal.
The thing which ruins it for me is the ending. You fight for so long, killing all the ending bosses (very challenging), only to have a few seconds of a cliffhanger for, I reckon, BOT 2. It's like the devs were like "Well, lets end this in a hurry", regardless of whether they wanted to leave an opening for BOT 2.
I may play this game again in the future, but, honestly, I'd have to be pretty bored. As for now, I don't see Blades Of Time having much replay value right now. And the DLC that comes with it, I just quit out of boredom.
So yeah, 3 out of 4 stars for me.
